I imagine Ryan's giving Mr. Melville a hearty handshake and a tumbler of bourbon on the other side. Condolences to his family, he provided the gaming community with some truly unique entertainment in his time.
All the Hallmarks of a modern Bethesda game: fantastic landscapes and architecture to explore, solid gameplay mechanics and rpg stat contrivances, bad main storylines, terribly bland and unnatural character interactions, poorly written EVERYTHING and world scaling (though this is much less of an annoyance in Fallout 3).
Bethesda provides pretty cool sandbox-type stuff, and the sheer amount of stuffto do in these games is ridiculous (even though alot of it is, um, not really worth doing) but I really don't think the quality of the roleplaying is up to par with Bioware's stuff. Fun games, but without strong characters and a sense of narrative purpose they ultimately feel a touch soulless.
Also the humour in Fallout 3 was done really ham-fistedly.
