Ok I just needed to mess with the display settings on the TV, now everything's fine.  It does seem like the color isn't as intense as when I had it hooked it up with component cables, I'd have to do a side by side comparison to be sure.

So my xbox died back in december, I made a thread about it here if some of you remember.  After waiting a month for them to send me what turned out to be a refurb, I finally set it up yesterday.  I hooked it up to the TV with the VGA cable so I could use the component input for my wii.  I tested it this morning and the display is shifted off to one side, the image is cut off on one side and there's a black border on the other.  The TV is a samsung 22" LCD with a native resolution of 1660x1050.  I did the obvious first step of messing with the resoultions in the settings but the TV won't display the image unless it's set to its native resolution.  I'd previously had the 360 hooked up to this TV with component and everything was fine, before that I had it connected to a monitor with the VGA cable and the was fine too.  Has anyone else had this issue and know of a fix?  I admit I haven't fiddled with it extensively so I can't say I've tried everything yet but I thought someone on here might have had a similar experience.

" Dumb question, but how do you get the extended warranty? "
Every new 360 has a 3 year warranty for the RRoD and E74 errors, otherwise it's just 1 year.

Ok just called them up, the 3 year warranty still applies even if the error is intermittent.  They were pretty direct about it too, actually answering the question the first time it was asked.

It looks like everything's good then.

" I don't think they can just charge you the repair fee without your consent. I'm pretty sure you'd have to opt-in, first. If the thing is legitimately red-ringing, considering how many consoles I'm sure they still receive every single day, I'm sure it won't be a problem. I've had two consoles die. One was fairly early on, where I had to call and go through the whole India-outsourced "try this... try that" crap. The second time, I could do everything through the site. I clicked through a few links and got a verification that they were sending out a console coffin. I'm not sure how the process works right now, since it's been a few months, but really, I don't think you'll have a problem. "

Yes this occurred to me as well.  It says on the website that if they charge you and you don't pay they'll just send it back unrepaired.  You've all pretty much convinced me that I should just go ahead and send it out and see what happens.  It'd be nice to know with certainty that it will go through with Microsoft but my only options there are to wait for them to answer my question or try to get my unit to produce the error 100% of the time when you turn it on.

" I'd just send it in. I've had about 4 RROD 360s they're pretty good about sending you a new one. Just make sure to make its last day special. Take it someplace fancy, and don't forget to tell it how you really feel. "
I would, but seeing as I just ordered a wii I'm not sure my words will ease the hurt anymore than Tiger's will.

Well I sent them an email asking for clarification on the matter, the first response I got was totally unhelpful but I replied anyway so maybe they'll actually answer the question this time around.  If this doesn't work I'll call and do battle with customer support.  Even if I don't get a straight answer from them about this (which I probably won't) I'll just act really pissed since that seems to have worked for other people.

After more testing it seems that what happens is that the system will power up fine on a cold boot, will crash in-game and then red ring when turned back on.  The problem is that it seems that simply leaving it off for awhile makes the RRoD go away so that it works on the next cold boot and the cycle repeats.

Mine is vertical and it just died.  That said, I still prefer vertical to horizontal.  My main concern is heat dissipation, and with the system vertical the bottom where the motherboard is located is exposed more so heat doesn't build up as much on the bottom of the unit.  I also think it looks better that way though to be honest the 360 isn't very attractive in either position.  Horizontal is probably safer for discs, I noticed recently that my ME disc appears to be scratched, but I'm not sure if this is from the 360 or not since the scratch is just in one part as opposed to the disc destroying circular gouges that result when they diode hits the disc.

The truth is that it shouldn't what way the console is oriented if Microsoft designed it to be placed both ways.  The fact that this topic is continually debated the way it is just evidence of the 360's horrible design when it really should come down to personal preference and nothing more.

I'm sure the banning of the live account is separate from the banning of a system.  I don't think signing into a banned xbox using a legit ID will ban the account as well, you just won't be able to get on live since the system is still banned.

You'd think gamestop would check for something like this, reselling a used console which essentially has all online functionality disabled is a blatant scam.  Given that this can happen, they should check that the console works and can get online before even buying it from the seller (and not buy the unit if it doesn't work).

Thanks for the feedback.  So far I've just done the online stuff, haven't called india just yet.  Since I still have time and since it'd probably take awhile to get back anyways (this has to happen right before winter break....) I'll keep messing around with it.  I haven't tried taking the drive off or clearing the cache, though I doubt either of these two things will help.

It's funny because I just ordered a wii a week ago, maybe my 360 committed suicide out of envy.
