@haxdax: I don't think getting pushed over a ledge/into spikes is cheap. It's part of the game. If I get pushed off of a ledge then it's my fault for losing control of my positioning, forgetting to dodge, or getting guard broken. I just need to remember to keep away from environmental dangers. This is further emphasized if I'm fighting characters who can control your positioning if they get the upper hand: heroes like Raider, Shugoki, Lawbringer, Conqueror and Valkyrie have ways of getting their opponents into environmental hazards. This goes for the Lawbringer especially- right now, his neutral game is kind of awful and has to rely on environmental dangers or side heavies after his shove to kill a decent opponent. The good news is that a lot of this can be dodged or require them to put their opponents in a certain state. Conqueror and Valkyrie's shield bashes, Raider's charging carry, and Lawbringer's shove all can be dodged. Shugoki needs a guard break to do his golf swing or landing a light or heavy to headbutt. It feels cheap because I'm not expecting it, but as I play more and learn I'll be far less likely to fall for it.

Moving game chat into an optional party system has given the inmates the keys to the asylum. Plenty of "normal" people play online games and chat, but they just separate themselves from those who would rather have anonymity and an audience with little to no repercussions for their actions.

Add in things like people listening to music or loud conversations in the background, and most well-mannered gamers don't want anything to do with open chat anymore, myself included.

Having a private party system for voice chat is fantastic. My friends and I can have a good time talking about the game and things outside of it without some random asshole telling us to shut the fuck up. If I'm by myself I don't even use a mic and just mute everyone else: everybody with helpful info are likely in parties and the people in the open channel with mics are usually total assholes.

I don't know what the most hated game is, but judging from events over the past decade it must assuredly be a science-fiction-themed game that allegedly didn't deliver on its promises.

Back when I used to buy physical game copies of PC games all the time the game with the most discs I had was World of Warcraft had like 4 CD's when I tried to get into it around when Burning Crusade launched. Can't deal with having physical game copies taking up space anymore, so I just buy digital now.

I'm having fun with it so far. Some of the later levels and high-level training tower stuff takes a load of stamina so gameplay is only like a couple of instances and that's fine considering I only play for minutes at a time anyway. Other than that, it's a way to get a quick Fire Emblem fix on a small map start to finish without having to carry around my 3DS.

Had a local movie rental place that my family constantly rented from. On average my parents let me and my siblings rent a game on average around once a week and they had five day rentals. It had a lot of lesser-known Genesis stuff like Alisia Dragoon, Cyborg Justice, and Galahad (or Leander if you're familiar with the Amiga version). The SNES had a bigger section and some of the lesser-known stuff included Run Saber, Equinox, Obitus, and Phantom 2040. I think I remember us renting a TurboGrafx-16 with Bravoman and Silent Debuggers. At one point it even had a coffee shop and a pizza place in it. Once larger franchises like Blockbuster and Hollywood moved into its territory it eventually went under.

Also remember renting the SNES version of Drakkhen from there. Fuck that game.

Got in through an invite from a friend on Xbox One. Some thoughts:

  • Game runs at or slightly less than 30 FPS. In the 4v4 game mode it turned into a slideshow in a handful of cases. It's a beta, so I hope it gets ironed out at or around launch.
  • The 4v4 mode is pretty fun. The creeps are there largely as a mechanic for the middle point: in order to capture it, you have to push your creep wave towards the enemy side of the point. The other two points are for healing and backcapping.
  • There are nuances to every hero that make them unique. For example, the knight shield class has an infinite (stamina permitting) with lights and focuses on using the heavy charge up, but can't feint like most other heroes can. To contrast, the viking two-handed is all about stunning your enemy and relocating them using throws, being able to literally carry them to a wall for a stun or throw them off a ledge. Thankfully, almost all of the subtle nuances are detailed in "how to" videos for each hero, along with their movesets.
  • I don't know if it was explained anywhere, but if you guard break at or quickly after the enemy does theirs, you'll prevent it from happening like a throw tech in fighting games.
  • Duels are pretty fun. It uses small sections from larger maps and rotates through three sections. Includes environmental hazards like ledges and fire to put enemies into.

Man oh man they put a lot of thought into Xenogears, even beyond what they show in the game. The Xenogears Perfect Works book has a ridiculous amount of fluff, going into great detail about a lot of things in the game. And the game goes well enough into detail about the world and characters on its own.
