You expect bullshit and hyperbole from people like Kaz or Reggie, and are instinctually distrustful, but when the head of an indie dev says something about their game you're inclined to trust them. I think that's part of the issue right there. I don't think it was malicious on Hello Games part, I think they honestly did want and expect all that stuff to be in there, it's just they got pinched by the deadline (which had already been pushed back). What's worse to me than the actual lack of features is the general bugginess of the game, both on console and PC.

Yep, actually answered a question to my blog post regarding this. Bullshottery feels more like the domain of AAA instead of indie dev - although the fact the game's been marketed as AAA only saddens me to think that Murray might have been pushed to hype the game somewhat. I hate to think he had an excuse of the infinite universe where "anything could happen" and that legimised his tall tales.

Edit - just watched the video above with the first five trailers and makes me even more sad. Check out the lightning-quick speed in which you enter planetary atmospheres and land. That bit with the massive crashed ship on the planet too - I had hoped you could salvage stuff from that ship, but nope. Oh, and that portal to another planet? Jeez. So much promise in those trailers. :(

@csl316: The Atlas path seems to end with Interface 11 (First 10 are stones you acquire on the way). I couldn't continue due to the lack of extra Atlas stones though it still remains as a waypoint to travel back to when you get them.

Considering what I've heard on here involving the disappointment when you actually do have all 10 stones, seem like I won't actually bother. Saying that, I got back to playing but treating the game purely as a wandering sim to upgrade stuff and see new planets and wildlife. Feels a bit like Space Animal Crossing? I still dip into New Leaf after years of owning it, so might just treat it like that too.

@jesus_phish: I think I was fooled by Sean Murray's Irish lilt. Foolishly thought there was some genuine feeling they wanted to create the experience they were showing. It's more obvious with the AAA-types and I've actually been involved in that bullshot AAA stuff and felt horrible for doing so.

Quick tip. All that E3 gameplay you'll see often isn't really gameplay. It's scripted to the nth degree to give false hope and whip up the hooting crowds into a frenzy. We've been through this for many E3s - don't take any of it as gospel and use the largest piece of salt you can get your hands on.

The E3 stuff Murray demonstrated was obviously scripted due to - well - the nature of the game being procedural. You couldn't just chance upon a perfect space battle or a planet with the right kind of creatures. Another thing to point out is in a universe which is almost infinite with billions of planets, Murray could have just said "Well, you haven't been to that part of the universe yet, so you won't experience what I'm experiencing - if you'll even ever experience it, that is..."

It makes me kind of sad to see that E3 stuff in hindsight and think how cool it would have been to play the game they were actually showing to people. I hope that future updates to the game actually add the things that were sold to us from the get-go. I'm enjoying the game as a Galactic Walking And Looking Simulator 2016 although I would have dearly loved to have taken part in those epic space battles we were shown.

Also the centre of the universe YouTube reveals. Man. If ever there was evidence that the game was unfinished, there's exhibit A right there.

I'm going to just remind everyone to not sell a certain type of stone.

*sigh*

I think there was a fantastic confidence with this that gives me hope that Tokyo 2020 will be something else. Besides the Mario stuff, they did some great work with the projection mapping and those LED cubes. Could be the best Olympics.

I know I should be in bed now being from Brexit Island, but just caught the Tokyo 2020 sizzle stuff at the Rio 2016 Closing Ceremony. Much videogame-related ness! Although it was a cool high-tech vision of the future, Mario and Pac-Man still made an appearance - in fact, the Tokyo President appeared from a large green warp pipe wearing Mario's clothes. Also after the dancing and projection mapping, it ended with fireworks and the music from the end level of Mario Bros.

Maybe I did dream it? Someone needs to chuck video here to prove I wasn't dreaming...

@alistercat: same problem here, I mustve been playing for 30 hours at least and Im still on my 2nd multitool. First one I found had 14 slots and I've yet to see a better one.

Also: DONT SELL THE ATLUS STONES(Or maybe do...... I dunno, I was kinda bummed I sold em when I found out what they were for)

Don't sell the atlus stones? Gah. I just sold them on for valuable slot space :/ I'll keep a few handy...

Also found out recently about being able to jump past several systems instead of one at a time to get to a waypoint. Wish I'd known about that sooner...

Quick tips -

  • Recently been on the hunt for Iridium - found some on a trade station on a planet, though they can be also mined in rare asteroids and are also on planets as mineral arches. Word of caution - seems like only the top bit is mine-able. The base of the arch gets you nada.
  • Moons are excellent. First moon was totally desolate except for a load of minerals and things to grab. Also they look cooler to navigate with that space stuff in the sky. My second moon was a Scorched Moon and actually grabbed 8/10 species in the first clearing I landed in. It was totally full of creatures.
  • You can always upgrade your suit with added protection against extreme conditions. Always remember to keep the protection topped up with oxides and/or shielding shards. I spent a pleasant time on an acid rain planet with storms and the protection worked just fine.
  • I land these days by rotating the ship 90 degrees so I can see what I'm heading for and line myself up.
  • You can save a bit of plutonium for your launch thruster if you find a base with a landing pad. If you don't land on the pad, just use a bypass chip to bring your ship over to the pad. Also when dealing with the trade post inside, you'll also then have access to both inventories.
  • Bit of a no-brainer - the more valuable stuff you have as cargo on your ship in space, more likely that space pirates will pay you a visit. They can drag you out of pulse, so only guarantee to escape is a warp jump - or the safety of a nearby station.
  • Always take advantage of the jetpack. I often find a high vantage point on a mineral block and scope the area for stuff to scan.
  • Nice trick with recharging in battle - you can actually click on the thing you recharge with first and then click on the thing to recharge. Feels quicker when in battle.
  • Learn all the words. Monoliths and ruins give you around 3 of those stones to learn new words with. Don't forget there's four languages to learn.
  • You can always back out of a conversation without selecting either option just in case you are unsure or need to get the correct thing to give.
  • Always check out the galactic trade trend when buying stuff from traders - green means you're getting it cheaper, red means it'll be more expensive.
  • Never done this but it's a sure-fire way to be able to scan creatures in flight - shoot one down and scan its corpse. Yey, space exploration!

Bought it yesterday and although I trimmed down the settings some (my PC ain't great at gaming), really enjoying the experience. Here's the thing - I've played it for about 8 hours with not a single crash or bug out. Mileage may vary, etc.
