Rockstar Games: What Happens Now?

Rockstar Games: Fuckin' Shit Up Since '98

 and this,
 And this,
 and this,

 and this,

And thats awesome, yep. Skydiving, explosions, stopping traffic because you saw another lime green bikini that needed some bloody accents, and...whoa, what the fuck is happening to that cops head in that one picture?
Anyway, GTA IV comes out and some people go "WHERE THE FUCK IS MY SKYDIVING INTO A STRIPCLUB AND STEALING BICYCLES AND GIVING THE FINGER AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH ITS TOO REAL"
Most people just had their heads explode, because of how good the game was. You really felt for Niko Bellic and his European ass. I knew people who were literally emotionally effected after the cab service was burnt; after Kate was shot, etc etc etc. The consensus between me and my friends is something along the lines of; Well that was awesome, but what the fuck is R* doing after that?
The answer was especially awesome to me since I loved Red Dead Revolver, a game most people overlooked for whatever reason. The only hidden gem Rockstar ever made, I suppose.

The fact that they would even have the balls to make a sequel to a relatively quiet and meh-received PS2 game was pretty nerd-cool. The thing that nobody saw coming was how good Red Dead Redemption really was. One of my favorite storylines in any game ever, MGS3 included. While John Marston wasn't unforgettable, Red Dead Redemption is an ensemble effort from the Heroin addicted Professor on leave, to Dutch, to Bonnie Macfarlane, to Irish, to you get the goddamn idea. The landscape was beautiful, story was great, gunplay was as good as ever, horse-riding was fun, and the only big problem I have with the game is that you have to join free roam to get to any other multiplayer game mode. But, the game was more or less GTA IV with all the kinks worked out, and set to a different drumbeat. Some tweaks for the engine and a whole facelift for the story change.

Now, LA Noire.

Looks awesome, like it might be my favorite game of the year already. But again, it kinda looks like another Rockstar game with some touches to make it better. Now whatever affiliation Rockstar actually has with this project I don't fully understand, but people seem to get bitchy whenever you say Noire is a Rockstar Game. Watch the trailers that show driving and gunplay. Does that look different to you? As far as i'm concerned its a collaborative effort that will basically just be GTA/Red Dead revisited in a different era, with different story mechanics IE detective work. Being said, it looks great. But what happens after LA Noire? GTA V? Will that be more of what we saw? I'm not complaining because R* makes awesome games, but where are they going? Are they just going to venture off into Max Payne 3 and then come back to the next GTA or Red Dead later?

Here's another good question to ask:

Where the FUCK is Agent? Ah gee, it sounds awesome guys. Really, it sounds like a game i'd pre-order and I fucking hate pre-ordering anything. But how come nothings been said about it in years? No screens, no announcements, no cancellation announcement even. Is this bastard in the works, or what?

My question to the GB community is, where do you see Rockstar heading next?

Sorry guys, something went wrong and their should be some text at the top before the San Andreas and Vice City pics. The blog still makes sense, so forget it. Sorry//

They should release another game for The Warriors.

I've been a fan of Rockstar from their GTA on PC days, but I always try to keep my expectations in check whenever they release a new game. I heard a lot of people being disappointed with GTA IV, but I only got the chance to play it a year after it came out, and I definitely liked it. It was more serious than its predecessors, but it still had a great story, a living open world city, and loads of cars. Like with many new games, if you keep your expectations at a certain level, you'll still enjoy the game without feeling disappointed at all (see: GT5, Alan Wake, etc.)

But to answer your question, I see Rockstar still doing what they've always been doing: sandbox games. There definitely will be a "GTA V" after Max Payne 3 and Agent. This will be cemented by how they'll realise Max Payne 3 was a mistake, that is, if it doesn't keep that noir style the franchise is best known for. So far it looks like they're setting it in tropical and sunny Brazil, and they've gone and made Max a generic shaved look like almost every other protagonist this gen.

Long story short: most R* games are open world games, that's what they've always been good at and that's what they'll always do. Oh, and there'll be a Rockstar presents Table Tennis 2.

GTA 5

This is an obvious answer but I would argue that GTA5 will be the hardest game to make in video game history. Curious to see if they can handle the expectation.

I've grown bored of the GTA games, what I'm looking forward to now is L.A. Noire because it really looks awesome. It'll will be interesting to see what Rockstar plans when it comes to GTA5 'cause they really have some great expectations to fill. Hopefully they'll do something special, haven't been too happy 'bout the last GTA games.

Agent got canned, didn't it?

I agree, though. GTA5 will be their next major announcement.

Wasn't a big fan of 4, but I've always enjoyed their releases otherwise. Keen.

" @GetEveryone: I think that was The Agency. "

Ah! Cheers, dude.

I always seem to misremember that sort of thing.

