Tired of the Negative Xbox One Press, Getting the Xbox One Regardless

I don't know why but I am going with the Xbox One as my first next gen console purchase. With all the negative Xbox One press and positive PS4 press, you might think the PS4 would be the obvious, gamer choice. But I actually do have some reasons why I am sticking with Xbox as my primary game system.

  • The Xbox One controller looks to be the absolutely best controller for gaming EVER! Seriously, its a refined version of the best controller for the current gen. Even most PlayStation fans will admit that the Xbox 360 controller is one of the best console controllers of all time. The controller is the thing that makes a game system. Its your interface to all games, all the time. Its like the speakers for an audio system. No audio system is great without great speakers because they are the interface to the sound. I feel the same way about the controller.
  • The Xbox 360 had the best online experience. Why forget that? So, they are likely to have the best online tools, voice, chat, etc for the next gen. People seem to be very willing to skim over this fact but it certainly more likely that Xbox will improve on all aspects of online network play and chat.
  • The performance difference will not make much difference. Like it or not, 3rd party developers will simply not spend much time optimizing for the higher performance system (which looks to be PS4) so nearly all games, other than exclusives, will play nearly identical on PS4 and Xbox One. Of course I would have preferred to have Microsoft raise the bar a bit higher to match or exceed the PS4 specs but the reality is that 3rd parties will work to ensure the games perform the same on the least common denominator. As far as 1st party games, I can wait and see. But when great PS4 exclusive are released, I can reconsider a PS4 purchase.

Mostly its that I want that Xbox One controller. I am lucky enough to be able to get a PS4 later, if it turns out the Xbox One messed up the design/performance on the Xbox One. I also feel that all this PS4 hype is simply not as deserved as the current press would imply. But if the PS4 turns out to be seriously superior, I have no problem changing consoles. I have no "brand loyalty" and I think both systems will turn out pretty good. Since they may be the only consoles for the next 10 years, I just want to be sure I get one on release day.

Also, I don't plan on buying any Blu Ray discs. I am going 100% digital. So, it bummed me out how the Xbox One had to trash some of their plans but whatever... I know digital distribution is just a matter of time. I will be holding on tight to my 360 game collection as it is likely to be my last!

P.S. I hate the Kinect! I wish I did not have to pay for it etc. This almost made me switch to PS4. The Kinect has potential but its just not been realized and may never reach it. I still highly doubt it will be anything more than a paper weight after the initial launch.

P.P.S. I immediately regret my decision :)

Thanks for sharing the reasons why you dont know why you're getting an xbox one, i think... I'm getting one too because of video games. Cheers!

@gristlemcthornbody: Yeah, I am as confused as anyone. And like you I am getting one "because video games".

I dunno, if your main reason is the controller, people who've tried both said that they're both about equal. If the PS4's controller caught up then your main reason for spending $100 dollars on a console is kind of null and void then right?

I mean, your decision is your decision I just don't think the logic is really sound.

Edited by padrino

@dystopiax: Its sound to me. I have had both systems for a long time and I still prefer the Xbox layout, buttons, triggers etc. I just prefer it. The PS4 may be improved to a major degree but that does not change the layout or the "feel" of the controllers. I prefer the Xbox style of controller. Its as simple as that. I suppose I could change my mind if I had hands-on with the PS4 controller but I won't. And I strongly believe the touch pad is a waist of controller space. I dislike that as much as the Kinect :) but I can just ignore the Kinnect. I would have to have that touch pad staring my in the face all the time. That all being said, I agree that my logic is flawed (did you notice the title and my last statement)

I'm getting it because its got games I want to play, mainly Forza, Deadrising and eventually Titanfall and Halo. If eventually third party games perform way better on the PS4 every time I might switch to that, but as for exclusives....Uncharted, Infamous, Killzone, R&C....none of those do anything for me which is a huge bummer because the variety of their exclusives is much greater, it just doesn't appeal to me :(

Can't wait for that RYSE, braw. Those are some sick QTEs! The best part is that if you fail they will automagically complete anyway! It's like the game is playing itself!

