Blogging It up a Notch- Pc games, LInux and other awesome stuff!!

Sorry it's been over a week since the last blog but I was working a good bit this week and just never got round to doing a blog. Anyway, I finally got around to getting "Diablo 2" on the pc and have put about 3-4 hours into it so far. Unfortunately I'm really not digging this game. Which is strange because I'm usually a big fan of deep RPGs with a fast paced style gameplay. But despite this I'm still not enjoying it as much as I thought it would be. It's just way too disheartening when I die and thus lose all the gear and loot and what not I have spent the last hour or so slaying my through endless hordes of evil creatures to attain. Maybe it's just a case that I havent had a chance to properly get sucked into it during a 5 hour solid gaming session with it. But either way, I cant see myself playing this a whole lot. Maybe the ever-nearing Diablo 3 release might entice me back, but for now I think I have had my fill of archaic RPGs.

I also picked up another pc game which I had no intention of buying whatsoever, but it came as part of a "2 for 20 euro" offer and Diablo 2 was 15 euro on it's own so I thought I may as well get it. And this game is "Stalker Shadow Of Chernobyll". AS of yet I havent had a chance to install/play it, but I have the day off tomorrow so I hope to. Havent really got any previous knowledge of this game apart from that it is highly atmospheric and an FPS. I've heard mixereviews about it so we shall see how much I enjoy it. Also, this might just be in Ireland, but it seems that Pc games are getting increasingly cheap to buy. I saw a copy of "Rainbow Six Vegas" on Pc for €10 brand new, while a copy of the same game new on the 360 was €30. Has anyone else noticed this sudden price drop in Pc games?

Something unrelated to gaming, but definitely noteworthy in this blog is the Pc issues I was having this week. Basically I went to install Ubuntu on one of my hard-drive partitions, a task I have done numerous times on various machines over the last year or so. However, when I went  to install it this time round the installation process somehow ended up in my vista partition getting completely erased. Which meant me saying a sad farewell to numerous games, photos, softwares, music and many-many game saves. Luckily I had planned ahead and had backed up the essentials such as my music/photos/Documents to my external hard-drive the night before. Which was okay, but I still had to re-install all my games and my game saves are gone forever. Im only really pissed off about losing my "World In Conflict" game save on which I had played through the game on all difficulties as well as getting all the medals and badges and such..
Anyway, Im really enjoying the new Ubuntu (8.04) and have even disgraced myself by giving it a complete mac style makeover. I would post  a screen shot of my desktop put whenever I use the photo-uploader while using ubuntu Firefox crashes on me, so sorry for the lack of photos in this blog.

Anyway, thats about all I have to say for now so until next time, keep it epic!

A new passion?

Well seeing as I am already thoroughly obsessed with both technology and videogames i thought i may as well complete the nerdy lifestyle I seem to live by getting into comics. Comics where something I always wanted to get into but never had the knowledge nor the money, but  I thought seeing as it was summer it was the best possible time to start up new interests. So i started trolling the ifanboy boards on the revision3 forum looking for advice on where to get started in this new hobby. In the last couple of weeks I have read the entirety of Alan Moore's "Watchmen" series, which I really enjoyed and am now really looking forward to the film version that's coming out soon. I'm also getting stuck into "Transmetropolitan" which looks equally awesome. This new hobby also lead me to reading "Maus" which is pretty amazing, basically it's a graphic novel about a guy talking to his dad about how he survived the holocaust, it's really haunting and endearing. I thoroughly recommend that one even if you aren't into graphic novels and the like. So yeah, overall I'm really enjoying my first foray into the comic book world and am looking forward to where it takes me.

On another note, It's sunny for the first time ever in recorded history in Ireland and I'm not quite sure how to deal with the heat. It's only about 22 degrees(celcius), but for Ireland thats about as warm as it gets :). Also, Dark Knight was freaking amazing! But I'm sure you are aware of that already :p

She be a harsh mistress..

Despite my plans to see "The Dark Knight" on opening day (Friday) with a couple of friends Karma struck once again and I ended up having to cover someones shift in work. So instead of bearing witness to the supposed awesomeness of "The Dark Knight" I ended up having to do a ten hour shift,  I did insist that i get double pay for that shift so things didnt work out quite so badly. But I have the day off tomorrow so I should able to catch it then.

