Backlog 365: Day 22 - Dragon Fin Soup

For Backlog 365 I plan on playing one game on my backlog everyday this year and write about it. For each game I will decide if I want to put it on my "Shelved" list (games that I plan to come back to and play in depth) or put it on the "Retired" list (games that I will delete or sell and move on with my life). I try not to look at reviews of these games before I make a decision on them, but in the case of Dragon Fin Soup, I had to figure out if the game got better. The reviews helped and didn’t help. The majority of them were pretty scathing, but there were a couple of good ones that made me think about giving this game a chance.

Dragon Fin Soup is a role playing game that offers “tactical combat,” although I never got to a point where I felt like there were much tactics involved. There are a whole bunch of systems that make it seem like there is some depth to be mined, but once again I never really got to see them. I was a bit turned off by the juvenile humor in the dialog, but the world being created did fascinate me enough that I could have looked pass it. Ultimately it came down to the fact that I couldn’t overcome the little annoyances – an annoying interface, a difficulty that results in constant retries, and a style that often made it hard to see what was going on. One of the reviews I think hit it on the head [I’ll paraphrase] – it’s a good game made by the wrong people.
