This could potentially be an ATB/ARPG hybrid. First of all, the placement of a "Defend" option at the bottom of the menu is a little odd for a full real-time battle system.
Secondly, Cloud and Barret have a bar underneath their names that fills as they attack enemies. This is separate from the Limit meter, as that is shown on the far right. When this gauge fills, it turns red and they perform a special move. This could signify the end of a "turn", or the beginning of a cool down period.
The battle system could very well have more ATB-ish elements to it than initially meets the eye. It will be interesting to see if they can strike a solid balance that fans on either side of the ATB/real-time debate can be happy with.
@roomrunner: Not that it makes it any better, but Rusev and Sheamus were out there, too. It isn't in their character to be out there, either, and they are also high up on the card; I think they just needed a lot of bodies. Of course, all anyone cares about is Owens.
I remember 12 year old me thinking that Barret's writing was pretty realistic, but race didn't come into it at all. It just reminded me of how a lot of people actually talk in a "not everyone speaks super eloquently all the time" sort of way. Much of Cid's dialogue is presented in a similar way yet I've never seen anyone bring that up in comparison to Barret except for @Brodehouse up above me.
@artisanbreads: For what it's worth I believe that is the crystal curse spreading across her skin, not tatoos. Judging by the concept art of the main villain, the victim winds up looking like a stained glass window by the end. The title is likely a play on that!
@westernwizard: It's likely only because games were still being pioneered back in those days, and with much smaller teams to boot. Much like anything else it's been tainted by the business aspect of things at this point.
