Pixel's Recommendations: 2013 edition

Well 2013 is over and I wanted to make a list of games I really enjoyed over this year. Usually a lot of sites and individuals make their “top list” near the end of the year, but I was busy with visiting family and what not so I haven’t had a chance to get around to doing this until now, but hey better now than never right?...right? Anyway as usual at this time nothing is coming out game wise so take a gander at my list. Maybe you’ll find something that will hold you over till the next big release on your gaming calendar.

Risk of Rain

Developer: Hopoo Games

Steam store page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/248820/?snr=1_7_15__13

Risk of Rain was one of those games that really scratch my grinding itch, but what I really enjoyed was the presentation the world was very mysterious the soundtrack is incredible and on top of that the game is great to play solo or coop. There’s a lot I can say about this game, but I already did in my “IMO’ here’s the link: http://www.giantbomb.com/risk-of-rain/3030-42529/user-reviews/2200-26742

Ridiculous fishing

Developer: Vlambeer

Android store page: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vlambeer.RidiculousFishing&hl=en

iOS store page:https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ridiculous-fishing-tale-redemption/id601831815?mt=8

This game is awesome. Ridiculous fishing is a simple game with a lot of depth (no pun intended). There are tons to unlock and a whole lot more to laugh about. This is a fantastic little title to have on your android/ios devices.

Injustice

Developer: NetherRealm Studios

Steam store page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/242700/

Available on Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, WiiU

Now when I heard NetherRealm was making a DC fighter I was cautiously optimistic. Then my worries faded away once I played the game. The single player content is fun, the online isn't broken, and the mechanics are simple to get into, but deep enough were you can spend hours pulling off complex combos. Overall this is a fantastic fighter.

Grand theft auto 5

Developer: Rockstar North

Available on Xbox 360, PS3

This game is the most ambitious game I've played in a while. The whole idea behind the game was nuts and the fact that Rockstar north pulled it off is even more so. The online is alright, but don’t let that stop you from the superb single player.

Rogue legacy

Developer: Cellar Door Games

Steam store page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/241600/?snr=1_7_15__13

Rogue legacy is a awesome throwback to old metroidvania games of the 90's, but unlike those old titles it dose it with a rouge like twist. The gameplay loop is addictive to say the least with every run getting you closer to unlocking a new ability or class. Just like Risk of Rain this is another title I found myself coming back to over and over again.

Bioshock Infinite

Developer: Irrational Games

Steam store page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/8870/?snr=1_7_15__13

Available on Xbox 360, PS3

The story and world Irrational created is unique and nothing like I’ve have seen before. The combat is slick and responsive as for the presentation it’s top notch. There may be some plot holes here and there, but if you don’t nit-pick the story at every turn. You’ll find an insane rollercoaster ride in a more insane world.

Guacamelee

Developer: DrinkBox Studios

Steam store page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/214770/?snr=1_7_15__13

Available on PS3, Vita

Another take on the metroidvania formula Guacamelee blends its fun combat and thrilling platforming with an incredible world filled with hilarious characters. What I loved most about this game is its flow. The game gradually teaches you new abilities that will help you master the platforming which will become more challenging especially if you trying to complete the game fully, also there is co-op so yay for that.

A ride into the mountains

Developer: Chia-Yu Chen & Lee-Kuo Chen

Android store page: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.leoexe.archery

iOS store page: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/a-ride-into-the-mountains/id663106965?mt=8

That's right another android/ios game that made it to my list. A ride to the mountains is a across between angry bird’s and shadow of the colossuses. The game play is simple, but the story is epic. This is a hidden gem that all android/ios users should not overlook.

Ok well there you have it folk’s my list of games you guys should check out of 2013. Again this isn’t really a “top whatever” list it’s just some recommendations.

Pixel's Indie Recommendations

At this time during the fall season the gaming industry is in full swing many of big name games are coming out such as GTA, Battlefield, and add on top of that the fact two new consoles are being release. There's a lot to grab your attention and unfortunately some of the smaller stuff weather it's this year or last just get push to the side to never be seen from again. Well instead of me hopping on the next-gen hype train or talking about the big releases of this year I'm gonna scale it back and talk about three smaller games that may have flew under your radar.

