2010

A bad ol’ year for me.

List items

  • March–April. This is the game that I looked forward to more than any other, in its original incarnation on the N64. The brilliant N64 magazine used to hype it like no other (except maybe Turok 2...), and though its release came in the middle of summer of 2000, I remember the day as if it was Christmas. This HD remix is well-made.

  • April–July. Brilliant. I don’t know what pushed me to check this out, having not played a Battlefield game before, but I can see why this is so beloved. The game engine is great, with much less reliance on building destruction than Battlefield: Bad Company. The shooting also feels a lot more precise, especially with my favoured class, the rifleman.

  • June. Marvellous. The story is absolutely terrible Japanese silliness, with some Godawful characters and what looks to me like unfinished cutscenes that have been replaced with animatics to save development time. The combat mechanics are simply brilliant.

  • July.

  • September. Haven’t played many FPS games recently, and only really got to play this 3 years after it was released. A very impressive game. Infinity Ward really pursued a very cogent vision for the game, solidifying the FPS setpiece from earlier explorations in Half-Life.

  • October. I really don’t understand why this game somehow became the darling of critics, bemoaning its poor sales numbers. It is not Psychonauts. Not by a long shot. The art direction is excellent, but the combat mechanics are clunky as hell. Gave up.

  • October. Fun and no-nonsense platforming. Hugely unforgiving.

  • December. Not as good as I had hoped, but I played it through to completion and enjoyed my time with Alan and Barry. The graphics are very atmospheric; probably the best atmospherics I’ve seen. The story is convoluted, but the gunplay is relatively good. Is a little bit too long.
