My last cigarette.

So, here I am, a little after 7:30 on a Wednesday night, and I am dreading using up my last cigarette. Been slowly working myself down over the past month from roughly half a pack a day down to now... my last cigarette for the foreseeable future.

No Caption Provided

Started smoking abroad as it was cheaper and didn't hold most of the negative connotations that exist here in the U.S. I've gone months at a time without smoking but when I get angry or stressed I pick it right back up again. Started smoking again in June due to a drastic increase in stress, and I've been a chimney ever since. Now it's quitting time again and I am mentally preparing myself for the next week of unpleasantness.

Headaches, mood swings, lethargy and the desire to rip out the throat of anyone who even tries to talk to you.

I've done it before, and I'll do it again this time. It's not as hard as everyone else makes it out to be. It really does just take willpower.

It's just not any goddamn fun.

Any other smokers out there trying to quit and want to share in my pain? Any tips etc... for making the process any easier?

Non-smokers who just want to rag on the habit or call it stupid- you can keep it to yourself. Yes, smoking is bad for you, but there are very few cigarettes I've regretted smoking. Not everything in life is measured by the metric of human health. There are aesthetics, (the taste, smell and act of smoking, all of which I enjoy), and the social benefits as well. You can always ask a stranger for a light or a smoke and I've met some crazy people and had some amazing experiences because of cigarettes.

It's never as black and white as your parents tell you. Smoking IS bad for you and IS harmful, but I AM an adult, and I can make my own choices.

Now, I'm choosing to stop. Brace yourself brain: it's going to be a long week.

I used to smoke. I tried weening myself off of cigarettes slowly many times but it never worked. One day I was smoking a cigarette and, like other have mentioned, my lungs and throat were burning and the taste was disgusting all of a sudden. It was that moment when I asked myself, What the hell am I doing this for? I never smoked another cigarette again after that.

You really need to make the decision for yourself, to yourself. I think it takes that kind of mindset to quit. You just really NEED to WANT to, for yourself, not anyone else.

Good luck and I hope you are successful.

You're a bigger man than I, Penelope. Wait a second...

I've never smoked a day in my life, I think it's a filthy habit, and it's really amazing that you're quitting. I don't know for my self, but I imagine it's extremely difficult to stop. Congrats. Don't be sad about the last cigarette, rejoice!

So true. So very true.

That is exactly how I quit over a decade ago. I pushed myself to last longer every time I broke down and had a smoke. 3 days. a week. 3 weeks. a month. etc. Took me over 6 months all told and a solid year of dry heaves at even a whiff of second hand smoke.

Good luck, be strong, you can do it. :)

Also weed helps ;)

good for you, dude. i don't smoke, but a large number of my relatives do and a few have managed to kick the habit after a lot of effort. sadly, the ones that don't are the ones that actually really really should quit.

just think of all the cash you'll have around to spend on your other addictions!

@Tomorrowmansaid:

I highly recommend a good e-cig. I use Volcano. It's not exactly the same, but the things that are different are like going from coke to diet coke. yeah, it's not AS good, but it's still soda and you're getting your fix.

If you're not familiar with it the body of the e-cig (where the tobacco normally is) is a battery. When you inhale off the filter part (which contains an atomizer, and a liquid that contains nicotine and a flavor) the battery activates the atomizer and you inhale vapor. You can get a bunch of different flavors, some are awful and some are amazing. It's just water, nicotine, and a flavor. No tar, no smoke, no pesticides, nothing cancer causing. PLUS no bad breath. I've been using it for around a year now, and I'll continue until the government likely bans them since they don't get a cut.

Yeah, I've been interested in them and I might pick one up once I get more than a couple weeks in to going without cigs.

Right now I just want to kick it all together. So far so good, but man... these next couple of days are going to be rough.

You dismiss smoking as being easier to give up than most people believe, yet you admit you have picked it back up again numerous times? OK buddy.

As my girlfriend always says, "The last cigarette is always the best. Trust me, I've had at least a hundred of them."