Paying 100 bucks more for less seems completely idiotic, unless you prefer Halo or something. Regarding the developers developing for the system with the least power; that all depends on the install base and from looking at those pre-order numbers and the amount of misinformation after MS' flip-flopping, it ain't looking good....

Expand your "waist" with some Doritos

Posted by padrino

@vinny_says I agree, those are also good, logical reasons. Not as cool or nonsensical as mine but good.

Your comma's in the wrong place.

I was excited to read about how the press is sick of all of their negative news about the XOne, so they're all getting it out of spite. I was disappoint.

Soooo, end of thread. then?

Edited by padrino

@nekroskop I am glad to see you "get it"... wait a minute. You seem to be a bit sarcastic ;)

And having equal performance has little to do with install base. Its about marketing, money and time.

@padrino: To be honest I think buying any console at launch is a huge mistake. Just sit by the sideline and watch the fireworks. I didn't buy a PS3 until 2008 and a 360 until 2009. Good things come to those who wait.

I never said that the Xone was equal to the PS4 in power.

Posted by padrino

@nekroskop: True enough. Early adopters will always suffer. But I can't just sit on the sidelines. But, yes, that is the smart move.

I think it should be clear, I am a fan of both systems. I just don't feel its necessary to buy both at launch (but I considered it because I am a freak). I am looking forward to this next gen of gaming. I just figured I would enumerate my thoughts here.

i disagree and i think you work at microsoft OR you just decided to sign up to the internet to be a knight in shining armor for their cause as the number 1 microsoft xbox videogame console system fan.

I think people in the press are getting both cuz they need it for their job, which is to play and review video games and video game systems and render opinions on them

@tarsier: You caught me. I signed up for GB years ago and posted over 30 reviews just to have this opportunity to sway you (and only you) to buy and Xbox One because I make 30 cents on every Xbox one purchase :)

Only 30 cents? That blows dangly bits, man. At least get bumped up to 50 cents.

Edited by TruthTellah

Alright, that seems like a weird reason to spend that much on a console... If you're still kind of uncertain, why not just wait a few months and see how they actually turn out? Maybe give yourself time to try out both. It's just a rather large purchase to be making on an uncertain whim.

If you do get it, I hope you like it, but judging by how you're talking about it, I'd probably recommend waiting a bit until you are more certain on which console you want to go with.

@padrino: " I make 30 cents on every Xbox one purchase" If the Xbone sells as much as the 360 did, you got one hell of a retirement fund, man.

I actually prefer the PS3 controller over the 360. The only thing I dislike on the PS3 controllers was the squishy triggers. I hate the d-pad on the 360 controller as well as the bumpers. The bumpers especially suck ass compared to the L1 R1 buttons on the PS3 controller. I'm planning on PS4 for launch, but will more then likely end up with both eventually.

I've heard plenty of people state that the PS4 controller feels pretty much the same stylistically as the 360 controller.

I even believe there was one dude who said that he couldn't take the XB1 controller for too long cause of the way it was shaped.

I dunno this is also part of the reason why I've never and probably will never buy a console right on launch/preorder, because often there's no point. Why not wait at least a couple days to see and feel the damn thing to see if you like it? And Brad has a point, with a few rare exceptions there's almost never anything that you feel like you absolutely must play day 1.

Posted by Shaunage

I agree on most of that, and I chose it over the PS4 at launch. The Xbone DOES have the better launch lineup.

Posted by Sergio

@padrino: Only real reason needed is that it has exclusives or will have exclusives that you prefer. I'm with you regarding liking the 360 controller more than the DualShock 3; however, having tried both the Xbox One and DualShock 4 controllers, I liked the latter much better.

Posted by Blu3V3nom07

I agree with most all your points. I totally do prefer the XONE controller. I get hand-cramps with the PS3 controller.

And I'm going all-digital as well. I love all the exclusives they have lined up. I myself totally want to lose weight with the Xbox fitness app, for free!

The voice chat seems to be improved with massively improved this time around, coincidentally because of Skype.

