Favorite Games of 2013

You'll notice that there are a ton of 3DS games in here. Here's why:

The 3DS had the best games this year. Why else?

List items

  • I just woke up from the most insane fever dream ever; I was playing chess, but every single piece had a name. I knew their backgrounds, I knew who fought alongside who, and sometimes I even overheard them talking to each other, forming strong alliances and backing each other up. I couldn't decide which pieces to use because DAMN IT THEY'RE ALL SO GOOD and I want them all to succeed, grow, live! Oh man, that time that Ricken tore through an entire force and liberated a city on his own? Never knew that kid had it in him. What a beast! Also, what was that glorious music that was playing in the background? I'd have to say, if it were in a game, it would be one of the best soundtracks of all time. Ahead of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds.

Oh, it's an actual game? Well, then, Game of the Year 2013.

  • Say what you will about a high-flying shooting gallery of a game that seems to have something to say about violence - this game had me thinking about causality and multiple worlds right when I needed to be doing so. Enjoying this game is so personal - some will look for the anti-racism theme more and be rightfully disappointed, some will look for a strong female lead in Elizabeth and be all "meh," and some will look for Call of Duty-style shooting... I have absolutely nothing to say to those guys. It's my #2, because I liked the thing this game was actually about. And that cover of God Only Knows.

  • What can I say? It's a new Zelda game focused on discovery, with an amazing soundtrack, a 60fps framerate (a highly under-rated feature in games today!), twitchy-good controls, interesting but not garrulous characters, and did I mention the soundtrack?

  • Gee, I talk a lot about soundtracks. This is probably the most aesthetically pleasing game I've played in a long time, because it's so unified. The art style is all straight line-based shapes with no curves in sight, fitting right in line with Phlogiston's jagged, synth-heavy tunes (you may have heard him in Spelunky or Super Crate Box). It's the only game I'll tilt an iPad to play. And what an interface! That must have been Zach Gage's part in all this.

  • It's Castlevania. The OG Castlevania that was all about timing. With swords. And randomly-generated characters and levels. And bullet-hell bosses. What's not to like? I want to play the other games I got in the Steam Sale, but this one pulls me back in.

  • This was the first official SMT game I was able to really delve into, and even though it's quite like its predecessors, I loved it. It's an RPG that doesn't mess around (Don't even try to reason with Charon if you lose, he's a horrible person - SAVE OFTEN), and the depth of demon negotiations and recruitment is staggering. Hey, it's mostly new to me! Also, I loved that you could take an order or chaos path, but the canon ending only happened if you were neutral... and being neutral was really, really hard to do. It grated on your nerves as you made every decision, and one wrong move and you were on the extreme tracks... but it's the only correct path! Oh, Eastern philosophy. You're so... right, honestly.

  • I don't like MMO's. They try to tell me the time I need to be somewhere, like I've got nothing better to do, making me complete some stupid and inconsequential tasks for a bit of loot, making me interact with other people like you're supposed to show off your in-game stuff, and when you don't want to play anymore, it makes me feel all horrible about it. Also, this is exactly what Animal Crossing: New Leaf is, and somehow I love it.

  • YARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

  • #TeamFroakie

  • Yet another Atlus RPG that doesn't mess around. I'll never, ever beat this game, but it's sitting there, waiting for me (to die again).
