Hypocrisy, thy name is Giant Bomb

I love Giant Bomb. I've followed the current crew since that other website was called videogames.com. Since the full site launched in July of 2008, GB has provided awesome commentary on video games and other crazy stuff the gang is in to. From Endurance Runs, to Quick Looks, to the Bombcast, to freaking Mailbags; any time a new video is posted here, I have to stop what I'm doing and watch the whole thing. It's been really cool watching this little site grow into one of the most influential gaming sites on the internet.

That being said, I worry for the future.

The GB crew several times has harped on companies who overcharge for DLC and content that should be on the disc. Yet, at the same time, they are going to start charging people a monthly fee for a t-shirt and the ability to access the new and improved mobile website. If that's not hypocritical, I don't know what is. I can download movies and trailers by using a Firefox plugin. I can get HD videos from Gametrailers for free. No advertisements? Once again, there's Ad Block plus. Everything they're offering I can already receive, and for the amazing price of free. What exactly am I paying for here?

How is this any different from publishers charging for game modes that are already on the disc? For GB to get on their soapbox to decry the money-grabbing methods of game companies and come right back and do the exact same thing is off-putting and disgusting.

And what about for the people like me who paid for the iPhone App? Are they just going to stop supporting the paid membership  when it's not profitable anymore?

I don't get it. It seemed like the Whiskey Media group knew what it was doing. Sadly, I was wrong.

A Lot is also hyperbole. You could say A Lot of people voted for Ralph Nader. But by no means, did most people vote for him.

Enough people were bitching for a payment plan to avoid ads on the website, to create the payment plan, there we go. Happy? Stop being so damn anal.

1.5 million is small change. The top sites get that in a day without blinking.

GB is ranked 4321 on Alexa compared to Gamespot's 239. The site I work on is in the top 1000 and we get over 17 million hits a month and it needs major long-term ad sales to keep it running subscription-free. You have no idea of the cost to keep a site alive.

Giantbomb should be free and provide all kinds of content I love for no cost to me at all because that's what I deserve!

If they ever tried to put up an ad, I'd Ad-Block that shit so fast! Charging for a service is such hypocrisy! That's not how it's supposed to work! They're supposed to give me what I want for FREE!

How dare they try and get paid for giving me something I enjoy!

i think that's too far apart. that DLC on the disc is content that's already there, there's no reason to pay for it. a T-shirt is merchandise, and a mobile version is a bonus, neither is already packed in with the site or required to get the full experience.

so....your pissed that they are trying to actually make some money, and you dont feel they should.. like every one else on the internet should never ever make money since you use adblock plus and never allow ad's?
game trailers paid for by ad's other people view the ad's your getting a free ride dick.

they aren't being hypocritical, your being a dick that is basically saying no one should EVER make money ever and you should allways be allowed to get a free ride.
I use adblock plus and I allow every thing on giantbomb so they get ad dollars from me, If a site gives me useful stuff and its ad's aren't obtrusive then I allow ad's on the site.

I like how you brag about using Ad Block Plus, which is freely admitting that you don't even respect Giantbomb enough, to let them reap those advertising dollars.  Not only that, but you're whining about extra features that they are planning to add, despite the fact that they've said that free users will not be denied any of the content they enjoy already. You are a horrible person and are in no way a true fan of the site.  Please go away.

@JokerSmilez: Exactly.
If people don't like minimal ads on their FREE websites, then maybe the internet isn't right for them. I'm so sick and tired of people complaining about ads on the internet, yet those same people are too spoiled and bratty to even consider paying the site in exchange for no ads.

Websites aren't free. They are either paid for by advertisements or the people who visit them. The internet isn't a constitutional right, people. It's a privilege, so either fork over the cash, or quit bitching.

About the Ad problem. Know what I like? Add-ons. That said, adblock is a beautiful thing. <3
I don't plan on paying anyway, it's not really that big of a deal. Even when I didn't have this add-on.

@PrivateIronTFU: I would disagree with you profusely. LP2 is an alright game, and Blazblue is the best fighting game of the past 10 years...but it's wonderful we are capable of making our own minds up about this sort of thing and not cling to whatever game reviewers like Jeff or Brad think isn't it?