I still might actually end up with both consoles near launch. Or more likely build myself out a workstation that just happens to play games sometimes, eith a PS4 a little down the line form there. :)

The xbox one is the first xbox I am not getting and I bought the xbox and xbox 360 at launch. The new one looks horrible in everyway and has nothing I want and more things turn me off to it. it is also the most ulgy console I have ever seen in person and I have seen them all. Every so called feature I don't care or I hate it,. Kinect no fucking way I want to hook that thing up and use it,.

Yes I have played this thing at PAX and other places and I still hate it.

Oh and I used to be a huge Killer instinct fan until microsoft pissed on it and turned it in to total garbage and it looks like a damn xbox 360 game. It is the uglyist fighting game I have ever seen some xbox 360 fighting games even look better. plays like ass and has almost nothing to do with what made killer instinct what it was. just another ass looking japanese capcom clone fighting game now with only 6 fucking characters that you can not even tell are killer instinct characters anyway.

so after like what 10+ years of waiting like they do with most of rarewares stuff so that was my final straw. I could care less about the other fucking so called "only one xbox one" games. ' its the same stuff they had on the xbox 360 i did not care about.

If I wanted to play that damn titan fall game I have a PC with a geforce titan in it that would smoke the fucking xbox one anyway and I can play it on that. Watch dogs don't fucking care I got a PC. I was not going to buy the games on consoles anyway.

Everything else I can get on PS4 or the wii U or the pc./

Bye bye xbox don't think I will miss you this time I am sick of microsoft and the xbox brand im out, it's over when you started sucking I hate the way you do things now, it started with that metrocrap dashboard and kinect on the xbox 360 and snowballed into this extreme amount of suck that I no longer want,.

getting a ps4 if I want to buy one of these consoles this is the first time ever I don't give a flying fuck about console launches. None of these games look good enough to make me care they look like old ass pc games from like 2009.

Posted by JJWeatherman

I'm with you on that controller. I'm very excited to get my hands on one--and to play all of my PC games with it! This is essentially just a controller launch for me.

I totally disagree with your 1st point. Mis-alinged thumbsticks suck, they suck it all. All the way. They suck it up and look at you funny.

Your 2nd point is true, can't even be argued. It only applies to the previous gen though, so...

3rd point is totally biased, "PS4 is more capable, but that doesn't matter." If developers develop for it, then it WILL matter. Especially in the long run of the systems life.

P.S. Anyone buying one console over another for a launch game, well, GL with that.

P.P.S. Ain't a damn thing changed boy, Kinect ya neck!

The PS3 had better technology behind it than the 360, but that didn't seem to equate to much of anything.

The 360 had the best online experience...that you had to pay a subscription for in order to access anything of value, including other subscription services.

@shishkabob: I think we've learned a bit over that last few years though, no?

For me, the decision comes down a handful of factors.

  • The big one is exclusives. Sony just demolished Microsoft in the exclusive department this generation, and I feel confident that trend will continue. Microsoft does have some good franchises, and there was a time I would have chosen the Xbox One for Halo alone, but 343 made that decision for me when the ruined the core of what Halo multiplayer was with Halo 4. The Halo I loved is gone, time to move on. My most anticipated games are Destiny and Infamous Second Son. One is a PS4 exclusive and the other aparentely has more content on Playstation. The only Xbox One exclusive I am really interested in is Quantum Break.
  • Trust. I know Microsoft backpedaled on their anti consumer policies, but Sony never had any to begin with. Do you trust an asshole who apologized and promised never to be an asshole again or the person who was respectful to begin with?
  • Price. Pretty obvious $400 is less than $500.
  • Community. This past gen all my friends started on 360 and moved to PC in the last couple years. For the upcoming gen, all my friends have pretty much decided we are going to be PC/PS4 folks. Luckily, the days of me playing Playstation games online by myself (none of my friends had a PS3) is coming to an end.

So yeah, that's why I am going with the PS4.

No official support at launch. I'll assume someone will find a way to make it work within the first week anyway.

Microsoft: We're making a new Killer Instinct!

Microsoft: We fixed our d-pad!

Microsoft: We're not going to violate your property rights anymore!

This reminds me of something...

But seriously, I was glad to see MS make their 180, and I just might buy an Xbox One sometime down the road. Still going with PS4 first, though, and I never owned a PS3 for this entire generation.

