Genesis. Are they a good band? I hear they were, a long time ago.

Until Phil Collin took over, of course.

You know, I saw a bit of a performance video from them in their heyday, Bruce was all dressed up in some extravagant costume, as if he jumped out of some sort of expressionist play from the 1920's or something. He wasn't so much singing as doing a spoken word performance, in which he assumed the character of..."Europa" was it? It seemed kind of neat actually, more interesting than I could have expected from people saying they were alright, once. But that thing about me, where for some reason I can't seem to find it in me to become interested in a particular subject, until it has entered my life in a specific way, really kinda prevented me from perusing Genesis any further. One day I might, but it's been years since then, and frankly I'm not in the least confident that that day will eventually come.

Furthermore, again, although I haven't delved at all into Bruce Springsteen's solo era catalog, it certainly hasn't presented itself to me in the most appealing way possible, so, really, is there any reason for me to check out early Genesis?

I'll answer my own question for me: Yes, they could be fun, but no, unfortunately very few things in life are so important that they are of any consequence to one's development, so whatever benefit you may gleam from digging into the legacy of Genesis, you could probably equal by delving into something else, something that already has an apparent greater appeal to you.

Alright, I think this is enough for one day's blogging, especially considering I'm just doing this to see if I get the "Genesis" achievement on this little site here. Maybe one day I'll return to this blog, but until then,

Adios!

Original Genesis with Peter Gabriel is sick. Really progressive and just filled with genius moments.

@ xyzygy: Slightly ignorant me, I totally mixed up that Bruce Springsteen was in Genesis, instead of Peter Gabriel.

Oh and apparently I had to refresh the page to get the achievement--Yes, this is how you get Genesis.

The department lead I work with is a huge Genesis fan and goes on and on and on about how progressive they are and how great they were before Phil Collins replaced Gabriel and then they became all radio friendly and mainstream.

When he's not listening to progressive Genesis what does he listen to? The city's shitty top 40 classic rock station who's top three songs in heavy rotation are "Bohemian Rhapsody," "You're Just What I Needed," and "Carry On My Wayward Son." God, Milwaukee has the SHITTIEST radio stations.

About Genesis: it is complex music; if you are used to rap or the like, you won't understand a thing of Genesis. It's a different kind of music. They used what is called "harmonic progressions," which is a series of chords; say one of their songs starts in D (many of them), then you go to F, G, A, may be to E or E#, and back to D. Like in classical music, they use themes; the "Happy birthday," for instance, is a theme. They repeat the theme, then there is a chorus, repeat the theme in a minor scale, then in a major scale, and so on. I recommend "Duke," an impressive album. They were amazing musicians; Phil Collins is one of the best drummers ever; Tony Banks, keyboard player, penned very romantic songs; Mike Rutherford, bass and guitar, is an amazing arranger. Listen to the ensemble playing, superb, their arrangements, and their imaginative lyrics. Collins, a loser in love in real life, sings with his heart "Alone tonight." But you need to get used to their music; listen patiently to their songs, remember that it is British music; there is a connection all the way back from Keane to Duran Duran, to The Police, Genesis, and The Beatles. If you are acquainted with any of the above, then Genesis will be far easier to understand. Once you get to like them, you'll like Genesis for a lifetime. Listen to "Evidence of Autumn," a moving song about someone's perfect girlfriend; but then she drops him; Collins sings it movingly. "Misunderstanding" is another beautiful song about a loser in love; it's penned in 6/8, this is a rapid waltz.
