Beware: Spoiler content ahead

Infinity or Treyarch, modern or historical War, we faced the two warlike faces of Call of Duty. This is the war!

With Call of Duty: World at War in the stores the fans has a doubt: Which of both last titles of the saga is better? Call of Duty 4 and 5 are two very different products in all the aspects, but also two faced developers that hoard two radically opposite ways to see the war.

In 2003 of Call of Duty saga born like an answer to the slight signs is born from atrophy that began to show Medal of Honor. A franchise of Electronic Arts, created by Steven Spielberg, had begun with robust foot in 1999 with his first delivery, and sent in 2002 the impressive Allied Assault one of its better incursions. Despite the irregular successive episodes of Rising Sun, Spear Head and Pacific Assault they did not make augur of nothing good for the mark.

The fan to the recent fashion of shooters warlike demanded a quality product, and found in the stores the best proposal: Call of Duty.

With this first game Infinity Ward point to the altars of the great developers of newcomer FPS, and Activision found the game exemption that needed to prevail in the slopes critical and commercial, in a time very important for the North American company.

Call of Duty: World at War, Artillery Assault
Call of Duty: World at War, Artillery Assault

The case of Infinity Ward and Treyarch is one of most singular of the industry of videogames at the moment. Activision announced throughout this year its intention to alternate both development teams, so that both overlapped their productions having two years to each project, and putting at the disposal of the fan in the stores one every year.

The result? That Treyarch when finishing Call of Duty 3 began to work on the episode fifth sent recently. And that Infinity Ward when finishing Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare the last year, began the production of the sixth part that we will see the next year.

The subject comes from length, logically. Infinity Ward create at the time Call of Duty to give his own vision on shooters warlike of World War II, and when it considered that this formula was exhausted, they  jump to the modern conflicts with the essential Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

This change of context was realized contradicting desires of millions of fans who associated abbreviations COD with World War II directly. The dangerous change, nevertheless, rebelled everything a success and with this game filled a little hole treated traditionally, the contemporary combat. The public ended up giving the reason and applauded the change.

Nevertheless we suppose that the decision of Treyarch and Activision would not seat well between the rows of the Californian studio to give back the saga to World War II with the following episode, since the effort of Infinity Ward at the time of changing the basic curtain had been remarkable.

Despite far from falling in the mediocrity Call of Duty 5: World at War has turned out to be more than worthy title of the saga, and with total certainty best game of Treyarch to date. It is very far still of the four works of the creators of the saga - Call of Duty, Call of Duty: United Offensive, Call of Duty 2 and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare-, but it is very over of Call of Duty 3 and Call of Duty: Big Red One that the new developer had realized until then.

The reasons for this jump in terms of quality? Essentially the intensity has been increased, one of the skinny points of its previous works, and to top it all, a spectacular cooperative mode has been gotten up, flowing towards which the industry of videogames seems to be orient itself at present.

The duration was indeed the unique skinny point, aside all, from the irreproachable fourth delivery. With a longer campaign and the re-playable factor that contributes the possibility to surpass it with three friends, Treyarch resolves this problem amply.

Lamentably it lacks of spark, and this is doubtless. Modern Warfare left to the past year ineffaceable moments in the retina of the spectator like the level of the sniper in Ukraine, or the moving nuclear blast that devastates the city before our incredulous eyes. World at War is still a product more than remarkable, but it lacks the push to turn it into a superb game. The plagiarism of Enemy to the doors is intense although fleeting, and the Russian slope of this fifth delivery has more charisma than the routine part of the jungle in the Pacific that was its greater commercial reclamation. Despite this, Call of Duty WaW suffers from the lack of inspiration that was insufflates by Infinity Ward to characters and situations in CoD: Modern Warfare.

Therefore, in the cooperative mode, it overcomes World AT War, in the intensity of the campaign, Modern Warfare but, what about the competitive multiplayer mode? Here the forces are equaled, but the fourth delivery continues demonstrating its clear supremacy.

