In DS1 on the PC you can mod what it says (you can replace 'You died' and the names of the zones as well), which can be pretty funny. Here's hoping that the second one will be mod friendly, too. But as somejerk posted, for now it is 'Victory Achieved'.

I saw a mod that replaced 'You Died' with 'Thanks Obama'. That was good times right there.

Well on the bright side, I guess this frees up Jon Van Caneghem to make the spiritual successor to Might and Magic I've been dreaming about!

I'd like to see Sydney personally. Australia is in the middle of a civil war during Human Revolution, so that could tie in nicely too.

The game has some rough edges for sure. I'm wondering how well they will learn and adapt as they go. That's something Blizzard was extremely good at, and you could see with each of WoW's expansions (and sometimes even with content updates) how they had applied the lessons they had learned to the new content / systems. I'm hoping that Yoshi P and his crew are willing to make those sorts of sweeping changes if they determine that they'll benefit the game.

I have an original Ogre Battle cart for the SNES with the box and manual and everything. It's one of my all time favorite games, and out of all the games across the many consoles I've owned, it's the one I haven't gotten rid of. I hear it's pretty uncommon too, was hard as hell to find way back when I got it.

@herbiebug: Yeah, that would be mine too. I mean, they built that up for a KILLER last level, and I remember just looking at my TV in dismay as the credits started rolling. I don't remember where I read it, but apparently that was exactly what Bungie had intended to do, but they ran out of time and had to cut it there. What a bummer.

Because I'm pretty sure if I got rid of it, the little bomb dude wouldn't be nearly so happy...

I can think of two you might like off the top of my head (other than the Witcher series which has already been mentioned and probably hits the closest to the mark as for what you're asking for)

Baldur's Gate 2 is one of the greatest PC RPGs of all times. Especially with the conclusion it gets with its expansion, Throne of Bhaal, it tells an awesome, sweeping story, has some great characters, and will keep you occupied for a while. It's honestly not a bad idea to jump in at 2 if you haven't played 1, the stuff you miss gets explained pretty quickly and besides a few returning characters and one major plot point, 2 doesn't really build off of 1. Combat in the infinity engine games is actually really good and given that you have a party of up to 6 people to deal with, it can wind up being really tactical, especially in the harder fights. Throne of Bhaal especially loves throwing some really nasty boss fights at you that demand careful planning.

Icewind Dale 2 is another great one. While it doesn't get the praise its Bioware developed cousin does, IWD2 might actually be more fun. Where the BG games are very character/story driven, the IWD games are straight up dungeon crawls. There's no main character, just an entire party you create then pit against just about everything worth XP in the Forgotten Realms. One other big difference between the two is that IWD2 uses a newer edition of the Dungeons and Dragons rules (3rd edition, as opposed to BG2's AD&D rules), which I like quite a bit better.

I just finished playing through the whole BG series and am starting up on IWD2 myself. The games really have aged well and are still tons of fun today.

Edit: How did I not mention Human Revolution! Go play Human Revolution.

It's amazing how much this game copied from Monster Hunter, about all it's missing is a cat buddy to follow you around and a timing based mini-game to cook meat (and I'm not that far in, so who's to say it doesn't). I mean, you can seriously weaken bosses then capture them with shock bombs.

Not that any of this is really a bad thing. Game's great, I've made it to the second set of missions and really had to tear myself away from it. The gun crafting is really fun (I'm saving up to see what happens when you mount a minigun barrel on a shotgun), and the whole active reload system actually works surprisingly well (and it's really forgiving too).

There are a few things I'm not a fan of. First, like Warxsnake pointed out, the inventory system blows. I think they could have done well to keep copying Monster Hunter here and let you cycle through your inventory and select something that you can use with another button. Having to put my gun away to use grenades pretty much ensures I'm not going to be using grenades. I'm not sure if other bosses work this way, but the first boss' habit of wandering away to other parts of the level really didn't seem to add much. It just means any tension from the fight is lost (and at least this boss is incredibly easy), and you simply have to open up your map to see where he went. To be fair, I wasn't a big fan of this in Monster Hunter either. Another complaint is that sometimes the mission objectives can be really obscure. I can think of two (the hostage rescue one and the treasure hunt) where it just was not at all clear where I needed to go. The treasure hunt one especially was annoying because the final gold coin was essentially hidden and I only found it by accident. Other missions do a good job marking what you're supposed to be doing though, so it's inconsistent.

Naturally though, the counterpoint to all this is that you can get a trombone that doubles as a shotgun.

Where I work, we have DTO, meaning our sick days and our vacation days all come from one big pool. Thus, if I'm staying home sick, my activities include:

-Restless fevered sleep

-Sitting doubled over on the toilet wishing I was dead

-Standing doubled over the toilet wishing I was dead

-Moaning

-Trying to summon the strength to ward off my kitty who doesn't understand I'm sick and don't want to play

-Trying to think of what I can eat that will allow me to sustain my feeble strength without making me violently ill

-Fruitlessly adding and removing blankets trying to find a combo that's not too hot and not too cold, and failing.

-Thinking about the work that's piling up in my absence

I've learned not to play anything too repetitive, since that will always inevitably embed itself into my fever dreams, which is downright maddening. I remember a fever dream that was just 8 hours of Picross, but the puzzles were never solved and there was no payoff. Just 8 hours of counting and adding and subtracting, and chipping away boxes.

Oh god, I made that mistake once. My game was Majesty, and to this day I feel vaguely uncomfortable playing it.
