Games I've played in 2009 (which probably were not released in 2009)

Catalog of the games I've played in '09  Console first, then PC, then downloadable.  Followed by lengthy comments about their significance to me.

List items

  • Still finishing this off Slowly working through to get as many Jiggies as possible before I finish it. Great characters, great level design (Banjoland! Easily one of my favorite levels of all time) and great music. I should add that this game is responsible for getting me re-interested in playing games again, so kudos to it for being pretty awesome.

  • So much fun... Too bad I haven't played it in a while. Need to throw it back in.

  • There was a time when I would play Soul Calibur II on GameCube for HOURS just learning moves and trying to go through that conquest mode. I even spent a decent amount of time with 3 back in college. So when I heard SC4 was going to be on sale for $10 at Best Buy, I said to myself "sure, why not". Too bad this one is easily one of the most underwhelming fighting games I've played. I can't put my finger on what's wrong with it either. It just doesn't feel right to me. Oh well.

  • I've been intrigued by this game ever since I first heard about it. After reading the extremely mixed reviews about it I decided to stop being interested in it. Then I played the demo. The art design, the way you moved the atmosphere just really sucked me in. So when I found it for $20 a couple weeks ago, I went for it. So far it's worth it. I can see where everyone's complaints can come from, but they just don't seem to matter to me. Just the exhilaration of running from whatever it is I'm running from is awesome enough for me. I will say, though, if it could benefit from one thing, it would be some sort of head tracking. Having to look in directions you aren't running can be a bit annoying without that technology.

  • Thanks endurance run, for making me go out and buy two long as crap RPGs. Fortunately, this one is quite good so far. And by quite good I mean, I really really really like it a lot. I didn't enjoy the story at first, but it's growing on me, as are the characters who I'm really getting to like. My only wish is that it was less grindy, because if I had one complaint about most RPGs (especially of J variety) it's that you have to fight with mediocre fighting mechanics far too often.

  • FUN!!!! Also need to dive back in to it. Hit a brick wall against Super Macho Man and haven't played it since.

  • I think I've tried to beat this game on 3 separate occasions. I definitely made it the farthest this time, thanks to finally learning and understanding how the combat works. Next time I go on a trip, definitely taking it with me and trying to polish it off.

  • I remember always being intrigued about this game when I was younger. Reading about it in Nintendo Power made it sound way cool. Of course I never found it at stores. Earlier this year, though I stumbled across it at the Play 'n Trade for like $8, so I grabbed it. Very interesting game. Yet another game I need to get back into.

  • Just been going through the campaign because it's been years since I've done it, and maybe by the time SC2 comes out I'll have finished it again. And gotten married. And had 3 kids. And be a grandparent.

  • OK, I'm just going to admit it. I HAVE NEVER PLAYED A HALF-LIFE GAME. Never seemed to interest me for whatever reason. Well, I finally started playing it last week (thanks to that ridiculously awesome sale on Steam a few weeks ago) and I honestly can't figure out why I thought it didn't look interesting. Valve truly are the masters of creating great atmosphere and telling stories without telling stories. My only gripe so far is the poor AI in those characters that can follow you around. That's pretty minor.

  • Left4Dead. Not a fan of zombie games. But for whatever reason, this just called to me. Probably because it's an awesome game. Also another case of Valve telling stories without telling stories.

  • Team Fortress is Team Fortress. Not much to say about this one.

  • CoD4 (PC, mind you... none of this XBox crap) is CoD4. Also not much to say about this.

  • Reinstalled it after seeing the announcement for the reboot of the Mechwarrior franchise. Too bad it's busted on modern computers. Got a couple older machines in the other room that I need to get running so I can play on there.

  • This is a result of the Bombcast crew talking about the Monkey Island remake (more on that later). They would often mention Day of The Tentacle on the show, and I'd say "well, I remember seeing that. That was Maniac Mansion 2... I remember playing Maniac Mansion on the NES... That was a weird game". That line of thought led to me doing some searches on the internets, which then led to me downloading a couple versions of Maniac Mansion. It had been so long since I played one that I couldn't remember any of the puzzles. Definitely a lot of fun, and it sparked a new interest in old adventure games. Also, I'd buy the crap out of a re-release.

  • Loom is the first of those I played through. While it was extremely short (and doesn't resolve much of anything), I found myself getting sucked into the universe and the characters. Definitely ranks among one of my favorite game experiences. So with this new found wind in my adventure game sails I moved on to...

  • This game... Another confession... I'VE NEVER PLAYED A MONKEY ISLAND GAME! Glad that's out of the way. I knew what Monkey Island was, I had seen screen shots of it and all that sort of thing, but never bother to play one. I had tried the demo on XBLA and decided that I didn't like it (mostly because of the controls, I think. Point and click just doesn't feel right on a controller). However, when it was on sale on Steam last weekend, I felt compelled to buy it. So I did. I'm not too far into it right now, but man. That's a funny game. I was sold when I talked to the dog the first time and he started going on and on and on. Had me in stitches. Expect to see more adventure games added to this list.

  • This has always been a game I wanted to try out. About a year and a half ago I got it and Multiwinia together. Multiwinia came first in the games I played, and I liked it quite a bit. I really appreciated the simplicity of how it took the basic concept of an RTS and pretty much boiled it down the the essence of the strategy genre. Out thinking your opponent. Anyways, I digress. Darwinia. A very unique experience to say the least. I've been playing it off and on for about a year now, and I'm determined to finish it at some point this year.

  • Castle Crashers. Fun old school beat 'em up action. It's too bad that the action doesn't scale when you don't have friends that play the game and have to play it single player all the time. It feels like they expressly designed to work with 2 or more players. Which, that's fine... but I play by myself.

  • I like UNO. It's a fun card game. To bad the people that made this version couldn't have made it more clear to us colorblind folk which color is Red and which is Green. But other than that. It's UNO.

  • iPhone game time! I tried the Peggle Deluxe demo on PC, and though it was pretty cool but not enough to spend money on it. So when they released it for iPhone and I had gift card money to burn, I decided to go for it. Turns out that was not a bad decision at all. It's a really good puzzle game complemented by some goofy characters and art design. Way to go PopCap

  • It's Katamari... For the iPhone. Don't think I need to say too much about this, except that I wish it was more Katamari for my iPhone.