Both games implement identical system of experience and rewards, introduced by Infinity Ward in the title from 2007, and that offers to the players the opportunity to personalize its experience in combat. Treyarch returns to insist on the presence of vehicles, element that already offered in Call of Duty 3 and that the fourth episode ignored, although as then its participation does not finish fitting too much well. On the other hand the maps from multiplayer mode from Call of Duty WaW are noticeably bigger than Call of Duty 4, which connects with the mentioned presence of jeeps, tanks, and etcetera.

However, and considering all this, only the time will say if the multiplayer life of the competitive mode from World at War extends of the same form that the previous episode, totally inexhaustible evens a year after its releasing.

Call of Duty 5, nevertheless, introduces another element in its multiplayer mode, an irreverent totally out of place modality that mixes Nazi zombies with cooperative survival. Nazi Zombies unlocks when we finish the individual campaign for the first time, and locks up four human players in a house that is assaulted by the ultra tomb Germans. This modality of game is certainly funny and provides unique moments in the game along with other three friends, but it is possible to ask itself again if the solemn Infinity Ward will not been knocking their heads against the wall before the upsettings that from Treyarch are becoming to the realistic ****of the saga with additions like this.

In Activision, conscious of the potential of the graphical motor that they had in hand, they have decided that good part of the line of action titles that it has predicted for this year, uses the same that the one of Call of Duty 4. Engine of own creation especially developed by Infinity Ward for its last participation in the warlike series.

World at War, however, does not arrive at the quality levels of Modern Warfare. In the first place, because Treyarch does not seem prepared as Infinity Ward to handle this engine power, since they have been the ones that created it after all. And secondly, because the cut of the new delivery of Call of Duty is very different.

Mappings with deep detail in the vegetation have been used like in the Pacific Ocean part, and this ends up repelling in the graphical level that the rest of factors exhibit. The Russian front in Germany enjoys a better work to his backs, and seems to conform itself with greater comfort to the technological tool with which it has been developed. Nevertheless, and in spite of being a phenomenal graphical, Call of Duty: World at War has needed an extra to equal its predecessor in textures, illumination, modeled and animations of the characters.

A year has passed from the launching of Call of Duty 4, and seems that the graphical magic that it harnessed one of the best games in the line of vision of the last years follows for the boys of Infinity Ward intact.

What to wait from of the Call of Duty franchise in coming years? The unstoppable rate of an annual delivery imposed by Activision can derive in two very clear exits for the series. In the first place the quality can undergo a reduction by the unstoppable necessity to have a game ready every twelve months. Despite the fact that both studios distribute the work in terms of two years it seems to augur that the levels of effectiveness and prestige can stay with seriousness year after year, which would suppose the other exit for the Call of Duty mark.

The next year, 2009, it is the turn of Infinity Ward to the job, and at the moment nothing is known about where the project could be oriented. The speculation surroundings to emphasis if in the modern war is made again, or if it becomes the view towards new fronts of wars from the past.

Until then this franchise seems to enjoy a robust health of a totally unquestionable character. We only hoped that the ferocious commercial model on the part of Activision that forces to release a game every year does not end up leaving exhausted to which it is, at the moment, The best war action game franchise in the history.

RE5 on PC?!
RE5 on PC?!

Resident Evil 5 has been dated for the PC, though the bad news is that it won't be out this year according to MCV UK who also revealed the UK release date for Street Fighter IV.

Capcom looks set to have a busy first quarter in fact, with Bionic Commando, MotoGP Wii, Dead Rising Wii, Street Fighter IV and Resident Evil 5 launching all in the first few months.

Resident Evil 5 will, according to the release, be launching on Xbox 360, PC and PlayStation 3 on March 13th next year. Street Fighter IV meanwhile will get launched on the same platforms, PC included, on February 20th.

Resident Evil 5 has proven a controversial title for Capcom so far. Not only does the game shift the action from gothic corridors and creepy villages to sunny Africa but it has also been accused of racism and portraying Africa in a negative, poverty-wracked light. Capcom however has refuted these claims.

So, while the bad news is that the game won't be out until March next year, Capcom is at least keeping it's promises and staying close to the PC platform by releasing the game on PC and console formats at the same time.
