My God do I hate this franchise. (Nerd Rage Ensues)

Ok so I watched the first three movies and am currently watching a Let's Play of the video game.

Now I thought the first movie was actually kind of cool with it's mystery and story and the goings on of these 2 people trapped together.  However the series quickly devolved into a slide show of death scenes, which is alright but they have to weave in this stupid ass story into it.  I hate the fact that the killer uses the "Well he just couldn't do it in time, he killed himself."  THE FUCKER IS SETTING UP FUCKING TRIP WIRES WITH SHOTGUNS IN WAREHOUSES AND SHIT, KIDNAPPING, PUTTING PEOPLE INTO DANGEROUS SITUATIONS, AND IF IT AIN'T MURDER IT'S ASSISTED SUICIDE AT BEST!!!!!  This guy is a fucking genius and he keeps claiming he doesn't kill people when he should know that shit won't hold up anywhere!

I watched the let's play of Saw to see some more death and puzzles but the story is just as stupid.  I thought it wouldn't be to close to the story of the films but no, I was wrong.  The wife of the detective that got killed, BY ONE OF THIS FUCKER'S TRAPS THAT HE SET UP TO KILL THESE PEOPLE. is arguing against Jigsaw.  She says something along the lines of you killed him.  Jigsaw then says he killed himself because he fell into the trap.  She replies with "You set up the trap!"  Jigsaw replies that Tapp could've disarmed the trap.  DESPITE THE FACT THAT HE HAD HIS THROAT SLIT AND WAS STRUGGLING TO DO ANYTHING AT THE TIME LET ALONE FINDING THE TRAP AND TRYING TO WARN HIS PARTNER!!!!  She is then automatically on Jigsaw's side.  WHAT THE FUCK!!!  SHE IS THE MOST GULLIBLE BITCH IN THE WORLD!!!!

Now what's even worse is the series seems to try to make Jigsaw out as this good hearted man who is just a bit rough to put it mildly.  Aw I have cancer, Aw my unborn kid died now I will kill everyone I know and everyone that litters on the street.  The writers seem to want to write these victims as terrible people with the tell but don't show tactic.  "You want to see these scums of the Earth die right?!"  No, you seem to just get drug addicts who stole out of their mom's purse.  That's not good but it's not the worst thing in the world either.  When you try to write characters we are supposed to hate it comes off as pathetic when you suck at it.  It ends up being some bland ass character with a tag-line that says "Oh yeah, this guys supposed to be a murderer so he's bad ok?  Ok."  NO!  SHOW HE'S A BAD PERSON IN HIS ACTIONS AND PERSONALITY WITHOUT BEING BORING AND BLAND!  SUBLTY GUYS!

Jigsaw also comes off as an evil rip off of Batman.  He has a plan for things even after he dies.  Log into the Jigsaw computer and you got a bunch of traps and future victims and how the traps and events in the film are going to turn out.  It works for Batman cause at least he's likable and has a lot of good stories around him and he's a comic book character.  Your some fucker who acts like a bitch trying to justify your actions through faulty logic.

I saw and I ran away. Scary shit scares me, not a fan of horror.

Posted by PrivateIronTFU

Anybody with half a brain and marginally good taste hates these movies.

Posted by Indiana_Jenkins

I really liked the first movie. And that's all I have to contribute because that's the extent of my Saw knowledge.

Posted by Ignor

Don't expect anything good to come out of a horror *franchise* story-wise.
Or, at least don't expect it to make sense.

gorture porn for the lose

Posted by Grissefar

I liked the first one and some day I said to myself: "Man, those sequels are probably pretty dumb but I want to watch all 6(?) movies - they might be fun." I could not get past the third movie. It's too dumb and makes absolutely no sense.

Posted by KimChi4U

I just wonder at how demented someone must be to come up with the traps/torture in this series. I've seen the first Saw movie and thought it wasn't bad...kinda like a poor man's Seven. I watched the second one up until the scene where the guy/girl (can't remember because it was so disturbing) had to dive into a pile of dirty syringes in order to find a key. I shut it off and never touched another one. I mean, that takes a really sick mind to come up with something like that.
Posted by CitizenKane

I have never cared for the franchise and a lot of it's extreme fan base annoys me, especially when they say Jigsaw is one of the greatest movie villains ever.  Yeah, no.

Sub-genre's that dont exist for the lose.
Posted by TooWalrus

That first movie was alright, I saw the 2nd one and didn't care for it. I haven't seen anything after that, and don't really care to.

Posted by TheFreeMan

Back when this series was really popular I must have been just going into high-school, and people were all talking about SAW.

"This chick had to dive into a pile of syringes!" "this guy got his arms and head twisted off!" "this other chick got her ripcage ripped out!".

I asked "So what's it about? Why the fuck are people getting torn apart?".

"Well cause some crazy dude in a mask has cancer so he wants to show them the meaning of life, so he puts them in these traps".

And that was when I told myself I wasn't ever going to pay money to watch a SAW movie. Sounds pretty awful. I read the wiki summaries for the series and it's story sounds needlessly convoluted and ridiculous, too, and if I want fancy death scenes (which I've youtubed more than a few) I'm pretty sure there's other movies out there that can provide that, but with something good built around them.

So yeah. SAW. What're they at, now? A 3D installment? Damn.

