2012 Game of the Year

These are my top ten games that I played in 2012. YAY VIDEO GAMES!

List items

  • No game this year quite engulfed me into the story like The Walking Dead. At the end of every episode I was an emotional wreck and despite saving up a few episodes to play through them, I couldn't play more than one a day in few of going into a complete mental breakdown. Telltale crafted an amazing narrative, and I can't wait for Season 2.

  • From the moment you boot up to the main menu, you know you're in for something crazy. Hotline Miami is a homicidal acid trip with fast and fun gameplay, retro visuals, and easily the best soundtrack of the year. I still don't understand what the story was about, but I know I will keep playing this one for a while.

  • New Super Mario Bros. U takes what made the Wii version great and built on it with more power-ups and the ability to have a fifth player intentionally screw everyone up, causing even more madness. Oh, and it's in HD!

  • Of course Rock Band Blitz is on my list! As someone who has already invested in over 1,000 songs on the platform, Blitz adds extra value to my catalog and allows me to play through the songs in a new way. Oh, and SCORE WARS!

  • Trials Evolution is an evil, evil game. But for some reason, I can't seem to put it down. There's few things in gaming this year quite as satisfying as finally getting that gold medal you kept trying to get for hours. Screw platinum medals, those'll be the death of me.

  • I haven't played a blockbuster FPS since Halo 3. But when Halo 4 was announced and the gameplay was shown at E3, I knew I was ready to get back into the fight. And I'm glad I did. Multiplayer has really evolved over the years, and it was all fresh and new to me. I'll never be one of those top-ranking guys, but I'm still having fun stumbling around.

  • Another Harmonix game? Shocking, I know! I'm far from amazing at Dance Central, but the series is still the best thing on Kinect. The soundtrack to the game is excellent, and the whole story about fighting dance crimes through time is silly in just the right way. The party mode might actually get some of my friends to jump in and join in the fun.

  • I took a bit of a break from the LEGO games, so I wasn't burned out on the formula going into this one. I'm a huge Batman fan, so I was totally in for some more Batman. The "open world" was fun to explore and experiment with the environment with different heroes. But one of my favorite gaming moments of the year is in this game: whenever you fly around as Superman the John Williams Superman theme kicks in, and you can't help but feel like a badass.

  • Fez, you are one huge conundrum. I don't think I've even scratched the surface of all the secrets this game holds, and I'm afraid I'll slip deeper into insanity if I start to obsess over it.

  • This is a late entry into my list. This game is bananas and a lot more than you think it is. If you haven't played it yet, why not? This is how you do Flash gaming right.
