Characters That I Love

These are my all-time favorite video game characters excluding those who originated outside of games (sorry Vin Diesel).

List items

  • Clive Barker's Jericho - With her telekinetic abilities Black is able to control the trajectory of her sniper rounds mid-flight and is also equipped with an underslung grenade launcher to blast targets out of existence at close range. This loadout makes her the Jericho squad member I find the most fun to "inhabit", and I also think she has the most interesting personality of the group. She's tough as nails and seems to have somewhat of a lone wolf mentality but has a vulnerability that shows through on occasion. She's a well-rounded character with extremely fun to use abilities and an awesome look. I can't get enough of her.

  • Mortal Kombat (series) - As a kid obsessed with Terminator and Cable from X-Men, any character with cybernetic body parts was pretty much my favorite by default. Kano became even more of a favorite when he was awesomely brought to life (and killed in such a memorable way) on the big-screen. When I stopped sucking completely at fighting games and learned to use his moves in the PS2 MK's, I got a whole new level of enjoyment out of the character. Now it feels great to kick ass with him in MK9; the culmination of years of Kano appreciation.

  • Resident Evil 4 - A ruthless mercenary who favors the use of a compound bow before growing a giant mutated blade arm, Krauser covers the complete spectrum of badass. He's by far my favorite playable character in RE4's Mercenaries mode and is responsible for several of my favorite boss battles of all time.

  • Max Payne (series) - No video game character has delivered more original memorable lines than Max Payne. A hopeless romantic seemingly doomed to slow-mo kill endless thugs for eternity while everyone he gets close to dies; Max is the ultimate tragic hero and few things are as pleasing as hearing him narrate that tragedy in the series' trademark film noir style.

  • Condemned 2: Bloodshot - Specifically Ethan Thomas from Condemned 2, who is a completely different character than in the original. This Ethan Thomas takes "grizzled" to a new level. When we first meet him he's crushing painkillers into a shot of whiskey with his index-fingerless hand. I love his physical redesign, new voice, and attitude. I can't think of a more suitable looking candidate to beat thousands of homeless people to death with crude makeshift fighting implements. The interactive sequence that has you literally overcome Thomas' demons was a really neat way of putting the player in direct control of the character's growth. And unlike most, I kind of liked the other character-defining twist toward the end of the game. I wanna get one of those target practice shirts.

  • Quake III Arena - My go-to character in Quake III. I was initially drawn to Gorre because he has red hair like me and his armor glows orange. And I haven't looked back since...

  • Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City - Yes, Lupo! I know she's a new character and maybe it's that her badass spec ops demeanor reminded me of Abigail Black, or that she wears that cool blue LED mask, or her powerful in-game abilities, no--it's that voice! One of the most distinctly awesome voices I've ever heard in a game, it really sets a tone for the whole gameplay experience and makes this character we know very little about feel more three-dimensional than some who've starred in their own decade-spanning series'.
