Game of the Year 2013

There will be some noticeable omissions that I just haven't got round to playing, such as The Last Of Us, Assassin's Creed 4 and Saint's Row 4. Also, I haven't got round to the next-gen yet, but onwards!

List items

  • I'd take a bullet for this game.

I know there are a lot of differing opinions on it, but I was completely enamoured from start to finish with this game. The characters, art direction, music, story, and hell, even the gameplay made me love this game, and this is coming from a guy who didn't really enjoy the original Bioshock all that much. No parts of Bioshock Infinite are perfect, but all the great bits come together perfectly.

  • I own a £150 Pokemon machine...seriously.

After sitting out Black/White, I decided Pokemon X/Y was the perfect opportunity(read: excuse) to buy a 3DS and finally see what the fuss was with the machine. It's probably a testament to Pokemon that my 3DS has been gathering dust since one week after the release of Pokemon, waiting for me to buy something else for it...or just play Pokemon some more.

  • Yeah, an obvious choice, but Rockstar make awesome games.

GTAV was a step in the right direction for me, after being annoyed with how up it's own ass I thought GTA4 was. It was drifting back towards the absurd and ridiculous of Vice City and San Andreas, while not going as far to evoke comparisons to the bat-shit crazy Saint's Row 4. Too bad the Online dulled the entire package.

  • This came out this year? Wow...this year seems way too long.

Gunpoint probably flew under a lot of people's radars, and this make me really sad. The writing was on point and hilarious, the gameplay was surprisingly deep, and the pixel art was very nicely done, and sweet Jesus, that music! Hold on, I'm gonna go play Gunpoint again...

  • Arkham Origins is what Arkham City should've been...

Let me explain that: City's open world wasn't good if the movement didn't click for you (it never did for me, just felt clunky). The implementation of a fast travel system would've made Arkham City amazing, and probably better than Asylum. Origins tops City, but fails to beat Asylum despite a good story, great VO performances and the same brilliant combat.

  • Yeah, game is a very loose term here.

I'm a sucker for a compelling narrative in a video game, and Gone Home had me hooked from the very start. I'm probably at the tail-end of what people could consider a 90's kid, but the aesthetic, atmosphere, and all the little nuances around the house I noticed around my own house made the experience something I'll never forget.

  • Kinda like Gone Home in being a kind of non-game, but damn it's fun.

As a guy who loved the British comedy greats like Monty Python, and Black Adder, the witty, sarcastic narrator of The Stanley Parable made me feel right at home as I wandered the office blocks trying to figure out the mystery of my co-workers, the adventure line, the broom closet, and all those damn screens.

  • I'm in Europe, this counts for me as a 2013 release!

I've never been into deep fighters like MvC or Street Fighters, preferring to stick to the American fighters like Mortal Kombat or Injustice, but the Persona universe was enough to make my friend and I buy a copy each and play...and play we did! Hours of fun, good Persona-style writing and a nice epilogue to the P4 story.

  • I picked up Don't Starve quite recently, and have been pretty enthralled since.

As a guy who plays a lot of online games with downtime between matches (League of Legends), Don't Starve fills those sometimes long gaps between games so nicely, it's almost criminal that those are the only times I find the time to play it. The pretty unique art style, the brilliant sound design and you can grow a sick beard! What else you need?!

  • Similarly to Don't Starve, this a game I haven't had a chance to spend a lot of time with, unfortunately.

However, the time I have spent with Monaco has been a blast, and I've loved knocking guards out, digging through walls or sending my beloved monkey Hector to rob some unsuspecting Frenchmen of their hard-earned money>