But good luck, mate. Let us know if you made it. Here's for a healthier Giantbomb.com (What's that, it's a website.. About games.)

I quit about 3 years ago after decades of the habit, so I feel your pain. Keep your mind occupied with other pastimes and try to avoid places you'd normally smoke. Good luck!

My mother and sister just stopped smoking several days ago and they both said the first 2-3 days were murder but since then they have felt fine and have no craving to smoke.

Put's the pressure on me to stop smoking, I really should as I am 29 and have been smoking everyday for 14-15 years, And it's just so expensive now, I actually started smoking tobacco recently and I doubt I will go back to ready made cigs as I bought 20 pouches from Ibiza 2 weeks ago and have only smoke 2 of them and they were about £5 each, less then 20 tabs and I find if I use good papers and filters they taste fine.

I always heard the gum, or candy replacement. I've never smoked, but I do over eat, so I can relate to an extent.

I wish you the best, and hope you can kick the habit permanently!

Nah, I want to. It's not an intense desire (especially because I actually LOVE smoking) but I don't want to do it for the long haul.

12 hours in, doing fine so far.

I feel your pain. I quit over 2.5 years ago and I loved smoking (but hated it all the same because I could not cut loose from it). I got a prescription for Wellbutrin for about 3 months and it helped. Honestly, it just takes time for all the urges to go away and get used to lifestyle changes. But it gets better and I really do not think about it anymore. Hang in there but you are making the right choice to quit! (I smoked 1.5 packs a day for 12 years).

I tried a couple of times to no avail before getting so pissed off at myself being so dependent on something that I gave up about half a pack a day cold turkey (had been smoking for around 13 yrs).  I personally found the withdrawl part to be easier than I was expecting but the physical and social habits were a nightmare. I still to this day (5 yrs later) still feel like having one with a beer on the patio. I really all comes down to you WANTING to quit. You can't talk yourself into it and neither can anyone else. Unless for whatever reason your not 100% committed to stopping its not likely going to happen. I can tell you that once you reach the point where you can comfortably have very little temptation and have been off them for a while it does make a big change for the better.  Try to avoid being around other smokers where possible to reduce the chances of you slipping.
Good luck and stick at it.

Have something to put in your mouth as a replacement. You're probably really used to having something so having nothing will be quite the change. Maybe have suckers or something to pop in when you get the urge. I'm just going off of what former smokers that I know have told me. Take it in steps, replace with something less harmful, and continue to do so until you are free. Good luck and good for you.

Get a bag of hard candy like some Werther's and leave it in your car. It certainly kept me from wanting to light one up while driving.

This is actually a great idea. The hardest part for people I've talked to is replacing the motor memory of smoking. You're so attuned to lighting up that sometimes you just miss doing it. There's also the nicotine and addictive chemicals, that's a huge part, but when I tried to quit I noticed that it was the act more than the craving that did me in. I just like smoking.

So congrats on your new set of lungs, OP.

Whenever you get the urge to smoke, you should try and replace it with something else. Like, play games or something. It's better than just doing nothing and toughing it out. Try doing something instead of smoking, rather than not doing anything at all.

@Penelope: You could go on a huge drinking bender where you smoke like 2 packs in 8 hours. When I used to do that I couldn't smoke for like a week, it was too painful. Don't drive alone, car pool with a minor or non smoker.

Ha, I've had so many last smokes. Weaning yourself off sucks, it just delays the inevitable, draws it out and gives you more time to second guess. I've recently stopped for 4 weeks, hope I last longer this time. The reason I've stopped this time is because I've had some horrible breathing problems, and my chest is always hurting. The coughing sucks too. So much yellow phlegm. I suggest cold turkey, stay away from anything that you associate with smoking, friends, alcohol.

@Unknown_Pleasures: I did it over the span of a month.

Also, I've done it before. Despite the whiners of other's of my ilk, it's NOT that hard to not buy a pack of cigs, not light one, and not smoke it.

People make lots of excuses but it really is just willpower.
