The Playstation Holy Trinity

We all know the Nintendo Holy Trinity. For those that don't know, its the 3 main franchises that Nintendo is most known for and the reason for their continued success. Those three franchises are Super Mario, Metroid, and Zelda.

I would like to introduce what I feel is the Playstation Holy Trinity. Instead of franchises I'd like to recognise three developers that I feel have consistently given us so many fantastic and iconic games, and have been the backbone of the success of the Playstation from the PSX to the PS3. The three developers who make up the Playstation Holy Trinity are Sucker Punch, Insomniac, and Naughty Dog.

Naughty Dog.
I'm going to start with Naughty Dog because they are my favorite of the three. Naughty Dog started with the Crash Bandicoot trilogy on the PSX giving playstation owners a Mascot and a fantastic 3D platformer for a time when there were none to speak of, even Super Mario 64 was a month away when Crash Bandicoot was released. When the PS2 came around Naughty Dog developed a new IP for a new system, Jak and Daxter. The Jak games are by far some of my favorite action platformers of all time and hold up very well despite their age. Jak and Daxter 1,2 and 3 still have a home on my shelf. Uncharted: Drakes Fortune kicked off Naughty Dogs presence on the PS3 and quickly became a "killer app" for anyone deciding whether they want a PS3 or not.

Insomniac.
Insomniac started on the PSX with the Spyro the Dragon trilogy. Spyro was the playstation game everyone played and everyone has fond memories of, and in some cases was the first 3d platformer they had ever played. The dialog was always funny and the gameplay was always fun. On the PS2 Insomnic developed Ratchet and Clank series. It shared the fun and humour of Spyro, but with a slightly more mature attitude. Continuing with their exponential growth in maturity Insomniac developed Resistance series on the PS3 giving PS3 owners the thrill of "tea-bagging newbs" that was once only available to Halo owners. As well as continuing their Ratchet and Clank series with the R&C Future trilogy.

Sucker Punch.
Sucker Punch is the weakest of the three, only because they didn't get into the playstation until the PS2, but they definitely started strong with the Sly Cooper series, Sly 3 still being the closest thing you'll get to an Ocean's 11 videogame. They recently got in on the PS3 with the highly rated inFamous.

Though Killzone, Metal Gear Solid, and Final Fantasy may be the games everyone talks about. Sucker Punch, Naughty Dog and Insomnic have given us IP's that truly define the Playstation past present and future and for that I consider them my Playstation Holy Trinity.

This is of course just my opinion and feel free to disagree.

I guess I'm not the only one who associates all these developers with one another.  I love them all, however, Insomniac's PS3 offerings are quite a step down from their PS2 and even original PS stuff in my opinion.  Sucker Punch and Naughty Dog have only improved, though.

@dcpc10: Yeah but then it wouldn't be the holy trinity it would be the holy hexagon or something. It just isn't as catchy. Plus, like EvilTwin said, Sucker Punch, Naughty Dog and Insomniac can all be associated with one another which makes them a good fit for a holy trinity.

But I totally agree that there are other great developers out there, I just think that these three don't get quite as much recognition as they deserve and that they are responsible for some of the most iconic game characters on the playstation. Like Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter, Sly etc.

How about Sony Santa Monica Studios? The God of War dudes?

Why do people refer to the PlayStation platform as the PSX? That was a specific form factor, not the entire platform.

Besides, how hard is it to type "PlayStation"? You wrote 4 paragraphs, but adding 9 extra letters takes too much time. Seriously?

Posted by Omega
@Suicrat: When the playstation was in development it's code name was Playstation eXerimental. The abreviation for that is PSX, it sort of caught on when the Playstation was released. People called it the PSX back then, I called it the PSX back then and still do now.

Its a perfectly acceptable abbreviation, why take issue with it? How is it any less acceptable than writing PS2 or PS3? And was it really that important to criticise me for using an abbreviation instead of writing "playstation" or "original playstation?" I'm sure you could have found tonnes of other things to bitch about. Grammar, punctuation, sentence structure especially. You could have even questioned the validity of my statement like everyone else. But no you went for the smallest pettiest gripe imaginable, you really think outside the box Suicrat.

Good for you.

