2000 was a year that really opened the door to casual playing of video games. Pokémon had started this process, but The Sims was quite possibly one of the biggest gateway games for non-games, including a large portion of girls, who finally "got" what video games were all about.

Then you had the game for the "hardcore" super serious gamers with Diablo 2. The game for the "cool kids" on the playground - Tony Hawk 2. The game for the JRPG nerd (FF 9), the Sega/JRPG nerd (Skies of Arcadia), the Japanophile (Jet Grind Radio), the fighter game aficionado (MvC2), the CRPG nerd (Baldur's 2), the "bros" (NFL 2K1 and Madden NFL 2001), the Nintendo shill (Majora's Mask), and the gamer desperate for humor (NOLF 1). In short, there was something for everyone, with genres as broad as they potentially will ever be.