In other news, I have decided to give retro gaming one more chance and plan on picking up Diablo 2 tomorrow. Hopefully I'll like it, it sounds like the kind of game I should get hooked on.  Im also really enjoying "Rainbow Six Vegas", I seem really late to the party on this one. I cant believe I havent bought it until now as it is a really fun game to play. Fairly close to finishing this one, I'm just at the end of the "Dante's" level. On top of buying Diablo tomorrow I think I'm going to get a microsoft points card, I have had my 360 almost a year and have yet to buy a XBLA game, shameful I know.
Thats pretty much all I gots to say for the time being, I'm fairly tired from work and such.
One quick question, anyone have any reccomendations for some XBLA titles to get?
Thanks in advance!

I have Come to a Harsh Realization...

I have come to a harsh realization today, the realization being that I can no longer play retro games.  I have,as of late, found myself utterly incapable of playing any retro games.

A lost love?
A lost love?
The latest instance of this was earlier on today when I installed fallout 2. I decided to try it out after hearing how it is one of the best games of all time and all that jazz, but when I fired it up and started to play I just couldn't bring myself to play it. The annoying thing is that i really want to. The premise to the game is great and from what i have read the story is genuinely interesting. I even love the idea of having such freedom in creating your character by giving him certain attributes. But it is pointless, almost a year of having a 360 has ruined me. And now all i seem to look for in games are graphics, explosions and shooting stuff.

I even have a stack of virtual console games downloaded and ready to play on my wii, including such classics as super mario 64,ocarina of time and a link to the past. And even though these games are constantly touted as being among the best games created i cant pluck up the will power to sit through them to the end. I can only seem to stick outdated graphics for so long before i need to play a round of Cod 4 so i can kill some stuff in full hd.

I even tried playing other classic role playing games like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 3/4, but still no luck. I truly want to play some of the older classic games but cant seem to get past the age gap in the relationship. I know age is just a number but i cant pull my attention away from newer more shiny things. My question for the readers out there is if you know of any other retro games I cant help but love and will maybe re-kindle a love for all things retro, or should i stick it out with the games mentioned and grind through them until i find a love for them?

Suprisingly Awesome

For the first of what i hope to be the first of many blogs on this fine site I shall discuss what games took me by surprise at E3 this year.

Mirrors Edge
Mirrors Edge

 Mirrors Edge

From what I saw of this game at E3 this year, I'm certain this game is going to be awesome. Before E3 i thought this game was going to be a great concept but poorly executed, however from the demos I saw of this game the various gameplay elements being implemented seem to gel very well with the look and feel of the game. And to see an fps that seems to be more fun when played without the use of guns is going to be very interesting to see what reaction it gets.

Dark Void
Dark Void
Dark Void

Another space  themed alien shooter with the ever poplar cover mechanic being employed, original stuff. But after seeing alot of footage and reading up on this game it seems like it is doing things very differently to most other games on the market. It has some really cool concepts such as the use of a vertical cover mechanic and the ability to hijack U.F.Os. I cant wait to play this game just to see if it really is all that different from the rest of the shooters on the market at the moment.

Gears Of Freaking War Freaking 2

Gears Of War 2

When it was first announced I was, like most others, suitably happy to see another gears game. But when the first footage came out it was starting to look like "Gears 1.5". However, after seeing cliffy b's demo of the game at the microsoft press confrence it definitely looks like a true sequel. Overall the game looks more epic and some significant changes seem to have been made to the gameplay that will undoubtedly liven up the game.

Finally Fantasy XIII
Finally Fantasy XIII
Final Fantasy XIII

In my many years of gaming, I have yet to enjoy a final fantasy game. I dont know what it is about them, but for some reason they never suit the type of gamer I am. However, when ff XIII was revealed for the 360 at e3 I was suprisingly pumped about it. Hopefully I will be able to enjoy this iteration of the game, and the prospect of achievements in the game only heightens my excitement.

And there you have it, the four games that surprised me most at E3 this year with their pure awesomeness. This year is starting to look like an expensive one in terms of game purchases alone. Giant Bombs away!
