Games Completed in 2011

Games I've finished so far this year. Listed in order of favorite to least favorite.

List items

  • When I first started (after picking it up at the midnight launch, naturally) I was kind of overwhelmed by the sheer amount of things to do. This was an amazing game that just totally went above and beyond my expectations. It improves upon Arkham Asylum in almost every way, and while I fell that the design mantra was kind of "Assassin's Creed with Batman" that isn't necessarily a bad thing. I also think they did a superb job with Catwoman. She is the complete opposite of Batman combat-wise (in addition to other traits....) and provides a wonderful change of pace at various intervals throughout the game. She is just as much fun to play as the Dark Knight himself, at least in combat and stealth roles; Bats has a slight upper-hand in travel. While the whip and the climbing system work well for Catwoman, they aren't as good for traveling around the map as quickly as Batman can with his Gliding and Grappling; add in the grapnel boost and Catwoman falls even further behind. These, of course, are minor complaints and doesn't change the fact that this was a superbly crafted game by a team of dedicated and passionate people, and I can't wait to see what they will do next. Perhaps a Catwoman focused game? Or maybe a DC character from a different franchise, such as Superman? He could do with a good game since every Superman game made to date has been terrible.

  • Well, it looks like this is now my SECOND favorite game that I've finished this year; it may be going even lower after November, but let's not let that diminish the fact that this was still a superb game and my excitement for ME3 is still at it's peak. It was an amazing experience from start to finish. Also one of the few games that I've completed more then once; on multiple systems nonetheless!

  • Well, naturally this game would be high on this list since Shadow of the Colossus is my second favorite game of all time. To be perfectly honest, I haven't finished (or even played) it yet, but I've completed Ico about five times already. Why five times? Three of them were spent trying to get the "Castle Guide" Trophy, which is a 2 hour speed run of the entire game. It took me three attempts to get it, but I finally got it with a time of 1:42:38. I do plan to play SoTC soon, but with Forza 4 and Arkham City to play, as well as the God of War: Origins Collection, I'm having a hard time finding enough spare time to play it. I'm really looking forward to playing it again though.

  • **WARNING, SPOILERS BELOW**

Great game, and a great sequel. I don't see why it got such lackluster reviews. I thought it was a much better game then Infamous 1; much more fleshed out and refined. Overall it was a great game, and has inspired me to go back and play through Infamous 1 again, which I got when it came out, but never completed. I also prefer Cole's new voice as opposed to the gravel-tone used in inFamous 1. It's like they were trying to make him sound like Solid Snake, but failed. I very much enjoyed this game, and look forward to more entries in the franchise. However, the Good ending has me questioning if that will ever happen, seeing as how Cole is dead. But then they go and confuse me with the Evil ending, which would seem to make a new entry possible, with Cole as The (new) Beast. Seeing as how that was the inFamous ending, and that is the name of the franchise, it seems likely that the evil ending would take precedent over the good one. But how they will explain away the good ending and Cole's death is beyond me. I just hope to see more from this franchise. Until then, Prototype & Prototype 2 will have to suffice.

  • ****MINOR SPOILERS BELOW****

Man, what an experience this was. Going in, I knew the game was going to be derivative, however it happens to be derived from some of my favorite games ever made. There's Shadow of the Colossus, Assassin's Creed, God of War, some Metal Gear Solid and even a little Ikaruga at the very end. Plus a little Portal Joke thrown in for good measure. This game has Werewolves, Vampires, Ogres, Demons, Giant Spiders, Goblins and just about every fantasy creature you can think of; plus a semi-Bestiary. This game is worth checking out based on that alone! One thing I WASN'T expecting however, was the length of the game. I mean, I knew it came on two discs on the 360 and filled up most of a Blu-Ray, but I wasn't expecting so much variety in the levels. This game also has a TON of hand-drawn 2D animation in the travel book, plus gobs and gobs of artwork to buy. Clearly this game was made by some very talented and dedicated people, and it shows. There were parts where I could only laugh at how incredibly derivative the game was being. In particular there was a section where you run across a giant chain with a dramatically distant camera angle to show how tiny you are compared to the landscape around you; a scene pretty much directly copied from God of War 2. Not to mention the three Boss fights which are pretty much exact replicas of Shadow of the Colossus fights. I'm not complaining about these moments; especially the SoTC Bosses, since that is my second favorite game of all time. I'm just saying, maybe they could have been a little less transparent when choosing their inspirations. Another thing to laugh at would be the disastrous decisions of casting Robert Carlye as Gabrieal. I mean, yeah, no. The Irish accent was not something that added to the character in a good way. At least they got Patrick Stewart though, right? All good games have Patrick Stewart! Sure, some of the systems could have used a little more work (especially the platforming) but overall I thoroughly enjoyed this game. However I do have one rather large complaint: It never felt like I was playing a Castlevania game. I think that Castlevania will never feel like Castlevania unless it is in 2D, probably in no small part due to Symphony of The Night and the series' roots. But regardless, bravo to Mercurysteam for making the first great 3D Castlevania game; even if it didn't feel like one. And bravo for making a great game period. I still haven't played through either of the two DLC's, but I can't wait to see how the story ends. I definitely wasn't expecting the dramatic twist after the credits.