You seem completely aware that your reasoning is a bit odd and buying at launch is a bit mad so yeah, enjoy it. PS4 for me, in a year's time, if things pan out the way I think they will.

Not yet. The Ps4 controller works right now for normal functions only of course. The One controller will most likely get it a bit after launch.

As for the negative press. They are doing it themselves. Just look at the newest one with their kinect adds that even made it to NBC.

As someone who played a lot of action games and rpgs the 360 pad was fine, it was horrible for fighters though and i play a LOT of those. Its easy to say "just buy a joystick/fightpad" but why should we have to? I remember the Saturn and PS1 pads being great for fighters so there is no excuse for what the 360 and PS3 presented us with, that said i did buy fighting pads for both machines but only because i didnt have much of a choice.

I think they might have us covered this time though, i am switching to Playstation after a long time of mainly only playing on 360 (my PS3 only has a small selection of games), i will admit a lot of the BS Microsoft tried to pull on us as well as all the focus on everything except games was a deciding factor in that. They have since shown off some great games but its too late for me now, I will get an Xbox One at some point but its going to be a good few years down the line at this point since the majoirty of games i want at the system launch will also be heading to PC.

Still, never let anyone tell you that your choice is wrong, Microsoft have sorted a lot of their misinformation and aweful policies out, its looking to be a great machine so have fun with it. The PS4's power will likely only be tapped by a few select devs like Naughty Dog and thats fine, if every other game looks like it does on every other platform then those few games will give me a reason to be happy with my purchase.

I want the Kinect 2.0 to fuck off. That's basically why I'm not getting the console. The list used to be much longer for reasons to stay away but they walked back a lot of their Skynet policies.

I really don't like all the ads on the dashboard of the 360 and I doubt they're doing anything different this gen.

Honestly though, the controller looks great and some of the games look compelling. It's just 100% not for me. Which is saying something because I looooove video games.

It's all going to come down to personal taste obviously, but having had the chance to get my hands on both an Xbox One and Playstation 4 controller at PAX this Summer, I can say that assuming the Xbox One's controller will be the "absolutely best controller for gaming EVER" is a little too optimistic on your part. I think all of us can agree that the Xbox 360's controller (with transforming D-pad, mind you) is as close to a perfect controller as we have in this generation. Everything about it from its ergonomics to the resistance on the sticks and triggers to the button layout is terrific.

With all of that said, getting back to the Xbox One's controller, they didn't just take the 360 controller and make it better, they actually kind of screwed it up in a couple of ways that I found immediately distracting. One, the thing feels massive in your hand. It's definitely wider than the 360's controller, and it felt taller too; it feels bulky. Not quite "Duke" bulky, but somewhere in between that and the 360 controller. I couldn't get a sense for the weight because the thing was tethered and I wasn't able to tell if it had batteries in it or not, but the plastic felt hollower to me as well, like it could snap if I put too much pressure on it. And second, the triggers don't feel right. They don't have the same tension as the 360 pad; they feel a little too mushy and they have a little too much throw on them for their size.

That said, the rumble in the triggers really impressed me when playing Forza 5. If you brake too hard and your ABS kicks in, you get a sensation in your triggers (or maybe it was just the left trigger, used for braking, I can't remember) that perfectly mimicked how a brake pedal feels when the ABS takes over in a real car. The D-pad on that thing also feels really good. It's a little too flush with the rest of the controller for my tastes — I really like how high off the controller the 360 transforming D-pad is — but it has a great clickiness to it that gives really good feedback.

These are nitpicks, sure, but both of them contribute to that controller, at first touch, feeling inferior to the 360's. And considering how my general impressions of the PS4's controller were so positive, it's hard for me to think of that Xbox One controller as an improvement. Instead, it seems to me that Microsoft made a couple things better, while also diminishing a couple of things I liked about their previous controller.

@captain_felafel: One thing that concerns me about the new XBox One controller is the new guide button. I'm a little concerned that I'm gonna be accidentally brushing it in the heat of the moment. It happens every once in a while with the current 360 controllers and I'm worried the new sensor style button is going to be a problem.

Couch Mortal Kombat and NBA Jam can get pretty hairy.
