My thoughts regarding the Whiskey Survey

I originally posted this on the news article but I thought I'd share it as blog post too:

First of all I thought it was very fitting that Anime Vice wasn't even listed as a site in the survey, that says it all. Just axe the site and do something else with the hosting space.

I also feel Whiskey Media as a whole has felt forced into providing content because they now have paying customers, a lot of humour has felt forced recently and a lot of content has felt like a lot less enthusiasm went into it than say... before there was premium memberships. I understand you guys have been working your asses off to provide us with great content, and it is great content, but it feels like you don't much enjoy a lot of the things you're doing for us. Quick Looks are one area I've noticed what seems like a lack of enthusiasm, whereas 18 months ago terrible games played in Quick Looks just made for extra humour, now it just feels as if everyone is thinking "Urgh".

Happy Hours have also gotten pretty stale and I think you're aware of this, doing them every week, in the same format has gotten pretty boring for us and it seems you guys are bored of it too. One a month would be great, as long as you can be excited for it, if you're not totally hyped for providing content, just do something new. I'd rather you guys mixed it up and enjoyed it yourselves, than forcing something you'd rather not do.

Which brings me on to Endurance Runs... I'm pretty much sick of hearing "Endurance Run" now, as if it was an annual thing in the first place? Just because it was done 2 years in a row doesn't mean it should happen every year. As Jeff has said before, he can't even say "if the right game comes along" anymore because people just spam him suggestions on what he should play. If a game does come along that you want to make an Endurance Run out of then great, if not, please don't just force yourselves to play through a game to please the fan base. It would be so obvious and not very fun to watch.

That's as honest as I can be, right now, I'm not sure I'll resubscribe until I feel you guys are a bit more enthusiastic about the content you're providing, plus £50 is a lot of money if I'm uncertain about things. So there's my 2 pence worth. Feel free to let me know what you think...

P.S:

No more black "meme" logo T-shirts. Please.

Although I don't watch a lot of Quick Looks, I can probably offer a reason for why they suck: the games suck for Quick Looks. I know that sounds like a crap response, but there really are a ton of mediocre/average games where all you can say is, "Yea, it's there, alright."

I agree, and in those cases they should just not bother.

Well, you can't know that it's that type of game until you've played it, and while I don't know their video recording policies, they may be saying, "Well, we recorded this Quick Look..."

That's true I have noticed a lack of enthusiasm as of late, I miss the old videos of when they did random shit around the office. I guess they just want to leave that stuff to the interns. Still these guys are smart and I'm sure they'll come up with something to make it worth paying the $50 subscription.

Posted by Creamypies

There has been a real lack in enthusiasm from the team lately, I'll give you that. And as far as the Happy Hour is concerned, I tend to wait for the archived version and skip through the bits I don't care about.

I love this site, and I love the personalities across Whiskey... but it seems like the best content from the past two or three weeks has been made by the interns.

Not that that's a problem so to speak, good for the interns for pumping out great video content on their blogs. But when I'm beginning to look forward to the next episode of the Fear Gauntlet more than anything else on this site... that's a problem. Again, that's not me implying that the Fear Gauntlet is bad... but the staff as Whiskey should not be outclassed by its interns. And that's exactly what is happening.

The Fear Gauntlet is, in fact, a fantastic idea. Which leads me to the question... why wasn't this already a thing? Why does it take a group of interns, with little to no experience of producing web based content, to create a series like this? We want, and we need more unique content, Whiskey... and we need it soon.

I agree with you on every single point, all of this is exactly the thoughts I've been having. Just feels like everything has become more of a job and less of a hobby, If that makes sense.

I will however keep subscribing

You know what I love about the Happy Hour? It bridges the gap between the sites for people who don't go to said site and get a bit of info from each. I rather like it but there's nothing wrong with coming up with a new formula now and again.

I don't see how they're getting "tired" because it's all based on the games. This year was some great moments in QL still and I happily go back to those moments on YouTube and watch them again and again. I think everyone knows about that big dark ER cloud in the sky but it's something they feel confident holding off for a long time unless a game comes along that's perfect for it. I guess what I"m saying is that approaching the staff with these complaints they would look at you and be kind of confused. No one can truly speak for them but I have a feeling they still enjoy what they do. Granted they have a lot of stuff to worry about with September coming up and now letting interns do dumb random shit around the office.

Advert revenues are in the toilet so I wonder how enthusiastic they would be if they didn't have subscribers bringing some revenue in.

I disagree across the board, except for the part about black meme tshirts. No problem with meme tshirts, but stop making them only in black. We're not all fashion-devoid gamer shut ins who only wear black.

They don't have to force anything, but they should do another one, yes. ERs are a huge part of why a ton of people subscribed. It's quite literally what the people want. They can't justify it cost-wise sometimes, but I think they underestimate how many people give $50 based on video content like the ERs existing. They should find a way to do one. Either way, I'm fine.

@Rolyatkcinmai: Thing is Jeff said they really don't want to do another one, and I think they shouldn't have to just to please people because it would feel forced, they wouldn't enjoy it and it would come across in the videos. If they find something and want to do it, then great, if not, then that's fine too. At least, in my opinion.