  • I finally went back to my old save from 2009 and completed this game after having enjoyed inFamous 2 so much. I then proceeded to complete it again, taking a different karmic path. I only slightly enjoyed it less then inFamous 2. But it was a great game. The graphics on this game compared to 2 were pretty bad, but other then various other minor tweaks and improvements, it stands toe-to-toe with it's sequel.

  • Finally got around to playing this game after hearing so much about it over the years. I'm glad I finally got a chance to play it because it was awesome. I hope they make a sequel.

  • This was a much better racing game then GT5, IMO. Can't wait for 4.

  • This was a really fun game. I really liked the art style and the blue/red mechanic. The boss fights were also great; challenging, but not too hard or frustrating. There were some annoyances though, and therefore if I could change three things about this game, it would be the following:

    1. Have checkpoints fully heal you when activated.

    2. Make it so when you reach a checkpoint, then quit the game you don't have to start over from the beginning of the level! I mean, what's the point of the whole checkpoint system if we have to restart the entire level if we quit?

    3. Half Heart damage. I think certain weaker enemies and possibly even traps should do half heart damage instead of full heart damage. I don't know...it just seems like it would make things a little less annoying in the early stages of the game when you only have 3 or 4 hearts.

    Still, a fantastic game.

  • I have owned this game for quite a while on Steam, but never got around to playing past the first few levels. Well, that changed a few days ago. I was playing it and just couldn't stop myself, I was enjoying it so much. Anyways, about 6 hours later I had completed it. Overall, I enjoyed it very much and it has me looking forward to Trine 2. However, I can already see an issue with T2's much advertised co-op: Everyone is going to want to play as the Thief, and nobody will want to be the Wizard. This is a fact, and anyone who played this game knows it to be true. So, I wonder, are they going to allow three people to play as the thief or are people going to have to force someone to play the wizard? Not that it matters to me, I won't be playing any Co-Op with Trine 2, but still, I can see that as being an issue.

  • What a joy to play this game was. The artwork is incredible and the game-play is surprisingly deep. The music was also awesome. This was a fine first game from Supergiant and can't wait to see what else they can come up with. My only problem with it is that it is pretty short. I was able to complete two playthroughs in just a few days, so the asking price of $15 seems a bit steep. It's still a very beautiful and well made game though. This is probably my second favorite XBLA game I have played this year.

  • I REALLY liked this game; especially the Noir Realm, even if it was a blatant rip off of Arkham Asylum. I'm disappointed that the squeal/next game from Beenox is going to focus on my two least favorite realms from this game. I REALLY hated the 2099 realm, namely due to Miguel's stupid voice. I don't see the logic Beenox is following with the squeal.

  • This game was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and story. The game-play mechanic was also very unique. I can't wait for the DLC.

  • You'd think after 7 years in development, they would have been able to come up with a better ending to the story. I was seriously disappointed with all the loose ends left after completing the game. Nevertheless, this was one of the best gaming experiences I've had this year. Also, I hated Cole Phelps. I'm just utterly confused by his personality and motives, as I'm sure he is (was?) too. I also hate his name; it's like a mixture of Cole McGrath from inFamous, and Michael Phelps. I was half-way expecting him to have electric super powers and be a world class swimmer (and pot smoker) but none of that was to be had.

