Top 10 of 2010

2010 was an excellent year in gaming. Sure, there were a bunch of mediocre sequels, shovelware and uninspired rip-offs just like every year. Regardless of this, some of the best games of this generation and possibly of all time were released. Here's my top 10 from an amazing year in gaming.

List items

  • How could this not be number 1? Amazing story, excellent gameplay, beautiful graphics. Mass Effect 2 did everything right, with Mass Effect 3 on the horizon, it looks like this series could get even better.

  • Absolute platforming perfection. Amazing soundtrack, perfect controls and an almost vertical learning curve makes this challenging, yet immensely fun and addictive game my number 2.

  • Se7en and Sin City meets Broken Sword in Quantic Dreams incredible cinematic adventure. Intensely gripping throughout with believable characters and a story that changes around your actions. In a lesser year, this would be a clear number 1 as it stands, number 3 is definitely not to be sniffed at.

  • While it is more of the same Fallout gameplay and seems to have a much bigger bug problem than its 2008 predecessor, New Vegas is still one of the greatest games of the year. Amazing exploration, setting and memorable characters and storyline make this a solid 4 on my list.

  • While only my second craziest game on this list (more on that later), Bayonetta is still a bit mental. Deep combat and tight controls compliment the flair and fast pacing of one of 2010's surprise hits. Love or hate the madcap story elements, no one can deny that Bayonetta is no slouch when it comes to bashing ten shades out of creepy looking angels.

  • While not quite filling the boots of its predecessor, Dead Rising 2 definitely raised the bar in terms of zombie carnage. If it had carved out its own niche instead of sprucing up the original games concepts, this could have been much higher on the list.

  • Lords of Shadow is probably the first 3D Castlevania that I would actually reccomend someone other than rabid fans to play. While the 2D game's sense of depth and exploration isn't quite matched, this huge and epic quest is certainly worth a playthrough.

  • The first game near the bottom of this list that owes a fair bit to David Lynch. Alan Wake has a fantastically dark story and incredible atmosphere. Repetitive gameplay and lack of replay value aside, Wake is a great experience first time around.

  • While it may not look or play as well as a AAA title, Deadly Premonition has a lot of heart and passion. Couple this with a spooky-yet-somehow-hilarious storyline, that again borrows from David Lynch and you definitely have the makings of a memorable title.

  • SSFIV is no mere update to Capcom's already awesome Street Fighter IV, it's an experience all of its own. More balanced characters, a significantly expanded roster and fantastic online modes make this the definitive version of this modern classic. Well...until Super Street Fighter IV Turbo Hyper Fighting World Warriors edition...
