I say buy the MAC before you get into University. Apple comes out with products all the time.   Why not buy a MAC right before you go to University? You'll get more with the same price you would have spent.  And a MAC definitely would not last longer than a powerful gaming laptop. A GT260M could last you a good 3-4 years of playing all the high end games. Like high end lol  You could also go to powernotebooks.com and get a really powerful laptop if you want  "

My friend spend $1500 on his hyper-powered HP laptop only to have it crap out a year and a half later :/ He's had the power supply changed 3 times and the circuitboard is fucked, not allowing him to charge the battery. He unfortunately found that out after buying a new battery. :/ My girlfriend's also had CONSTANT problems with her laptop. She's running Vista, though. :/ A very limited experience, but something that's made me stray far from Windows none-the-less.

@DanielJW: Yes, it's standard on every Mac. Some extra loop packs and shit cost extra, though. But the full thing is there for free. :D And yeah, get a mouse. If you're on the go, though, Macbooks have a feature in System Preferences that makes it so if you have two fingers on the trackpad while you click, it counts as a right-click. So thankful I found that out. "
There is your problem.

A HP laptop

HP is the worst. Without a doubt. I have no idea why people use it.

I'm telling you, get Gateway or Asus.

HP laptops make the launch 360 look like a reliable product. That is how bad HP computers are.

Don't listen to those idiots at Best Buy. never listen to them.

 1920 x 1080 display, a Core i7 720QM processor, 8GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 graphics

That is what you could get for $1400 from an Asus

Fucking powerful for a laptop

I would say get something in the 800-1100 price range. Use it and it will last you quite a few years for sure.

Then get the most up to date MAC right before University

" I switched from Windows to Mac a while back and haven't regretted the change since. I use it mainly for the Adobe Creative Suite and Apple's editing software, though. The "no games" downside went away when I got way into WoW a while back (quit playing, thankfully) and the recent launch of Steam has only aided that. I've been playing Torchlight like crazy because of it. o.O I have consoles for games, anyways.  I say it's worth it, but if you're tight on money, it's not like you can go wrong with Windows 7, especially if you're used to the OS. "
This is basically my gaming use. I play WoW, and the only PC games I find myself interested in are things like Counter Strike and TF2 that I can nab off Steam.

" $1675.00 for a laptop?  Jesus Christ... well if you got the dough and really need a mobile device to edit video then go for it. "
I want to get something that'll last me. I'm heading off to University in a couple years, hopefully into a film course, and I'm thinking this would be able to pull me through it. "

You used Vegas and thought it was good enough? Then get a Windows laptop.
Get an Asus. You can get a great gaming laptop and have Sony Vegas

Vista sucks if you don't have a strong computer. It is a complete resource hog. Windows 7 is much better. But the more powerful the computer, the less problems you will get

You can PM me if you want. I've gotten many laptops and helped my friends a lot.

What screen size? Max budget?

And are you using the MAC or laptop for university? You'll probably love a gaming laptop. Steam has the SEGA sale week on right now. The bundle costs $90. If you bought each game individually, it woul cost you like $400 more.

" Does that mean NBA 10 was better? "
it was

NBA11 is probably going to destroy 2K. EA sports games have been phenomenal. FIFA came back and destroyed PES (I was a PES fanboy). NHL EA destroyed NHL 2K. And now it is FIFA's turn.

There are some games that you can trade in as well which is awesome. As long as they have the GOO protection system.

damn, that code expired uggggggggggh

February 2010 lol.

It is far easier to use than Steam. I still love Steam though.

Impulse is great. You don't need it to be running if you want to play the games you bought from it unlike Steam. You can just put a shortcut on your desktop. You never need it on unless you want to download a game from Impulse.

Oh btw, I have a code for Demigod that lets you buy it for $7.50. It might be expired, not sure, let me check. Also pick up The Witcher for $10 on Impulse and Gal Civ 2 Ultimate Edition.

Sins of a Solar Empire is fantastic.

" Half-Life 2 series (but you play games so by the power of chance, I assume you've played them lol), Team Fortress 2, Trackmania, ugh. Can't think of much else...kinda scraping the bottom of the barrel here  If you're into MMOs, EVE and LotRO are two of your better options at the moment. "
He said 'unique' to PC.  Half-Life 2 and all the episodes have been released on the 360 and PS3. Half Life 2 was also ported onto the XBox 1. While its easy to turn your nose up at the console ports the 360 version I played is flat-out brilliant and don't feel at all half-arsed.TF2 is also part of The Orange Box and has 360/PS3 console ports. Yes, its never updated, but they're still console versions of the game.Trackmania isn't exclusive to the PC as a pretty good version also appeared on the DS.  "
Team Fortress 2 nowadays is unique to PC. You realize how much free content it  has received? The game play so different than it first launched. 3 new items/weapons for each class, like 30 new maps, new game modes, gameplay tweaks etc..

It isn't even close
