It’s some sort of renaissance for the fighting genre of video games and I could not be happier.
I remember when I got the opportunity to play online Street Fighter with my brothers via Xbox Live. I think it was CAPCOM vs. SNK 2 or Street Fighter Anniversary Collection back in the Xbox 1 generation. Online gameplay had a promise of great things to come.
Still, the genre did not fully resurrect then. Most people on the consoles would rather play games like SOCOM: 2 on the PS2 or Halo on the Xbox. Personally, I would buy all kinds of fighters but many were not online compatible while others (MK5, 6,and7) were not that popular with my peers.
On the current generation, Virtua Fighter 5, Tekken 6, Soul Calibur 4, for example, Guilty GearXX, and some PSN or XBLA have had somewhat of a good audience but it wasn’t until Street Fighter 4 that the genre truly resurfaced. There are a lot of great fighters now and several many more on the way. The VS. series are back and even new ones have developed such as MK vs. DC Universe and the upcoming Street Fighter X Tekken.
The franchises that were on top during the 90’s are still the ones leading today; Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and Tekken, to name a few. It’s interesting how none of the less popular fighting games that flooded the market back then survived. Most were rip-offs and clones but a couple had good ideas.
I heard Jeff mention that Street Fighter X Tekken felt ‘’broken’’ but I know he’s into fighting games too and I’m sure he means it in a good way. Street Fighter’s hadokens and Tekken’s juggles CAN work,
just ask the new Mortal Kombat.
