So far, so good (preliminary best of 2010)

With the end of the year rapidly approaching, I decided to make a list of this year's games that I've had the most fun with so far. It is a prelude of sorts to my Best of 2010 that I'll compile eventually and the games that I include on this list are most likely to be included on that final list.

I'm still on the fence on whether or not some games belong on this list (Fallout New Vegas, I'm looking at you), so perhaps I'll keep updating this list until the end of the year.

By the way, why can't I include paragraphs in the text for this list (see below)?

List items

  • This is the first game I bought in 2010 and still is, by far, the singlemost engrossing experience I've had this year. While I do think the game somewhat lacks the large-scale space opera feel of its predecessor (mostly due to the more segmented structure of the game), the dialogue is again top-notch; both in writing and in delivery (mostly). The visual style is amazing (I also really like the horizontal blueish lens flares), the character models were significantly improved, BioWare released some interesting DLC (most notably Lair of the Shadow Broker)--there is a lot to like, here. While I feel some of ME1's characters were really shafted, I'm delighted by the inclusion of my two favorite characters: Tali and Garrus.

Maybe by the end of the year I'll write a comprehensive piece with my thoughts concerning this outstanding piece of media entertainment.

  • I love Devil May Cry 1 and 3 (especially 3), but this game is on another level. It is by far the best character action game that I've ever played; it's plenty crazy, has really fast-paced action with a deep combat system, it has a convoluted story, and somehow Bayonetta comes through all the crazy as an interesting character (over-the-top but still interesting). What's more, it is quite lengthy without coming across as repetitive. In a world where action games are becoming shorter and shorter, this quality is something that is to be lauded.

  • I've played Civ IV since its release and didn't stop until Civ V came around. There's a lot that irks me about this game and I'm still not quite convinced it is better than its direct predecessor. That said, the game offers a deep and very compelling experience that is entirely its own instead of just being an updated ersion of Civ IV.

    This year's best strategy game.

  • The first iteration made my best-of-2009 list and I still believe it's one of the finest entries in the music game genre this decade--that is, if you can get into the east-asian variant of this genre.

Similar to entries in the Beat Mania series, DJ MAX Technika 2 is an updated version of the first game with more songs, some additional modes and gameplay mechanics. While merely an evolution of the first game, Technika 2 is perhaps even more entertaining (and more difficult) and wholly is deserves a place on this list.

For those uninformed, this is an arcade game that utilizes two displays of which one is a touch screen. The player is required to tap or slide specific patterns on the touch screen in time with the music. In concept it shares similarities to Ouendan (or Elite Beat Agents), but with an execution difficulty that is more in line with the DJ MAX series. All songs are accompanied by animated videos--a lot of which are really cool.

YouTube has a lot of videos of this and the first game, so check that out to see what this looks like in action.

If you can find this in a local arcade, don't pass-up the opportunity to check this game out. It is awesome.

  • The definitive version of last year's best fighting game.

  • Oh god, this game is awesome. It can be frustrating as hell but it's awesome. Did you hear the soundtrack? Amazing. Don't miss this game!

  • 360 version.

I don't know what it is, exactly. There's something about the visual style and the sound of this game that makes me really REALLY like it. This is a downloadable that shouldn't be missed!
