As you may know China has violated their treaty with Britain to ensure political autonomy of Hong Kong until 2047. This week China has in a matter of hours made public a new law punishing certain forms of political dissent and speech and arrested hundreds of residents of Hong Kong. I have included links to some news stories below.
For me, it is sometimes hard to know what to do over the past several years as the Chinese government has slowly been crushing the formerly autonomous Hong Kong. A boycott against Chinese goods would be absurd as their economy and ours are so tightly wound together that removing all Chinese made material from your life would leave you with little else.
The same is not true, however, for software. The Chinese government has slowly been making a foothold into this space and a boycott of those products may prove powerful. For my part I will no longer play any games or interface with the Epic Game store any longer. I have left a list of Chinese owned platforms below. I personally don't interact with social media and Giant Bomb is one of the few "social platforms" I engage in. That being said, I believe in this community and if Drew can be a meme maybe this action can also take root.
- Tencent
- Riot Games Supercell *84% Ownership*
- Clash of Clans
- Clash Royale
- Epic Games *50% Ownership*
- Fortnight
- Epic Game Engine
- Unreal Series
- Gears of War
- etc.
- Activision Blizzard *5% Ownership*
- Ubisoft *5% Ownership*
- TikTok
I would also urge people to select products that are not organized in China (i.e. buy a Korean, Japanese or American Television rather than a Chinese one like TCL or Hisense). While the material itself is likely still made in China less money will go to a Chinese government who is brutally oppressing the people of Hong Kong.
I put some links down below. I have been rather dejected about the loss of Autonomy of the Hong Kong people and the brutal way that China has enforced it. I don't know what else to do and, sadly, the news story is just getting eaten up by all of the chaos of the day. If anybody has any other ideas, please discuss.
