Backlog 365: Day 8 - Super Mega Baseball

For Backlog 365 I plan on playing one game on my backlog everyday this year and write about it. For each game I will decide if I want to put it on my "Shelved" list (games that I plan to come back to and play in depth) or put it on the "Retired" list (games that I will delete or sell and move on with my life).

Here is another game that I played for a bit as soon as I bought it and just kind of forgot about it. I am a huge baseball fan. I listen to a daily baseball podcast every day, even during the off-season. (Effectively Wild, if you like baseball I highly recommend this podcast.) But, yet, I have never really found a baseball game that I like. The last baseball game that I sunk countless hours into was Bases Loaded. I've tried to play MLB The Show, but it's kind of too life like (long and plodding), which doesn't translate to a video game. The Show is a decent simulator, but it can't hold a candle to OOTP baseball. All of the excitement about Super Mega Baseball made me think that it might be the baseball game I was looking for. Honestly, the this was one of the games that helped to convince me to get a PlayStation 4.

So, what happened? Why did I stop playing it? I really don't remember. I guess other games happened and I just sort of forgot about it. When I started playing yesterday it appears that I customized a team, started a season, and played one game. I didn't even remember how the pitching and hitting mechanics worked, and I had to spend some time relearning them. After that I decided to play a game in the season I had created (I mean I spent all that time customizing characters, I owed it to my past self). And, it was alright. Super Mega Baseball is definitely on the arcade-side of the spectrum, and I'm not sure how much depth there is going to be to the game. But, it's definitely fun. The game I played was Super Mega easy (I won 17-0), but they constantly alert you that you can adjust the difficulty, so I'm not worried about that.

Ultimately, I had fun. I really don't know how much of this I'll end up playing, but I'll definitely play it again. I plan to return to Super Mega Baseball when the baseball season is upon us (39 days until pitchers and catchers report, but whose counting) and I get the baseball video game itch, and, hopefully, it will keep me from wasting my money on the next The Show. Therefore...