Jeff doesn't want to do it because they haven't found the right game and it takes three people away from doing other things for 30 to 60 minutes per day. Again, I'm not saying force it. But if they find the right game, they should not let man-hours be the thing stopping them. They should remember that a significant amount of their subscriber based funding is directly a result of the ERs.

I'm one of those people who would have absolutely no qualms with a $250/year Whiskey Media platinum subscription. $50 is absolutely nothing for the amount I get out of them in a year.

Naw I don't have a problem with the memes or the logo, I just want better style and not just black with image stuck in the middle. Like BrokenTier t-shirts that I am not just wearing because I bought them to support Giant Bomb but something that looks awesome choose nice colours and use all of the shirt. PLENTY of users have fantastic artistic talent on Giant Bomb. Let them design shirts.

I would definitely be more interesting in more of the fun around the office bits and unique series like the Fear Gauntlet (Spook Look) becoming a regular occurence on the site.

That said, I find that I still tend to enjoy most of the Quick Looks overall. I just wish they would pay more attention to the games themselves (for example, skipping through all of the plot/dialogue in today's E.Y.E.: Divine Cybermancy Quick Look and then Brad saying he "wasn't paying attention" when Vinny asked him what their goal was) and consider the fact that many of us use those video as demos. I would like to see all the aspects of the game including bits of cinematics, story, etc.

Yeah I see your point and I agree if they do find the game they should definitely not let "man hours" stop them, but they've definitely got to want it.

I'd also say more people signed up just to support some cool guys.

Regardless of whether this is the "Whiskey" of old, this site is still more entertaining than any other games site on the net. It seems unfair to demand "new features!!!1!" when they're already offering QL's, TNTs and a quality podcast over most other games sites.

@Creamypies: As for this,

The Fear Gauntlet is, in fact, a fantastic idea. Which leads me to the question... why wasn't this already a thing? Why does it take a group of interns, with little to no experience of producing web based content, to create a series like this? We want, and we need more unique content, Whiskey... and we need it soon.

We're talking about roughly seven or eight people who've been running a games website for a little over three years. This is including Alex, Patrick, Dave, and Drew, one of whom has gone (and also worked for Screened) and another of whom has just arrived. Eight people is not a lot of people to come up with new ideas all the time. Therefore, it's not surprising that the interns, who are entirely fresh at this and have yet to express themselves in web content form at all, are indeed coming up with such fresh ideas. For example, a friend and I created a tabletop game based on Fate/stay Night. It took four years before someone new came in and said "well, why do you need Lancer as a class if you can never make interesting Lancers? Clearly that's a poorly defined class and you should just create something different to replace it. How about Leader?"

Fresh perspectives provide fresh content. For example, if I were an intern there, my new video content would probably be based on the "Endurance Run" format and be focused on tearing apart old games that people revere. My first three, of course, would be The Ocarina of Time (a game I'm almost finished with for the first time since youth,) Metal Gear Solid 4 (a game I'm playing with a friend right now) and Resident Evil 4 (one of my favorite games of all time.)

Agreed- I definitely value quality over quantity. too I love the crew but have been dying to find a reason to subscribe.
At the same I say quality over quantity, I'd be interested to see some insider stuff, like pre-show and post-show action to see the dudes' off camera personas. Maybe a video blog or something showing stuff behind the scenes. Or somebody documenting them, for example their trip to E3 would show the journey, the set up, the downtime, the breaks in the podcasts, the trip to the rippers etc. all edited into a tidy, 1hr, entertaining package.

Posted by Baal_Sagoth

Honestly, the last thing I want out of Giantbomb is for them to fall into the same silly trap almost every gaming site does and only focus on the mainstream shit I already see everywhere else. The obscure stuff, the old games - that is why I'm here other than the outstanding personalities of the staff and the nice community.

You seem to dislike all the more original and unique stuff on here which is fine if you don't enjoy it but why are you here in the first place? "Serious" and forced "professional" content is all over the gaming sites. Do you really want to become GB like that?

I basically haven't watched any content provided by the site in near enough 6 months now. Their seemed to be a strange vibe in a ton of the content, and I didn't want to partake.

Just to reiterate what you said, they shouldn't feel objiged to make content for content's sake.

'High-jinx round the office' vids were great because they felt natural, and unforced.

Posted by RockinKemosabe

I would honestly love to see more quick look throwbacks or something along the lines of Screened's Besties feature. It's all too common to hear the GB crew rag on a game for being shitty and going into great detail about but when it comes to really great memorable games they don't really delve into it. Like watching some of the TNTs where they're playing they talk about what they loved about the game in the first place. It just has to be like 10 or 15 minutes long of a quick look and just explain why they love the game in the first place. Doesn't have to be a weekly thing, just in regular intervals when they're not bogged down with assignments.

And honestly, they should revamp the trivia system, cause who still plays the trivia game?