  • Loved it. It was a bit hard a first, but once you get used to it, it's not too bad. Was also kind of short, but I think it's about on par for an XBLA release. I was also a bit put off but it's "flash game" quality. But all in all, a great game.

  • A great sequel, and one of the funniest games I've ever played, bar none. Since I don't play online, I was unable to play half of this game; that being the co-op portion, which is disappointing because it looks like fun and the single player campaign was kind of short. I played this on PS3, which means I also got a free copy on the PC through Steam. unfortunately, you can't play them both simultaneously or through co-op, which is totally stupid. I had planned to try playing co-op with myself in this manner, but unfortunately that isn't an option. My only hope of seeing the co-op portion is by buying another PS3 controller; something I'm not sure I'm willing to do. Still, it was a good game from what I was able to play by myself.

  • I don't know if you can technically "beat" or "finish" this game, but I played the hell out of it. Love it.

  • Played it on 360. Was pretty good actually, which I wasn't expecting. This is probably the first Lara Croft game I've ever liked enough to finish. Makes me excited for the Lara Croft reboot.

  • I beat the Story Mode and unlocked all of the Krypt...so, that counts as finishing it right? I still need to complete the Challenge Tower and finish "Arcade Mode" with the rest of the fighters though, so maybe not...?

  • I went back to finish ME1 after completing 2 for the first time. It was quite a shock going back after having completed 2; so much changed between the two games. I can definitely see why the RPG fans were complaining about how it was toned down in 2, but overall I think ME2 was a superior game compared to 1. It's like, in 1 they were trying so many different things and had so much to establish, while in 2 it feels like everything is being refined and honed to a sharp edge of video game goodness.

  • I made the mistake of playing this on PS3. This game looks absolutely terrible in some places on that system. Also, the game gives an awful first impression. After playing through the first chapter I thought I had made a huge mistake in playing this game and wouldn't be able to tolerate it to the end. Luckily, it got much, much better as time went on and I found myself enjoying it more and more. The story is crazy and confusing, but you can't help but love Alice and all the crazy places she goes to. I was especially fond of Chapter 3 and Chapter 5. I'm a big Steampunk fan, so you'd think I would have enjoyed the first chapter more, but it was far too muddled by tutorials and the learning curve. This game has plenty of flaws, and it made me quite angry in certain spots; it's also ugly as hell on PS3, but in spite of all this, I still enjoyed this game.

  • I liked this game a lot, but I was expecting so much more. The total experience from start to finish was incredible short. It looks great and has some cool bosses and interesting puzzles, but it was way, way too short. I definitely don't feel it's worth the $15 price tag, especially since I have no interest in the online aspect.

  • Overall a pretty good game. It was really short though and totally not worth what I paid for it. I dug the art style and totally unexpectedly violent deaths.

  • I liked this one better then the first one...mainly because it wasn't as freakin' long. The story was the high point.

  • I like Suda51. I like Grasshopper Manufacture inc. Shadows of the Damned...? I thought it was okay. It was very linear, which I was expecting; it was very short, which I wasn't really expecting but kind of was; it was very easy (on normal at least); there were some technical issues, such as lots of texture pop-in, which is expected of the Unreal Engine, and plenty of just plain ugly textures. (I played this on PS3) And then there was the story, which was filled with constant phallic-related and sex related jokes, most of which were not funny. I question the maturity level of Mr. Suda51, and I also question his sanity. But then again, he is Japanese. Overall, it was a pretty good game. I'm not sure why it got such raving reviews though. I thought Infamous 2 was a much better game and it got considerably less favorable reviews. I'll be glad to get my platinum for this game and send it back on it's way to GameFly.

  • I was into racing games pretty big for a while, and technically I've already finished this, but I went back and played it all again. It's a great off-road racer. One of the best, maybe.

  • Overall was a disappointment. I was probably expecting too much from it due to it's loooong development. I'm also surprised there has not been any DLC for it.

  • Got it while it was on sale on XBLA. Didn't really care for it as much as others seem to.

  • This was an OK game. It was way too easy and very short. Probably should have just rented it because I beat it in two days and returned it.