I for one, wondered how they made any money to keep going since I rarely saw any ads.  I'm not complaining or anything, just wondering how they were making any money at all.  I'm glad they have been, because this and all the other Whiskey sites are pretty damn awesome.

It's the equivalent of going to a music venue...ya buy merch because you know it's money going to support the band.

...and because yer not some dick hole walmart shopper what would walk into and independently owned shop of hand made items by the very person that owns said shop and then go, "well i can get basicly the same thing for $5 cheaper at walmart".

If ya don't understand just keep walkin.

It's not hypocrisy, it's business, and it's absolutely not the same thing as companies overcharging for DLC. The site as it is will not change, and the extras won't be necessary to enjoy the content you already have access to.  So quit fucking bitching, you entitled sack of shit. "

That is about all that needs to be said. I am comfortable paying to help make a great site better. If you are not, vote with your dollar. They say it all the time on the podcast when it comes to DLC, if you don't like what is going on, don't pay for it. Don't like it? Don't eat.

You understand the concept of bias? A favouring of one thing over another due to a particular tendency or inclination? Thus someone, take Brad, reviewing Starcraft 2 over someone who doesn't like Starcraft 2 is going to have a more positive bias towards the game. You cannot separate bias from the opinion, which is essentially what a review is. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, just like Jeff and his love of Mortal Kombat would explain his MKvDC score. It's the reality of the situation. If they love a game, they will review it with a positive bias..if they hate it,  it will have a negative bias..whatever the quality of the underlying game. That was what I was getting at.

However, if you actually read what i wrote, i intended it to relate to the usual complaints levied at the staff/site. I'm not complaining about the review scores, they are what they are.

Wait. First you complain about them being biased, then you say that other people say they are, and now it's just opinion? Make your mind up already.

And no, bias isn't impossible to get past in reviews. If someone would review Starcraft for example, but gave it a lower score because he preferred some other RTS. That would be bias. Giving your opinion on the game as a whole, and for what it is is not bias.

The paid option won't change anything. If you don't get it, you're not going to lose anything you don't have. You're complaining about the paid service, yet there are little to no ads and those are recent- previously the only way these guys made money was through the Dragon Age QOTW (they were paid for that) the Bioshock 2 ads, etc. If they don't roll this out, there's a good chance that they will fail to make money and shut down, and you will lose the site you claim to love so much.

Also, I don't see how you can complain about any of this stuff when Dave has said that they're still working on what to include, and the things he listed were just what was definitely in there- there may be more awesome shit to come, so don't fucking complain till you know everything.

yeah, seriously. This is how they're making money on their own. If you don't like what this is offering, don't buy it. Keep in mind that they're still working what's going into this thing, so they may devise something awesome. "taking money"? It's not like they're forcing you to pay for the service; they have already said that they're not going to make you pay for anything on the site. You'll be able to keep getting this "awesome content" for free. I want their videos in HD, I'm willing to pay. I don't want ads, I'm willing to pay (without cutting into their revenue by using adblock).

Well, other people do say they are biased. Read the LP2 review.
I didn't complain about the bias, I just pointed out that it existed. I said i found the reviews interesting, I wasn't complaining. You may have inferred that, but i didn't mean to imply it.
Bias is something that modifies an opinion. You seem to think it's a dirty word, but it's not. Not really.
So just as long as the review is positive then it's not bias? Starcraft is a great game and it deserved 5*s, but that score was inevitable with Brad reviewing it. He practically salivated on the bombcast about playing the damn game. TBH I'd rather have a main review and then someone who doesn't like that sort of game do a 'mini-review' side bar just to give a different viewpoint. I suppose that's the point of user reviews, but (no offence to reviewers) they hardly carry the same amount of 'weight' as it were.
Understand, I'm not saying that bias is a bad thing and I'm not complaining about it...I just think it's the reality of the situation that people seem to ignore. There are many people on this site and beyond that believe that the review score is the be all and end all of existence when it comes to video games. I find that belief rather infuriating.