GTA IV, RDR and LA Noire do have a lot common in gameplay terms, but they're so different in setting and vibe that they all feel distinct. Max Payne 3 is going to be interesting considering Rockstar hasn't done a straight linear action game in ages. You can forgive some slightly wonky mechanics in an open world game, but this is going to require them to really nail movement and shooting.

I think Agent was announced prematurely, and that it was still really early in developement. Sony just wanted another bullet-point in their conference to get excited about. We'll hear more about that soon I think.

From the supposed casting call for GTA V it seems it will take place in contemporary San Andreas, more specifically Los Santos if the rumours are to be believed. I'm sure the gameplay will largely be the same kind of drive-here-shoot-dudes-have-a-car-chase style of missions, but Rockstar are so goddamn good at storytelling that I really don't mind.

L.A. Noire isn't made by Rockstar, seems a common error on here

@GetEveryone: It's easy to mistake one for the other :)

I liked GTA4's story more than Red Dead's. I would kind of like to see them keep the deeper story from GTA4 but bring in more of the over-the-top sand box stuff.

I think it would be cool if they brought in more RPG elements like being able to talk to more random people on the street and skills and leveling.

Or a pirate game. With a big ass Just Cause 2 sized world where you can crew and sail your own ship.

@Ygg: It's a weird thing. Team Bondi is writing and designing LA Noire, but it's produced and published by Rockstar and it's using their engine. I wouldn't say Rockstar made LA Noire, but I would say it's a Rockstar game. It has that flavour.

Dude, yes.

I expect GTAV to be coming out for the next generation of consoles. I can't imagine the necessary leap being made on the current generation.

Good read, but i have nothing to add to what people posted..

they're releasing L.A. Noire which is going to be a smash hit (GTA IV with you on the other side of the law). then Max Payne 3 which will be a financial success and a great game but wont have enough of the old games' vibe to be considered a true sequel by hardcore fans. then Agent, probably wont sell as well as other R* titles because it's a PS3 exclusive, and in 2-3 years we're getting GTA V on next gen consoles, and it's going to blow us away because Rockstar Games do not know failure <3

Team Bondi has become more or less a Rockstar studio that doesnt have "R*" in its name just yet.. they're using R* technology and resources, they're as good as bought (if R* havent bought em yet)

That's cool and makes sense, I mean it already looks very Rockstar as it is. That damn mini-map.

Someone change the page from Team Bondi to R* Bondi. We can say we were ahead of the curve.

I'm sure Rockstar will continue to make awesome games, but they need to step up there game when it comes to the next GTA game.

I don't really like Rockstar games, to be honest. I didn't enjoy GTAIV at all.

This I 100% agree with. The Warriors was one of the best games I ever played.

It also helped that I am a rabid Warriors fan.

Did you play Redemption?
Posted by Claude

I wish they would make another game like Space Station Silicon Valley. It was a puzzle, platform hybrid and I really enjoyed it. They were known as DMA design back then.

Posted by MooseyMcMan

A new GTA game with the decent shooting controls of RDR would be pretty awesome.

Also, no run button. Every time I play a RockStar game (well, really just GTAIV and RDR at this point) there's a damn run button, AND IT HAUNTS ME THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRETY OF THE GAME! I hate it.

And the worst part is that if you go and play the games online, the default movement speed is running! They're just laughing at us! There's been no need for run buttons since the invention of the analog stick. You know, back in the 90s when the N64 had them, and then the PS1 started having them.

I will buy anything they make. That is all.

Red Dead Revolver was bought up by Rockstar, from Capcom.
Remnants of Capcom's original development can be seen overseas, as they still published the game in their native Japan. For a short period Capcom had canceled the game, alongside Dead Phoenix for the Gamecube.

Very strange origins for the Red Dead franchise.

But, the game was more or less GTA IV with all the kinks worked out, and set to a different drumbeat. Some tweaks for the engine and a whole facelift for the story change.

I understand what you're getting at, but I'm not 100% down with this statement.
Open-world mission based gameplay, that resides in a sandbox shouldn't immediately equate to GTA. It's easy to make that comparison, but Red Dead Redemption is very much so it's own beast. There are similarities from a very low base design level, but once you start making individual mechanic comparisons, you start running into some pretty dramatic differences that alters even the most identical aspects of that base design.

Another little nit-pick here: The Rage engine went through more than just a few "tweaks". Everything from enemy and NPC reactions were entirely redone, not to mention the giant elephant in the room: Streamlining the development of large rural locations, which goes beyond just changing art assets.

i need to play red dead redemption and see what all the fuss is about. the ending was spoiled for me, so i don't know how much that will affect my play through.

I didn't know Capcom originally started Revolver, thats actually really cool. Surprising a Japanese developer would make a game set in the old west and have it turn out so good. From whatever they started, anyway. And I get what you're saying, obviously major changes are required to make a game feel like a new IP, but you can see and feel the similarity, the same similarity that LA Noire will evidently have.

I hope to see Rockstar head to their doom for ignoring the PC.

Then I hope to see their best employees regroup and restart with better ideas behind them.
