Horror 101. also, Eyes Without a Face (1960) and Jodorowsky films. while all these recommendations are good (especially Cannibal Holocaust),

i ask that you watch The Human Centipede, and tell me the impenetrable doctor (Dieter Laser) does not give you the creepy creeps. Evil exists, my friends, and i have seen it on a leathery, German face. i average about eight horror/thriller movies and books per week, and the single thing that has succeeded in unsettling me in all this has been the doctor-- because my body won't believe he is acting.

Requiem For a Dream had me tossing and turning in bed...

someone said Re-Animator, but seeing mr. Jeffrey Combs in any movie now makes me giggle. if you want the comic horror, Shaun of the Dead is supreme.

Inception horns are now a pre-requisite in hollywood trailers. 'Pacific Rim' has it, also.

Brad Pitt is giving me flashbacks to Independence Day by way of Seven Years in Tibet, and his having a family with Mireille Enos is as believable as that CG swarm of zombies.

if X-Files went to shit after season 5, Fringe went to diarrhea in late season 2. Fringe has so many time paradoxes and plot holes with the conclusion of the show. despite all the fringe elements, though, both are essentially about blood (fatherhood in the latter, brother/sisterhood as well as fatherhood in the former)--and struggling with identity. personally, i prefer X-Files, because aliens > nazi albinos. also, i never cared about Olivia Dunham and That Dawsons Creek Guy.

I would rather have irrational and arbitrary choices from arguments than a mathematically precise summation of their personal lists.

haha.

also, it's obvious the current individual "votes" = entirely too dependent on what is or is not poised to make the overall GOTY. consolation awards, and the like. i'm guessing the numbers will look a little different if the crew were told there would be no overall GOTY deliberations at all, and instead, it will only be sweet democracy and maths.

take Alex Plays Terrible Games off the table, i implore you.

i agree with the people here that Alex has a particular bite, and some of us are itchin' for video footage of that in action.

however,

  • not all "really bad games" are conducive to entertaining, cathartic footage; some of those games are just plain repetitive and broken, with no soul or charm. no material to make fun of. for the player, gameplay could immediately devolve to solely swearing & groaning every few seconds--and yes, i am aware, sometimes, that can be amusing for viewers to watch, but i find that to be true mostly only when the wide-eyed of players roll with the punches without letting things take them out of the game-fun-having (see: Saint Vinny) or they have severely short attention spans and immediately become too distracted by some other grievance to really cultivate rage. i'm afraid Alex is neither of these. that is, from what i've heard, he doesn't hold anything back. he punches right back. also, a reminder: he "lost his mind answering repetitive emails" (source: GB wiki) in the past.
  • on top of the regular duties, added weeks of consistently playing "the bottom of the barrel" (esp. the dullest kind with no soul or charm), swallowing resulting frustrations, and braving the inevitable internet hate will pickle any joy right out of him. moreover, making someone suffer through terrible anything alone is unethical. it's not especially productive, either, since there is no bouncing of ideas and natural flow of conversation. there's a reason a lot of these Angry Gamer-type videos feature two or more players.
  • there's a good chance that Alex's writing 'voice'--which may be the end-product of brainstorming, contemplation, research, etc--doesn't come into play in un-scripted Let's Play-type video format.
  • while Hall of Lame/Uncyclopedia Bombastimeh/I Play Bad Games/etc is a missing feature on Giant Bomb, it's quite prevalent elsewhere, most notably on YouTube, where Giant Bomb also uploads vids. i would like to see Giant Bomb spread the love (reach a wider audience) with market differentiation. i sense a golden opportunity, here.
  • unlike the bulk of those YouTube channels, Giant Bomb also flies the flag of video-game journalism. it's easy to slash something to pieces; it takes a skillful and seasoned hand to use a scalpel and save it. Alex has shown he is more than capable of being this hand in his written articles.

if the people have spoken, and bad games must be played, what about this:

  • set parameters: limit the "really bad games" to games that scored one star from a Giant Bomb editor, or 30 & below from Metacritic, etc.
  • you are a realtor. treating the above game as a Fixer-upper house you are selling, make a video brochure showing off the "house." we want the deets on property value {start each episode with, "if this game were a house...,"and finish the sentence with a famous-y movie realty reference ["...it would be that outhouse in the T-Rex scene in Jurassic Park (1993)...")]}, meth-addict neighbours, the holes in the floors, the cult killings. stories, observations, digressions. advertise the property before the making this brochure, so users (aka Prospective Buyers) can email you the weirdest and most absurd questions about the "house" (or about something completely random) and you can address those in the video. just as a crummy house can be made into a cozy home, a large portion of a gaming experience is what the player brings to the the table. remember, you need the commission.spin it, and sell it to us!

i enjoy reading your thoughts on Giant Bomb. whatever you end up doing, please do something you would love doing.

Most annoying part of the GOTY podcasts:

Patrick: "[Something]-"

Somebody Else: "[Trying to contribute to the discussion]"

Patrick: "[SOMETHING LOUDER UNTIL FINISHED]"

under stress, people's voices change: tensing of speech-production muscles, increased vocal pitch, increased speed of speech, and repetition of words or phrases are all normal dysfluencies. in a stressful situation (as in the podcasts and on Quick Looks), stuttering usually occurs on the first sound of the first word. i've made this observation before, but i suspect that Patrick might have very mild form of stuttering; when he is interrupted while talking, he repeats the first sound of the word he was saying at that point, several times in rapid succession, each at an increasing volume, until he can finish out the thought. the same happens when he, in turn, jumps in and interrupts someone else.

what i'm saying is it could well be an involuntary psychophysical response--and not some intentionally mean-spirited offense. it sounds silly and i doubt it would happen, but it would help if they would raise their hand to speak with Ryan directing vocal traffic.

it seems to me that a lot of how that final top 10 played out had as much to do with fatigue and wanting to get the podcast over with than it did about righteous choosing of the year's best games. Since the overall GOTY is the most important bit of the end of year awards, perhaps that should be the first thing deliberated on in future, when everybody is still fresh and engaged in the process, as opposed to the last when everyone is tired and the giving of fucks is few and far between.

I also agree with a previous poster that it makes more sense to make the top 10 a top 3 ordered choices, with seven honourable mentions. The ordering of the bottom seven is stupid and meaningless.

yes and yes.

deliberating on the most important overall GOTY on Day One makes so much sense. if they want to keep the suspense throughout the week, they could simply record first, and release on Day Five.

changing from 'Top 10' to 'Top 3' would mean much more bloodshed since each person wouldn't be able to concede to taking the lesser consolation categories. and user consensus seems to be in favour of increased bloodshed. personally, i'd like that, also. sadly, the GOTY podcasts do not feel like they are for the regular user: these GOTY podcasts seem to be for the transparency of the picking process, largely a dutiful (journalistic?) explanation to--and a teeny handshake with--industry professionals, and as such, i don't see them culling the 'Top 10.'

I watch the first 7 minutes of the Star Wars Christmas special with the original cast.

I give it 1/10 and I am generous.
