He didn't do anything wrong! Stop hurting him!

Surprise.  Another Devil May Cry blog.

I noticed that since the new game was announced a lot of people have been shitting on DMC4 with people saying it was a terrible game.  Now the game was far from perfect and it wasn't great but it was good.  A quote from some guy on the internet. "Some people would say that Shawshank Redemption is a better movie than Godfather part 1 but that doesn't make Godfather a piece of shit."  Devil May Cry 3 was certainly a better game than DMC4 was but that doesn't mean it's bad at all.  Hell, if they decided to give Dante new levels/bosses it would have been great, instead it was still good and fun to play.

Anyone also remember fighting the same bosses in DMC1-3 as well?  What about in DMC3 when Dante made it to the top of the tower halfway through the game but was forced to go much lower and get back up.  Now those games did mix it up more than DMC4 for sure but it was still a good game.

I have marathon played all of the series in the order of release back to back and DMC2 is the only one that deserves any claim of terrible gameplay.

unfortunately, in most series if one entry didn't innovate like the previous it is usually seen as a failure.

the fact that 4 is between a game that was such an improvement and another that will change quite a bit means it'll be seen as somewhat vanilla.

but then again i liked nero so what do i know.

DMC4 fell short of expectations set in DMC3 (and by competing similar games like Ninja Gaiden and God of War, and yes they're similar enough elitists), that's all it was. And it was also just the perfect example of bad modern game design, forcing you to tread through everything twice to make the game longer.

DMC 4 is the best in the series.  If you don't think so, then luckily, you happen to have a convenient slot in the lower part of your back where you can shove it.

Yeah, I think part of the reason why I wasn't a big fan is that God of War had a similar enough character action feel while having a much more adventurous and epically scaled scope, and that was PS2, while DMC4 was pretty much half a game then mirror mode while playing as Dante. There was also the hilarious and pretty obvious mistranslation of Kyrie, this generation's Victoly.

@HandsomeDead: I like God Of War more but I just don't think DMC4 deserves to be called a bad game.

I loved DMC4. I was a bit bummed out the last half of the game was just the first half in reverse, but it was still a lot of fun.
However, DMC3 is still my favorite of the series. I enjoyed the characters and cutscenes more in the 3rd one. DMC4 didn't have enough Lady :(
Plus, Showdown between Dante and Vergil was awesome.

I know alot of people will hate me for saying this but i think they should have ditched  Dante's gameplay all together and focused completely on Nero's in DMC4. Unlike the other DMC Dante's simply wasnt fun to play in 4 to me. The enemy AI simply wasn't designed for Dante playstyle, so they should have ditched Dante, and focused on making more missions for Nero and possibly another Devil Arm for him, I mean for god sake the RT/R2 wasn't even used for Nero at all, felt like something was missing.

That's.... BLASHPEMY!

With that said, that's an interesting view on the game. I'm glad they didn't do what you suggested though, because I would be in turmoil.
Devil May Cry just isn't Devil May Cry without Dante. Its his business, afterall.

That would be interesting.  I preferred Nero's part to Dante.  The battle tower or whatever it was called could still use Dante though.  I wish they would've added characters to that.

Dante could still be in the story too.  It would be cool to fight along side him as Nero.  The Giant boss that Dante fought was fun though and it would be cool if that was the only part that had him as playable in the story.

I'm not really in a position to say this since I played DMC4 and then 3, but Dante's gameplay did feel like he accumulated too much stuff while Nero felt like he didn't get enough, so maybe Dante should have been removed, or at the very least brought down a few notches.

4 was fine, I prefered the Nero levels though, the rev/arm mechanics were way more fun than anything dante could do.

DMC4 is the first game I've played in the series (so far anyway) and I think it was awesome, even with the obvious backtracking flaw.  The combat with both Nero and Dante is really fun and both have their own depth:  Nero has the Insta-Rev system and Dante has his Devil Arms.  I do wish there had been some more background and storyline explanation into Nero's character, but I didn't really have a problem with him (though Dante was WAY more enjoyable, I loved the hell out of the Lucifer and Agnus cutscenes) and figured that could have gone into the next game, although that looks like a pipe dream at this point.
