Plot Holes in Games

While I applaud any game that attempts to tell a compelling story, the following offenders betray their own logic for the sake of game play. Of course, spoilers are prevalent.

Understandable? Yes. Acceptable?

  • After the gods of Olympus fail to redeem Kratos for his harrowing misdeeds, the god of war casts himself from the highest mountain into the rocky sea below. The concept of suicide being an escape from madness is ludicrous, since it was previously established that, upon death, mortals are sent into eternal damnation in the underworld.

  • The musician in the windmill decries that a young child with an ocarina played a hymn, and suddenly the weather shifted, permanently affecting the operation of the windmill. In essence, young Link teaches the song to his adult self by performing it to the musician, which is impossible, since he would first have to learn the song from another source before teaching the musician, and thus himself, in the future. The Song of Storms is always taught, but never learned.

  • After trapping Chell in a relaxation vault, GLaDOS attempts to kill her with turrets (which are defective) and neuro-toxic gas (which proves exhausted). Soon after, with Wheatley in her role, the substitute core drives Chell and GLaDOS down the pit with a deadly robot arm, which GLaDOS could have employed to kill Chell.

GLaDOS has used these arms against the player before, and has essential controls over the facility up until the point of replacement (preventing Chell from pressing the Stalemate Override button.

  • Nate and Sully find a map room within a boarded up church in Madagascar. In order to get there, they need to scale a gigantic bell tower and ring the ball atop. Unfortunately for Nate, years of neglect made the bell unstable, and the whole tower collapses while he's on top. Unfortunately for the writing staff, bell towers create a lot of noise when they collapse, so it's unbelievable that no one nearby would notice and go to investigate.
