Plain and simple, it makes no sense right now for Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo to bring out a new console at E3 this year.
1 .Right now, the economy is still not that great, and lots of people have just bought a "Next-gen" system within the last 2-3 years, I don't think many people are up to laying down $500-$600 for a new console within the next year.
2. The current systems out on the market are still selling and still have lots of potential customers to buy one.
3. Games are still improving both graphically and game-play wise. Look at some of the games that came out on the PS2 during 05-08, some of those games really looked to good to be running on a PS2.
4. Both Microsoft and Sony have ran into some difficulties with their current systems, Microsoft with the TRL, and Sony with the cost of development and lack of immediate sales and exclusives.
5. I and many of my friends believe that games right now look great graphically and that there is no reason to bring out a new system for improved graphics just yet. I think the graphics on the 360 and PS3 can hold me over at least another 2-3 years, plus they will continue to improve a little, kinda like Gears 1 to Gears 2 and probably to Gears 3.
6. Microsoft has Natal coming this fall, that will be their big E3 hoopla, plus they have Halo:Reach, Alan Wake, Crackdown 2, and maybe Gears 2 coming later this year. Sony has God of war 3, MAG, and if I'm not mistaken, they are working on some kind of motion sensing device. And Nintendo still has the Wii which is profiting money on every unit sold and has been for a while, if not since day one, Super Mario Galaxy, No More Heroes 2, and hopefully Metroid: Other M.
7. Finally, to help so you why graphics are probably not a concern for Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, I would like to point to the Wii/PS2 and a game called Crysis. First, I will be very blunt, the Wii is just old technology redesigned and fitted with a new control scheme, that's all it is, don't get me wrong, I love it but that's all it is. Could of easily been a new peripheral for the game cube but obviously it would not catch on and it would not sell because people would declare it old. But, the Wii continues to sell. PS2 games also continue to drizzle out and sell somewhat decent considering the console is almost 10 years old. Bottom line, the last gen life cycle was cut way to short by MS's determination to get the 360 out before Sony and Nintendo could get their system's out. And of course, the big reason why MS did this was because the original xbox was basically a failure as far as sales go.
8. My point about Crysis is a pretty simple one, and it's also one that I'm sure developers and console maker's are paying attention to. It was the first graphically ground breaking game to totally bomb the way it did. What I mean is, the game looks absolutely stunning, and it takes a real powerful machine to run it, which costs some money. In the past people would run out and upgrade/buy a new pc to go and play a game like that, but in 2007, that did not happen. Even though it looked so amazing, and still does to this day when compared to the best looking games from last year, people just didn't care enough about the new eye candy. Which, with a new console, is pretty much all you're paying for if/when Sony, MS, and Nintendo release new consoles. So, what does this mean, to me, I interpret it as meaning people just aren't in a rush for a new graphical upgrade in games yet, and that the way games look right now is just fine, and given that the fact that no other developers have tried to push the limit again since Crysis, I think they too realize that people just aren't ready for a graphical leap.
p.s. I think if we see any new consoles at E3, they will be hand-held. The DS came out way back in 2004 and a lot of the games are getting old looking fast. I think the time could be right for Nintendo to bring out a new hand-held with the power of the Gamecube, I'm sure it would cost much to manufacturer them and they won't cost as much for people to buy, maybe somewhere around $200, also it's probably been a long time for lots of people since they've bought a new hand-held gaming device. And you never know if sony will unleash a PSP 2 built straight up to be a digital only gaming device or something even though they just released to PSPGO not that long ago, When Nintendo released the DS, they just released the GBA Micro, so there is precedence for that.