Any movie franchise that manages to get to #7 after only 6 years is never gonna be a winner. What perplexes me most is that big sites still cover them as if they hope or assume they'll have a miraculous turnaround in quality. As soon as the big news about the films was the number of people fainting and vomiting in the audience I was out.

Posted by HandsomeDead

I have no idea how anyone can care about Saw beyond the first one, and even then, it' a struggle to see why people give a fuck.

Posted by Hourai

I watched the first three as they came out, then stopped paying attention until a few months ago when I watched 4-6 in one night. The acting is absolutely terrible, but that's what makes it fun to watch.

Posted by DrPockets000

I guess I'm the only one that derives guilty entertainment from these.

Edited by Jeust

I've only seen the second and fourth movies in the saga.

The basis that served to create the franchise is a valid one, as people generally treasure their life when they are close to death, but it creeps me out to think that someone has done / is doing that shit somewhere.

But appart from it, it is the gorefest that inspired other franchises like Hostel. And I hate them all!

In my opinion, it is a legitimately good series of films. I have yet to play the games, though.

I agree with pretty much everything you said. Even if you did say it a month ago. If i want a good horror film, i'll watch Alien, thanks.

Never cared about the story, only thinking about what I would do in those situations. The first few f'd with my head but I never watched any past those.

I don't think of Saw as horror really.

It's just gore, which I'm not a fan of (in film that is.)

1st one was the only good one, the rest is torture porn and shit.

All I know about Saw I learned from Quick Looks on GiantBomb. They looked like okay survival horror games.

The gameplay itself looks interesting and maybe ok-good yes.

First few movies in the series were good & I'm a big fan of the horror genre, once the main villian died the series turned into a grand guignol of cheeky traps & not much else. So after that going back to films like 2000 Maniacs (by Herschell Gordon Lewis) or Horrors of the Black Museum or other classics that were littered with interesting murderous trapped devices.

Posted by Kjellm87

Never watched any Saw except this quicklook. The ideas, traps and mini-games was so often and short betwheen that I believe this game will be very short. ( And the key in eye thing was just messed up)

Posted by Bloodgraiv3

It has a cool idea behind it and the first movie was decent, but now its just awful.
Posted by ultimatepunchrod

eh ive watched all of them but i stopped paying for them a while ago. 1st and 2nd were good. the rest werent. ill probably watch saw 3d once it comes out on DVD just to finish out the series, but im kinda glad that our generation has a horror series thats gone on way too long. like the friday the 13th, halloween, and nightmare on elm street series. saw will be remade in about 5 years and it will suck worse.

Posted by Jrad

The first SAW was great. The sequels, though? They're hilarious. How can you not love the atrocious so-bad-it's-good acting, the narmy screaming, and the mediocre special effects? I'm amazed there are people who are 'shocked' by it still; here I thought our culture had long since been desensitized by the internet.

Posted by Brendan

1st one had something going for it, the second was made as an excuse to watch people die, and I've never looked backed since.  Fuck those movies.

Posted by PrivateIronTFU

Meh. They're shitty, shitty movies. Even the first one was god-awful. But the good news is I don't have to watch them. What's also good is that they're released around Halloween, with no other good movies releasing. So they don't take away ticket sales from the movies that actually deserve it. So I don't really have a beef with the franchise.

Fuck Saw. What the fuck is wrong with us.

Saw the first three and thought they were good.  Nothing wrong with showing some death scenes in a horror movie dude.

My problem is the movies' need to justify the actions of Jigsaw and his cronies.

I'm ok with a lot of death in movies.

eh... it's true I was thinking about this while watching.  This jigsaw guy is an ordinary human being, yet he somehow knows everything about these people.  Like in the third movie it's about that guy who lost his son in the car accident, and apparently there was a witness who didn't help and drove off, but how the hell does jigsaw know there was a witness, and how does he find her?  Stuff like that is just not possible, but I decided to ignore it and continue enjoying the carnage and plot twists.

I too enjoy me some saw. sure it's not an Emmy winner but I don't think that's what they're going for, it fills a nitch and it needs a convoluted story to wrap itself around. Simple as that. not for you? great, move on.

Just because I don't watch doesn't mean I don't know it's shit. The first was an interesting concept done acceptably, I can't imagine any of the convoluted, money shot gore sequels being any better.

But what are those parts? It's B-movie trash at its trashiest and if people talked about it if that were the case, then it would be fine but there's people who genuinely think it's a great series. Besides being a complete gorehound, I don't know who can enjoy the films outside the realm of guilty pleasure.
Posted by zityz

They're not that bad. I like to refer to them as your modern day Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street. A franchise that has a good movie that spawns some good sequels and some super shiity ones. I really liked the first one but I also enjoyed the 4th. The 3rd one is the worst in terms of gore and I stoped after the 5th with no real intention per sey to watch the rest. It's just a type of horror genre. You like it or not.

I stopped watching after three, I'm not a fan of gore (outside of video games^^).

Original Saw film was great.  A clever idea with a great twist ending and all done on an indi-film budget. I liked it alot.

But yeah everything else Saw related is a steaming turn of mediocrity.    I wouldn't mind seeing a more skillful developer take the game concepts though and make something awesome.  Monolith could probably do a good job.

In my opinion, the live-action Transformers films are the best action movies that have come out in the last ten years, but nobody agrees with me, either. High five of unpopular film opinion solidarity!

I do think, however, that I think the Saw films are actually great and I'm not just saying that to be a contrarian to popular opinion.
