I'm a few hours into Arkham City and see no reason why you couldn't just jump right in. The mechanics don't seem to be described as well as in Arkham Asylum but shouldn't take that long to pick up. The story may carry over a little from the first game in so much as the Joker and Batman didn't get along and guess what....they still aren't getting along. Go get it and have fun!

Riviera Maya as well. All-inclusive resort. We did a couple excursions and had a blast.

I didn't meticulously read everyone's post, but I don't believe anyone mentioned getting books from your local library.  These magical places are miraculously free!  And if you live in an area with much of a population the selection should be robust enough to fill plenty of time while saving you money.
