@Warrozo: I suppose you can add minigames or such with the story, or basically turn it into an RPG since you said you needed a simple project for a day. Not sure how you define gameplay in your terms if you've ever played a visual novel before.

@Warrozo: A game/interactive novel with a simple, short, branching story. Basically looking like the dialog system of western RPGs with drawings instead of talking heads. Doesn't have to be Zork in complexity. Make it read from text files or a standard folder structure so you can plug-in stories on the fly. Something like a simple version of Ren'Py.

Thanks for the suggestions, working through them right now. How would I test if I have a bad PSU?
You can monitor the stability of the voltage rails if they're close to the intended output. My old PC would randomly hang and lock up minutes after I booted into Windows especially when starting a game, so booted up into the BIOS and saw that the 12V rail was delivering not enough voltage. Basically replaced the PSU and the hanging issues were gone after that.

@PenguinDust: I'm thinking Irrational, or CDPR can tackle the challenge. I know it's just me, but something about the new "streamlined" Bioware rubs me the wrong way, and I loved how complex BG2 is. DA2 and ME2 basically have you doing unrealistic binary decisions that will all eventually lead to the same outcome sans some minor tweaks. The "romances" will be basically washed-out PG13 stuff sanitized for TV. A spy genre RPG needs that gray/gray "nothing's wrong or right" system that The Witcher 2 has in spades given that you basically can't trust anyone in the profession. Personally I like the "Bourne" style of gritty all-alone feeling than a glamorous Bond spouting one-liners and getting the sexy chick as a more fitting pretense for a spy RPG.

One neat thing I liked in Alpha Protocol were the constant stream of mini-perks you get, basically in-game achievements for doing stuff (-5s cooldown for intimidating 5 people, etc.). That game truly is a what-could-have-been. This genre is perfect for the taking for a great shooter-RPG.

New video from CDPR showing the dynamic lifestyle of NPCs: sleeping, eating, walking around, talking with others, generally anything but standing around 24/7.

This is feeling like you can really lose yourself in the world in TW2. That sense of immersion computer RPGs strive to fully have. They even animated the NPCs tossing and turning in their beds.

Great writeup. I think what you're getting at is some sort of what the social aspects of MMOs are catering to since the places are very much alive. Granted it's not set in real-life world locations, but the patterns can be carried over to a game like that. Are you thinking of something like a third-person open-world version of The Sims maybe? People put in their stuff, others can download it and experience these creations for themselves.

Still have a 14" CRT here. Keeping the Sega Genesis working when I'm bored of the "next-gen" stuff to play out some gool ol' Road Rash. Sometimes a friend will bring in their NES that still works to this day. These things are just rugged.

People with mindsets that gaming development moves in discrete chunks and thinks the developers are a homogenous set of an all-in-one artist/coder/designer/producer who all work on one exclusive thing at a time (leading to arguments treating story/graphics as mutually exclusive or rants about the developer working on stuff before "finishing" the current game). Then painting publishers as solely existing to screw over developers.

People who reply with "who cares" on things they disagree with and subsequently can't hold up a decent, calm, and informed discussion about a topic. Which then violates their very premise by replying to a thread which signifies a hint of interest on a topic, even if negative.

Hmm, most gaming sites have a choice of black or white. In the meantime, get Stylish and cook up some CSS. I use this to turn all WM sites into pretty Verdana with gdipp

Is the monitor connected by a VGA, DVI or HDMI cable? You need either DVI or HDMI to be able to use digital scaling.

You should see the settings in CCC under My Digital Flat Panels > Properties > Image Scaling
