I was hesitant at first that Bayonetta would be sex and style over substance, but the deep combat and general insanity won me over. On top of this I'm not a big fan of character action games in general, so for this game to impress me this much it had to work extra hard. A brilliant game with a fantastic leading lady.
The bugs and crashes drive me crazy, but New Vegas was everything I wanted it to be and more. Excellent missions, genuinely funny moments (both intentionally and unintentionally) and a world I want to explore for hours and hours. What more could I have asked for?
Yea, it's a remake, but it's a remake made with a lot of love and attention to detail. To me the Pokemon series is fairly hit and miss, but Gold and Soul were incredible - and now they've been made even better.
While previous PSP Metal Gear games have been side stories and spin-offs, Peace Walker deserves to be considered Metal Gear Solid 5. The story alone is expertly told (and is better than most in the series) and actual game is a joy to play. Plus managing my own private army, sending the strong ones out on mercenary missions and scanning local WiFi hotspots to find new recruits was a great little meta-game that added to the overall experience. A true classic and one the best games on the PSP.
While not as scary as it could have been Alan Wake was a tense game that had me hooked from start to finish. While things like the lack of enemy types was disappointing, the game did a lot of very key things right. The sense of place was outstanding and completely believable, the storyline was genuinely interesting and the combat was rock solid. The downloadable chapters also added a lot, but The Writer in particular made this game one of my favourites of the year.
Though I wasn't a fan of the original Dead Rising 2 won me over. I can appreciate why people may hate it, and at times I hated this game and it's rigid mechanics, but ultimately it won me over by offering a solid challenge and a satisfying array of awesome weapons.
It may be a little iPhone game, but the constant addition on new levels and the simple pick-up and play nature of Angry Birds made it the perfect mobile game. On top of that it's a great showcase of how fun the iPhone can be, even without impressive 3D graphics.
Though I prefer the original Championship Edition, it's hard to not love this game. While Pac-Man is usually about hiding and struggling to survive, DX is about turning Pac-Man into a bad-ass ghost eating machine. An empowering game if nothing else.
It seems odd having this and the full Dead Rising 2 game on my list, but it's my list dammit! Case Zero was a cheap yet excellent game that made me want the then forthcoming full game even more.
