Been having a great time playing through the campaign mode in Gloomhaven the past few months, and wanted to call this game out for anyone who's been bitten by the deck-buikding bug. This game has so much varied and deeply strategic content to play through. Highly recommended, with a few caveats.
So, this is a digital adaptation of a boardgame. I've played the physical tabletop game a couple times with friends, but the amount of setup and bookkeeping made it a non-starter for me. The digital version takes care of those issues. Just jumping into an online game with a couple friends and getting to the interesting choices immediately is so much more satisfying.
The gameplay does take some time to wrap your head around (in my experience at least) but if you have experience with some deck builders as well as the language around effects and abilities of the typical fantasy dungeon-crawling party, you should be able to catch on pretty quick, and then you're just digging into the juicy strategic and tactical decisions of the game.
This really is a great, but niche, experience of one of the best epic tabletop games, condensed down to it's most concise form. My biggest hang up is that the game visuals aren't going to win any awards, the campaign narrative is pretty straightforward, and the learning curve is pretty steep initially. But even with those in mind, Gloomhaven definitely ranks in the top games of the year for me.
