My Top 10 Games of 2014!

Tis the season to play way too many video games. Here is the list of all the games I played this year which also incidentally came out this year. You know, I'm tempted to just having rolling yearly lists which I just update as I complete games, regardless of when I play them. Perhaps that'll be a new year's resolution?

This year, much fewer has slipped through the net, due to my purchase of a Wii U and Xbox One. I still can't play PS4 exclusives (The Last of Us will have to wait another year...), and some PC games I skipped due to fear of not having a powerful enough PC (sorry Divinity: Original Sin!), but other than that, I feel good about what I ended up experiencing this year. Still feeling pangs of regret for Dragon Age: Inquisition, Alien: Isolation, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Destiny, D4, Monument Valley, 80 Days, Goat Simulator, Valiant Hearts: The Great War and This War of Mine. Here's to giving these games a whirl in 2015!

And with that, lets begin.

List items

  • What a surprise. This game delivers on many levels - the world is beautifully realised, the gameplay is a wonderful blend of old and new, and the story, believe it or not, is chilling and compelling in all the right ways. The technology is impressive too, maintaining the game's striking look at a solid 1080p60 on all platforms. It's great to see Id Tech 5 applied to a game worth playing.

  • Fun in a box. The art is beautiful, the traversal is exhilarating; but most of all, every aspect of the game - design, look, sound, writing... even rock-solid tech - feel beautifully consistent and give the player a huge sense of freedom, empowerment and joy. What a fantastic return to form for Insomniac.

  • The masterminds behind Call of Duty 4 are back. Titanfall is all about giving you new toys to play with - whether it's jumping over rooftops, sneaking around the AI grunts or spawning a huge Titan to stomp on your foes. Despite all these new features, the game is well balanced, and the "Pilot vs Titan" gameplay remains interesting well into the 20 hour mark.

  • After the straightforward yet superbly realized Bastion, Supergiant Games decides to take more risks with Transistor. The gameplay, world and characters feel much more unique here, which adds up to a more interesting, even if occasionally flawed, experience.

  • Mario Kart gets HD treatment. It looks stunning, the design has been tweaked to perfection, with the exception of the tragically ruined Battle Mode, and the online is as good as ever. I'm still left wishing the game offered a stronger solo experience, but it's hard to imagine a Wii U party where this game isn't taken for a spin.

  • Film noir meets classic fairy tales. After nailing the concept of a "decision engine" in The Walking Dead, Telltale tries the formula on a new, more interesting IP. While the gameplay doesn't fit as well as TWD, it still excels at giving you strong feelings of regret, and ultimately the excellent writing and music carried me to the end.

  • I've always had a casual interest in understanding fighting games. The tactical mind games that people speak of sound so appealing, if only they weren't hidden far behind a wall of tricky-but-uninteresting execution. Lethal League manages to simplify and repackage all that into something much more immediately enjoyable, but still surprisingly deep and satisfying. And boy, does it have a soundtrack.
