Franchise Torpedo!

We've all seen it at one time or another. That entry in a franchise that completely kills any interest you'd have in a sequel. These games are more than a misstep. You wonder if they were intentionally trying to sabotage the franchise or ran out of money or what, but the reason for the existence of the game in the state it was released in is a complete mystery.

List items

  • How do you fuck up Crackdown 2? Remake Crackdown 1, but take out all of the personality and attempts at a narrative. Give the same repetitive mission objectives over and over and over again, and give everyone a bad case of deja vu.

  • Larry had a good run, and the reboot featuring his nephew, Larry Lovage, honestly wasn't bad at all. This horrendous follow-up just hurts to look at, though, with the worst use of Unreal tech this side of a Denis Dyack lawsuit. It wasn't just the looks, either, the script was abysmal. I'm no prude, but liberal use of expletives aren't a punchline in and of themselves. After enough of it, it just comes across as ugly and vulgar. (Actually, that's a pretty fair summary for this entire game.)

  • The follow-up to the successful FFXI was so bad they had to pull the plug on a released MMO and re-release it. Even F2P conversions of MMOs don't do that, so that should be telling.

  • It almost feels like they ran out of money and time, and this was a fully functional game with cutscenes just penciled in.

  • Kinda feel bad about adding this one, but for a game that was so focused on the story, the nonsense right at the end made me uninterested in any sequels. This coming from a guy who read all of the books and got every single collector's edition.

  • So... yeah. I could really go for a steak sandwich right about now.
