I think the solution seems very simple. If you hate the aesthetics of the game, the suppression mechanic and the idea of occlusion of information due to things other than solid objects, then this isn't the game for you. If you have such a strong dislike for so many, arguably integral components of the game, surely there's something better out there for you. To me, removing those things from BF3 would be like removing the cover system from Gears of War. I understand that some people prefer less avatar importance and more direct control in their games, but that's why we still have games like Quake (and I guess Modern Warfare, right?). Battlefield 3 is, unfortunately for you, not that kind of game. Increased avatar importance is nothing but positive to me, I think more games need a lot more than that. If my avatar can freak out because someone's shooting at him, or be blinded because of the in-world sun or a flashlight in his face, then yeah, maybe I'll be frustrated because he's not doing what I want to do and not acting on the information I, personally, have access to. But in the end, I think it makes the world feel so much more real, if not to me, then to the digital creature I'm in control of, and that automatically serves to immerse me so much more.

Then there's the issue of aesthetics. Yeah, BF3 actually looks pretty bad in some spots, when their weird contrast filters manage to clash to make a particular rock look both blown out and too dark at the same time, but I think the general look of the game is great and very characteristic. Looking at pictures side by side, the levels of washed out blueness do end up looking a bit ridiculous, but if you still notice that after more than five minutes of actually playing the game, you're paying attention to the wrong things. And whoever thinks Metro and Death Valley look better without the color filter has no right to criticize the game's art style because they clearly have no idea how aesthetics work at all.

Now I may not be a long time Battlefield fan, I only played a bit of 2, sunk 150-ish hours into 2142 and another dozen into Play 4 Free before I could finally get BF3... But I love what this game brought to the table. Including the blue. It makes it look distinct, easier to tell apart from the other billion modern shooters that for some reason keep coming out as if they have any chance at competing with the established giants of the genre. The only things I don't like are the questionable balance of the vehicle unlocks and the downplayed importance of squads. And I guess that friendly fire seems to be off by default, when it was on by default in 2142... But I guess you don't care about that part, because you're not into it for the military simulation. Which is strange to me, because the odd sense of realism is what got me into the series in the first place, so I whole-heartedly welcome changes to emphasize that.

Now if they could only remake 2142 with the Frostbite 2 engine, add BF3 levels of destructibility to all the levels, include the parkour elements and suppression mechanic and bring back commander mode... That would be my favorite game of all time. They could even make it blue and I wouldn't give a crap.

Wow. I definitely didn't expect goofy little Tokyo Jungle to bear one of the most solid examples of good cover art I've seen recently. I'm glad to have seen that!

Unmanned was great, too. Played through it three times (earnest first shot, intentionally screwing everything up,  completionist run). Got just enough game in it to make the storytelling really matter, I think.

Holy crap that's a lot of pony... Even as someone who appreciates the references, isn't that a bit much? Or is it so much that it goes beyond being too on the nose and actually becomes funny because of how blatant it is...? I- I don't know anymore...

Not sure if that 1up article was supposed to reaffirm how I feel about the whole "creepy Japanese" deal or not, but that's what it ended up doing.

Okay, so, the whole sexualization thing is not widely accepted over there, just like how it isn't over here. It's just there because the unfortunate, isolated crowd it caters to is substantial enough to target an entire industry at and tempt designers to abandon sensible values in order to exploit them for the sake of money. Then I'll stop being disgusted by the idea that enough people buy into that kinda stuff to make it a viable business strategy and start being disgusted at the companies that perpetuate that image and style of life for their own profit. Less contempt for Japanese culture, more contempt for Japanese business practices, woop! Not sure that's what you wanted me to feel, but that's how it is now.

The Secret of Monkey Island, Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge, The Curse of Monkey Island

Escape from Monkey Island, Tales of Monkey Island

The only other example I can think of. And Monkey Island 2's title STILL annoys my OCD.

This... this explains so much...

Every time something reminds me of Monkey Island, I do a little mental dance where I try to remind myself how many games are in that series and which came out when, and I never feel like I quite got it right. I finally understand that I kept forgetting about the second game! Man... that's.. a weird sort of relief...

I don't... Why do the first and third games have subtitles but the second has just a number? Could they simply not think of anything to say about DA2, or is DA3 so shallow that they felt they needed to reintroduce a subtitle to make it seem flashier? I'm okay with the first product in a series having a subtitle and the rest having numbers. Previous experience with the Halo franchise has taught me that it makes it much easier to search the Internet for things solely relating to the first game. But past that, it's perfectly okay to just use numbers. Or subtitles. Or possibly both, for extreme clarity. It just seems odd to have a trilogy going where the middle part has no name of its own...

You know, Fellowship of the Ring, LotR 2 and Return of the King. That's catchy.

Not surprised to see some really poor ideas showing up! The worst offenders are the attempts at blanking out the punchlines of references that are only funny because of the punchline. Meaning they will never end up funny. I'm admit it's really difficult to come up with good stuff, though. I find it helps to keep the name of the game in mind. It's Cards Against Humanity, so get your filthy, offensive and inappropriate on!

In other news, I'm unproportionally excited about this collaboration and I hope it turns out as amazing as it deserves to be!

In the words of yet another Indie type person: "Charging a fee doesn't sort the people who are good or serious, it sorts between those with the fee and those without.XBLIG has a fee. Filled with shit. App store has a fee. Filled with shit. Android. Fees. Filled with shit. And on..."

Doesn't that quote suggest that the problem is rarely the platform or the fee, it's the developers‽

Yes, it does. The same "developers" mentioned earlier, with their amazing mazes and stick figure action games. The kind of people Valve are trying to scare off with the $100 fee. And some of which won't be deterred at all, because they genuinely think their "game" is good and people would want to pay for it and they'll get their hundred bucks back in no time. The fee doesn't weed out the delusional, just the poor.