I think those three developers definitely have shaped sony platforms a great deal, but Kojima Productions and Squarsoft have definitely had a bigger impact on system sales than those guys.

@Omega: And it was a meaningful enough comment for you to respond with two paragraphs.

I feel special.

By the way, when you're referring to someone after a statement to that person, you need to put a comma. So the correct way to finish the penultimate sentence would be "you really think outside the box, Suicrat."

P.S.: It's called a 'pet peeve', Omega.

Seems well thought out and I can't really fault your points. I am not convinced they are the be all and end of of Sony's success though.

@Suicrat: You still haven't explained why you don't like it to be referred to as the PSX. I've become very curious.

And thanks for the tip, commas can be tricky sometimes.

@Omega: I think he meant to say in his last post that is was just a pet peeve that people refered to the Playstation console as PSX.

I just question the need to abbreviate in the midst of a (relatively) large amount of text.

Sucker Punch
Naughty Dog
Insomniac
Sony Santa Monica Studios

Plus, Kojima Studios, Ubisoft Montreal and Square Enix do their fair share =)

How dare you put Sucker Punch's name out there with the greats?!!

Just kidding, but I think that Sucker Punch has a lot of proving to do before you can look at those three as a trinity, instead of just the duo of Insomniac and ND. I don't think that there is any other studio with the amount of flexibility and ability to put out console-defining games with such speed and consistency. IMHO as far as Sony exclusive developers go, those two are untouchable.

I'm sorry but as far as Nintendo goes Pokemon is solidly thier #2 franchise next to Mario in both sales and fame.

Huh? What is Ubisoft Montreal doing on there? They only release multi-platform or Xbox exclusive stuff. They have never done something exclusively for Sony.

ive always thought the 3 best  developers were sucker punch, insonmiac, and naughty dog... im glad to see other people thinking that as well........

Posted by get2sammyb

I'd say it's more: Santa Monica, Naughty Dog, Studio Japan actually... Of course Insomniac come very close, and all of the British/European Sony studios are massive for Sony.

Sony Playstation has always been about diversity and they achieve that with this massive wealth of talent they control. I don't think you can really single out a "holy trinity" because so many of the studios are important.

Studio London have been a massive studio for Sony's casual market for example.

@get2sammyb:  To be honest, I think Insomniac are prob the best out of all the Sony exclusive developers. They created the Resistance series, Ratchet and Clank, and Spyro.

Naughty Dog come close though, simply because of Uncharted, Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter.

Team Ico seems to be missing.

liquid REALLY loves his prince of persia so thats why theres ubisoft  montreal

@shadows_kill:   That and that they are a multiplatform company that use the PS3 as lead for a lot of their games and even if they don't they do good porting jobs.
Posted by FunExplosions

What about Midway and Acclaim?  The Playstation 2 would have never taken off if it wasn't for games like Narc and BMX XXX.

Posted by Bucketdeth

I think I'd put it this way.

1. Naughty Dog
2. Guerrilla
3. Insomniac

Edited by FCKSNAP

I think the Holy Trinity for Sony should be Santa Monica, Japan Studio and whatever the former Psygnosis guys are calling themselves (SCEE Studios?). My reasoning behind this is because they make games, create tech, contribute to firmware and share devs/PR with anyone trying to make a PS3 "exclusive" game.

Also, SOE has become more involved lately since Kaz took them away from Sony Pictures (WTF was that about anyway?)

Posted by thecleric

This generation for Sony is the generation of Sucker Punch, Insomniac, and Naughty Dog. While those 3 have had moderate success in the past generations, I think this is the one that puts them up there with the big dogs, and gets Sony a bunch of games that people didn't even know exist, and now they want to try them. So it works out great for both.

Also there's potential for Media Molecule and UnitedFront as well.

Posted by solidejake

I agree, for the most part. But MGS was on all three systems, selling fairly well. This is just what we call the "platforming trio."

Posted by Zero_
@thecleric: Insomniac and Naughty Dog were huge successes in the past generations with Spyro, Ratchet, Crash and Jak. To call them relatively unkown prior to their PS3 releases is understating their portfolio.

Looks like the Playstation holy trinity is Southern California!

yup, all three great devs.