Edited by MattBosten

Agree to an extent on the QLs, I'd like to see them keep mixing the teams doing QLs up and featuring people outside the core 4 like Patrick and Dave more. I hope they keep doing more throw back QLs as they're often far more entertaining than upcoming releases the team just aren't interested in. The content that's really improved recently is the stuff coming from the interns; I enjoy Betting the Farmville and the Fear Gauntlet and Metagame are both entertaining.

Also, don't ask me to pass judgement on the other sites. My knowledge of the other sites extends to 'Sara is totally dreamy and she should marry me' and 'I really don't want Anime Vice to ever show up on a CRB check'. That's it, I don't know whether they're doing a good job or bad job. The pressure of answering that question on the survey was so intense that I just clicked everything.

My advice for Giant Bomb would be to stop being so inward-looking in general, and for the staff to play more games outside of their wheelhouse. a) It's a job (and a pretty cushy one at that don't forget) so suck it up, and b) it helps keep things fresh for us and yourselves. eg. Ryan taking a run at Civ and loving it -instead of just dismissing it out of hand- was great. A genuine passion for gaming, just for its own sake, should be a prerequisite of this job, and sometimes (too often) that passion does seem to be MIA.

What I don't get is, during the summer they aren't sitting around playing game after game after game because it's not October and 3 new games come out every week. They have time, Jeff literally claims to not have played anything 3 weeks in a row. This would be the perfect time to come up with something fun like what the interns are doing.

The quicklooks have been un-enthusiastic as of late I'll admit, but the ones with Vinny and Patrick have still been great, they're still as enthusiastic as ever. And the podcasts, they've been giving Tested.com a run for their money.

I think the site just became more professional, I remember the days of pure fun in the old office... Those where the golden days. I´m just happy with them making content that makes THEM happy. I agree, the happy hours look forced and the other content is not as entertaining as it used to be. The best moments are when the GB crew seems to be having fun. Remember the Age of booty video?! I couldn't agree more with the OP and it's one of the major factors when I decided to fight the good fight in order to get a refund when they tried to weasel advertisments into the member's section.

I pretty much agree with everything that has been said here. TNTs have gotten stale, the Happy Hour is boring, and the non-live content has been almost exclusively Quick Looks for several months now. The recent Farmville videos have been pretty good, and more features like this would really help.

Posted by SquadBroken

For me, this is the pinacle of Whiskey Media content and I wish they would do more random stupid stuff like this.

Posted by Gamer_152

Firstly, I'm fine with the black meme shirts but then again I like darker clothing, and while the obvious lack of content on Anime Vice is apparent, the site still seems to have somewhat of a dedicated community so I don't think they should necessarily just pull the plug on that one. As for the content on Giant Bomb I agree that they do seem to feel a greater obligation to the community now that they have paying customers and I do agree that while I still enjoy the content that this site puts out, there's been a steady drop in the quality of the quick looks and Happy Hours over the life time of the site, although I must admit I haven't seen a subsciber-only Happy Hour in a month or two and on the quick look front we must take into account that right now there aren't a ton of big games coming out for them to get excited about.

That being said, I can't say for certain that the reason for this decline in quality has been because of the introduction of the subscriptions, it seems just as plausible to me that after so many quick looks and Happy Hours, the guys are just getting a little burned out. As for the Endurance Run I think that's a seperate issue from everything else and I'm glad that talk from the community of a new Endurance Run has generally died down. At this point I just hope it stays quiet; we know by now that if a new ER happens then it happens, but trying to nudge the guys into doing it is just going to make them less likely to do one. If there does happen to be any Whiskey staff out there reading this then I hope this thread doesn't dampen your spirits too much, you guys are still awesome.

I think you guys might be reading too much into how the crew acts with the content that they put up.  But, lets say the guys are a little tired and the enthusiasm isn't there for Quick Looks every single time one is posted.  They can't be perfect every time.  Plus, this is the summer when a lot of 'ok' to bad games are released.  Do they have to be ecstatic every time they do a video for every 'ok' game?  I haven't noticed a degradation in quality of any of the content on the site.  Just like before, when there wasn't a bad membership, I like most, but not all, of the Quick Looks, Bombcasts, TNT's, and Happy Hours (when they are free).  Try not to read too much into the psyches of the people on the Whiskey Media sites.  Just be happy with what you like and don't take part in what you don't like.

I assume this survey is some subscriber only "Did you get your money's worth" kind of deal?

The site is worse then it was just a year ago, and I think one of the reasons is because we are in most the boring part of the games cycle. And I'm not talking Q4 baloney, although that's a contributing factor. Great games are still coming out, but it's a known quantity at this point. We've had these consoles for 6 years now and games have a certain staleness to them the moment they're put out. It's hard to get excited about this whole thing.

Besides that, they've settled down too much. They're content is too minutely scheduled, just quicklooking every game that comes out, TNT thursdays, and HH fridays. It's pretty messed up when the interns are producing more and better content then the staff. They're making efforts though, their farmville thing isn't great but I enjoy it nonetheless simply because it's something new. I get the feeling that they know they're stagnating and are fixing it.
