Alright, so this was going to be one gigantic mega-blog, but I decided to break it up into segments as for some reason my computer doesn't have microsoft word or any word processing program (this thing is OLD), so I would have no real way of saving my work, so in this series of blogs I am going to detail and review all 15-some movies I have seen this summer.  Also, this is probably not going to be all flashy with pictures and videos just because, I'm not tech-savvy at all and I am incapable of doing anything like that :'(..  Anyone who knows any way I could add imagery or some sort of flare to this blog, please coach me on how to do so.  I am also goign to use the letter-grade system, as I believe that gives you the fairest representation of how I felt about the movie.

Anyways, let's get this show on the road

MOVIE 1: Star Trek

Let me get this out of the way, I have watched 1 episode of star trek in my entire life, and unfortunately for me, that was the episode with the hilariously bad rubber suit lizard-monster and laughable fight-choreography, so I went into this movie with absolutely no history on any of the Star Trek canon.   I am also not a fan of a lot of Mr. J.J. Abrams work, so I was not expecting to like this movie.  I was however pleasantly surprised, and can say with complete confidence that I enjoyed this movie far more than any of the new Star Wars movies.

The movie starts showing Captain Kirk's troubled youth, namely, being born in the middle of a exploding spaceship.  That is quite a way to enter the world, being born and then 5 seconds later seeing your dad get blown into fiery oblivion, it's understandable that James T. Kirk had a troubled youth.  Later we see him joyriding whilst listening to The Beastie Boys': Sabotage.  This is a weird musical choice, because in the future that Star Trek takes place in, I can only imagine that this is some sort of weird classical-music, and has long been replaced with more advanced genres.  Listening to Beastie Boys while joyriding in the future is much like listening to Mozart while joyriding in modern times, the police officer must have found this youth very strange.  Well, anyways, after nearly plummeting to his death, he looks up at the local law enforcement agent, and says "Is there a problem officer?".   That's it, there is no resolution to this scene, which I found a little weird.  I guess it's just a character building thing.

So, we jump into the future again, where Mr. Kirk likes to go into bars and sexually harass young women.  Unfortunately, he ends up harassing the space-military agent Uhura, and gets his ass handed to him by some higher-up.  The captain stops him however, and invites Kirk to join the space-cops, as they are low on sexual deviants.  Kirk accepts and the movie advances from there.

The movie introduces us to a cast of quirky characters, whom I can only assume are Star-Trek regulars.  I thought the way Bones acted was a little weird, but I heard later that the actor was just imitating how the original actor played that character, and was doing it quite well, so I guess that's o.k.  I particularly liked Simon Pegg as Scottie.

This movie has a little bit of everything, and I think the most impressive part is that they find a way to make their own completely original version of the Star Trek series without ignoring the canon of the original series. The end of Star Trek  leaves it open for endless new ideas for movies (maybe even a series?)    I am also a fan of how the movie is able to not take itself very seriously.  I found myself laughing out loud a lot more than I expected to at a movie like this, even though some of the comedic scenes seemed thrown in out of nowhere (Scottie in the water-pipes)  The end of Star Trek  leaves it open for endless new ideas for movies (maybe even a series?)

My main complaint about the movie are some of the obvious plot-holes that are in it.  For one, they spend a good part of the first-half of the movie stressing over this drill-platform that is going to destroy some planets.  So Kirk and his buddies go and blow it up, and what happens?  It's back within the next half-hour.  There is also a scene where they insert a bug(literal) into a key-character, and there is no explanation given to why, and if there was, it was not stated explicitly enough.  There are more weird plot-mechanics I could talk about, but I'm afraid they would spoil too much of the movie.

All in all, I really enjoyed the movie, and will definitely pick it up on DVD when it comes out, which is saying quite a bit, as I am not a huge movie-consumer.

Final Grade: A- (an overall good start to my summer)

This is going to be a 15-20 part series, so I would appreciate any feedback.  I'm not exactly an experienced reviewer, so I will take any criticism and try to improve.

Thank you for reading :)

P.S: This is completely unrelated but I made a remix of Mega Man 3's Magnet Man theme.  You can hear it here, open the song in a new window.  It's not completed but I am a little proud of it :)
