I agree with the first 2. I'm not much of a fan for Anthony.

Holy shit I just watched bruno and gotta say the resemblance between that character and Anthony Kiedis is uncanny.

I'm yet to hear live evidence that Anthony Kiedis can sing in real life.

Allow me to add three often overlooked female vocalists:

Skin (Skunk Anansie), Bald, black pissed off political lesbian with fucking crazy dress sense. Yes please. You will never hear such a pretty voice turn into a scream so quicky, and my God can she work a crowd. Recommended listening "Charlie Big Potato/Brazen"

Skye Edwards (Morcheeba), First woman I ever heard sing in an English accent, was doing it way before and better than Lily Allen.  Recommended listening "The Sea/Trigger Hippie"

Brody Dalle (The Distillers, Spinnerette), this girl has is all, gorgeous, punk as fuck, and a voice that is powerful and fragile at the same time, she proved to the world she's got the voice capable of doing Old School Punk, New School Punk, Rock and Dance tracks. Recommended listening "Sing Sing Death House" and pretty much any track off of "Coral Fang"

I know there's lots of really talented female vocalists, but these three still are the only ones to give me goosebumps, still don't know why.

1. James Hetfield: He doesn't just snarl his way through metal songs, he can legitimately sing too. Just watch this:

2.) Axl Rose: A lot of people hate his voice, I love it. Despite his prima donna attitude I consider him to be one of my favorite front men of all time.
3.) Glen Danzig: I've always found his voice to be truly unique, and even though most of the Misfit's tracks have HORRENDOUS production values I still love them.

Honorable mention: Bruce Dickinson, Johnny Cash, Layne Staley, Phil Anselmo, Billie Corgan, Aaron Lewis, Scott Weiland, Geddy Lee, Ozzy, Steven Tyler.

I am going to go a bit old school and say that Johnny Cash, Otis Redding and Frank Sinatra are some of the best vocalists of all time. Also, Robert Plant, Roger Daltrey, Paul McCartney and John Lennon too. To round off this list I am going to also include Freddie Mercury, Geddy Lee, Anthony Kiedis and Van Morrison.

1. Doc Talk
2. Microsoft Sam
3. AT&T Labs Text to Speech - Charles (UK English)
4. Farbraush V2

Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, that dude who sang in the Platters, and I guess Johnny Cash when you aren't burned out on him.  I'd be a liar if I didn't mention Danzig.  There was a time when I really dug Brody from the Distillers, too.

Frank Sinatra and Matt Bellamy.  Actually Whitney Houston can join my list too. That girl has got some pipes on her.

...Maybe Josh Homme too but I'm pretty sure I love his voice because it's hella sexy, not necessarily because of his vocal skills. So he doesn't really count.

Dave Grohl and Chris Cornell are my favorites.

Thom Yorke. Christ can that guy sing.

Matthew Bellamy

Can't be bothered with pictures, but my top three are probably Thom Yorke, Dustin Kensrue and Bjork.

Dude, I love me some Johnny Cash as much as the next guy, but a fantastic vocalist he was not.

I don't know who my favourite is, and I can't be bothered to list all the artist I like, but I think Freddie Mercury was possibly the best vocalist, at least in my lifetime. Either him or Falco. Nah just kidding, not Falco.

Stu Block from Into Eternity or Halford. nobody can wail like those two.

I'm taking a different route than the rock-n-roll performers who will be listed ad infinitum and go with jazz, standards and rhythm-n-blues singers.

  1. Sarah Vaughn
  2. Frank Sinatra
  3. Nat King Cole
  4. Elle Fitzgerald
  5. Peggy Lee
  6. Billy Eckstine
  7. Billie Holiday
  8. Diana Krall
  9. Tony Bennett
  10. Ray Charles

Does anybody else think Anthony Kiedis looks like Bruno in that picture?

Joshua Homme and Michael Patton for moi.

@PenguinDust: I'd chuck some Nina Simone in with that.

Yeah Ihsahn has some good vocals but I have only listened to his solo works, not Emperor oddly enough.

since were talking about VOCALISTS. I may have a different favorite singer (Paul is definitely one of my favorites) but I believe, undoubtedly, these three men are the best vocalists ever. Nobody else had hordes and hordes of females screaming their lungs out at just the site of them and then passing out at just the sound of them.

I agree.  I have heard that he is fairly bad live, but I don't know about that.  I suppose I could look up some videos or something, but I'm rather happy with my memories of his excellent vocals.  It's a little like how I won't watch Eyes Wide Shut, because I want to think that Kubrick is always awesome.

@TwoOneFive:

I want to believe you, but here's the honest part:  I watched the first few minutes of the movie.  I didn't like it.  It was pretty bad.  Nicole Kidman's accent was borderline-meh/bad.  It made me turn it off.  You could be right though.  I just LOVE some of Kubrick's stuff previous to that (The Shining is one of my favorite movies of all time)....and I couldn't bring myself to watch more.

The correct answer is Freddie Mercury.
