A Shifty Magician's list of Classic Titles

Just a personal list of games that I would personally call 'classics'. There will be games with flaws here as well, however there is something about these games that simply make me feel glad to be an enthusiast of games and that hint the enormous entertaining, artistic and/or immersing potential that games can achieve. I dare say some of these games may even become timeless classics, but that's just my subjective opinion.

This list will slowly continue to grow as more games pop up and I play more games I hadn't before. List placement is arbitrary (meaning I hold no value as to what game is in position 1, 2, 3...etc)

List items

  • I'm just a damn fan of the Elder Scrolls games but this one truly immersed me in its impressive world and dense content.

  • One of the most beautiful games that I have ever played and is simply something I had not experienced before it. Although gameplay-wise it has its flaws and lacks the complexity that other games of its type have accomplished, few games have ever tried to successfully realise a visual aesthetic that feels like it came out of a series of dreams and nightmares at once, giving the game a truly other-worldly feel. It's a game that should be experienced by any that wants to see something unique in gaming.

  • Simply a fun game to play and puts a smile on my face every time I play it. Challenging yet satisfying.

  • One of the most charming, intelligent games that I had the pleasure of figuring out. Soundtrack is also unforgettable. Also that solution sound is one of if not the best jingle in gaming for me period.

  • A gorgeous synergy of Sight and Sound, I will always fire this game up once in a while to experience it again.

  • Same as Rez and though I prefer the style of Rez more than this game, it still has the kind of experience that is one-of-a-kind and more people should experience it.

  • I am so glad a game like this got made. I never thought I would see a proper platforming Rayman game that plays, looks and sounds magnificent.

  • A timeless masterpiece. The roaming of a mysterious, deserted land filled with ancient beings that are all breathtaking and daunting to fight with only a sword, a bow and a horse.

The art is distinct, the gameplay is novel for every foe you fight and the accompanying orchestral soundtrack is eternally memorable especially when tied with some of the greatest moments the game has to offer.

  • Thumper is an example of a developer working so hard to nail a core gameplay element, a wild aesthetic and innovative sound design to deliver a thrilling experience that I will remember for a long time. In VR, it elevates to probably one of the most intense VR experiences one can have.

  • Never would anyone have thought that ID would re-capture the magic of this classic series, but here we are. Tight mechanics, expertly-crafted enemies that move about in impressive ways, impressive level design and a killer dynamic soundtrack combine to one of the best single-player FPS romps you might ever have. Multiplayer sucks but let's be real - no one in their right mind cared about having multiplayer in Doom and no one felt short-changed by it when the campaign is just perfect.
