  • Clive Barker's Jericho is one of my favorite games. It's difficult to explain that to people because it doesn't do anything technically amazing and plays pretty much like a less scary Doom 3. Actually, it's kind of like the Clive Barker-skinned "Aliens" to Doom 3's "Alien"--and okay, that perfectly sums up why I love it. For most, that style of corridor crawling run & gun action was too dated in 2007, but for me it's the essence of the genre and never gets old. "Clive Barker-skinned" is a funny way to put it because the environments are just carpeted in gore. If you've ever read the opening WWII scene in "The Damnation Game", this damn awesome game (thank you) brings that horror to life. In an action setting like this much of its impact is lost, but it still makes for a great and uniquely Barker atmosphere. The nasty, mostly castrated, creature designs are essentially an expansion of his "Tortured Souls" creations, and become even more grotesque after unlocking their Barker-penned backstories. The story, while told in a cheesy manner at times, is really cool and unique and it gets more interesting the more you think about it. The Jericho Squad can occassionally come across cheesy as well, but they're some of my favorite characters ever. The squad mechanic is often criticized for lacking strategy and just adding the chore of reviving squadmates, but I really just see it as a way to swap between all these great characters on the fly which is a lot of fun; and reviving never really bugged me. The characters' unique weapons & abilities are a joy to use, their personalities are well defined and often comical, and the game really leaves you wanting to experience another journey with them. But as much as I pester Codemasters, I don't think it's gonna happen. :p
