Raul_Atreides: Best of 2010

List items

  • Best game this year, held back only by EA's misguided idea to withold content for 6 months with the VIP packs. Sound design is amazing, far better than anything else in video games(except maybe Dead Space). Distant explosions and echoing gun reports lent the game some weight. I frequently played it just to hear the sound, but it helped that the gameplay was so great too.

  • This is the most unique and ambitious FPS title i've played. It should get more credit than it does for doing something different(and doing it mostly well). The size of the battlefield is not what is impressive, it is the layered objective structure, the chain of command interface, and the MMO-like skill trees and equipment stores. The simultaneous 3-faction fighting, the faction metagame, the myriad ways to take objectives, and the unflagging developer support all are great seed ideas for the shooters of the future.

  • This game should not look this good or be this fun for how open it is. The only problem is how punitive the military alert system is, it basically punishes you(very quickly and very harshly) for having fun. Otherwise, using the hook, vehicles and weapons are great fun and rewarding in their own right.

  • Truly delivered on what AC2 promised. Gameplay systems were fleshed out and provided real depth, rather than the illusion of depth of the previous game's various systems.

  • Fixes a lot of the cheapness of Modern Warfare 2 while also having a more interesting setting(to me) and a plot that is slightly less insane. Basically, it makes MW2 obsolete.

  • This was a solid FPS campy science fiction cold war experience. It felt like a Bioshock mod at times, but I mean that in the best sense.

  • The fact that this game has the most unique and engaging RPG battle system I've played along with some of the worst story and character design are clues that let me know I'm playing a tri-Ace game. The battles, customization, and other gameplay ideas make it great.

  • Feels cheap(low-budget), but has a lot of heart, and is eminently weird. As a huge fan of Cavia's previous work, Drakengard, I knew this game would fit me well.

  • Overall, I appreciated what this game was trying to do: be a streamlined RPG for those of us who complain about not having 80 hours to play and who get lost when picking a game up again after not playing for weeks. The battle system is inspired, but is basically the only thing to do in the game(no minigames, minimal party management, no exploration until the end). Even the story was pretty decent: an interesting character story/road story. Until Chapter 9, at which point it quickly detours into vague metaphysical incomprehensibility.

  • I am the one person who enjoyed this game much more than the original. The story was more emotional, felt more real, and didn't rely on a big twist to impress itself upon the player. Gameplay felt tighter in every way, whereas the actual "game" part of the first consisted of unbroken tedium.