Super House of Dead Ninjas $6.99 USD

Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/224820/?snr=1_7_15__13

First up is a game from Adult swim which has made quite the rep these days as a indie publisher. "Super House of Dead Ninjas" is a vertical platformer were you plays as a female ninja who's task is to find out what's up with the spooky tower and all those who have enter before her. The graphics of the game invokes a Super Nintendo game with the difficulty to boot. The game will punish reckless play, but awards precise reactions a la "Super Meat Boy" you have full control of the avatar at all times, but be quick and nimble or best kiss your butt goodbye. When you go deeper in to the tower you'll start to unravel the mystery behind it all the while completing challenges to unlock new skins, weapons, and gear. If your looking for a though platformer then you can't go wrong with this plus there's DLC.

No time to Explain $9.99 USD

Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/227280/?snr=1_7_15__13

Second on list is "No Time to Explain". This game is a puzzle platformer with a ridiculous sense of humor in which you play different versions of yourself to stop a evil version of..well..yourself through time and space. The look may remind you of a something on newgrounds with it's cartoon flash visuals, but what the game lacks in visuals it makes up in style and gameplay. Whenever you enter a world it will open with a cut scene which by the way are hilarious explain the rules of the world and by rules I mean the mechanic to get you the the next set of levels. They game can be challenging fortunately the punishment is minimal just resting you that last place you were standing on. There are a bunch of unlockables in from of hats which in some case completely replaces the characters head. I recommend this if your looking for a funny challenging puzzle platformer.

Super Amazing Wagon Adventure $2.99

USDStore Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/250500/?snr=1_7_15__13

The last game on the list is called "Super Amazing Wagon Adventure" it's a satire on the "Oregon trail" series. The look of the game falls along the line of a commodore 64 game and the gameplay alternates from being a dual stick shooter like "Robotron" to a shoot'em up like "R-type". You and your group which can be customize to be whoever you want only have one goal and that is to make it to the end. Simple enough right? Well instead of worrying about food and dysentery you need to worry about ninjas and the physical manifestations of your inner demons. To say this game has a sense of humor is an understatement, but the thing is to truly appreciate how absurd the game is to play it and may I recommend to play it along with others. The game doesn't have any multiplayer it's one of those games were one can play while others sit back and enjoy this insane voyage you have embark. Out of all the games I strongly recommend everyone checking this title out.

If none of these games jump out to you I still urge everyone to take a look at the indie section on whatever device you do most of your gaming on. There are awesome titles out there that don't have the marketing push that some of the bigger titles do. You may need to put a little effort on your part, but trust me you won't be disappointed.

Here's to you Mister Davis

The King of Summerjams
The King of Summerjams

I am shock and sadden to hear the news about the passing of one of our great bomb lords. I still couldn't believe that it was real, but unfortunately I had to come to terms with it and in doing so my heart sank.

At first it was wired I find myself asking how could a person I've never met have such a profound impact on me? I had ponder on it for a moment then I realized why. It was simple he and the rest of the guys have become apart of my life routine. On the good days, the bad days, studying for an exam, and so on the Giantbomb crew were in the background cracking jokes and doing all kinds of crazy crap all the while keeping me up to date on what's hot/stupid in the gaming world.

Especially Ryan. He has giving me an embarrassingly amount of riches in the form of amazing/funny moments whether it be in video, informative articles, trust worthy reviews, or on the bombcast. He was always on point...It was beautiful man...and for that I am forever grateful for everything Ryan has done for both Gamespot.com and Giantbomb.com over the years. I don't know what else to say, but that my heart goes out to his family and friends. As well as...well thank you...Thank you Ryan Davis.

I miss you already Papa Bear

And with that I wanted to end this with one of my favorite quotes from the NochoBoss himself.

"It's 18 years old, Daytona USA. You could fuck it if you wanted to." - Ryan Davis
