Hey Ben,

just wanted to say thanks for all you did while you were here. I really appreciated how much effort you put into GotY in particular.

I hope your new opportunity gives you what you are looking for!

It's a work in progress as the app has occasional serious problems and some versions of games aren't the best. I haven't run into too many of them, but certainly have seen enough reports out there to know it's commonplace to have install/uninstall problems.

does seem like the app is improving but there's a lot of work left be done.

but the value proposition can't be beat (especially if like me you locked in at $5/mo for a good while using MS rewards points). It's the ideal way to try out new games and new developers.

I pretty much don't buy indie games anymore. I probably played 20+ games off the service last year.

my main complaint with it is how hard it is to back up saves.

@sparky_buzzsaw: Oh, uh. Welp. If you have any secondhand PS2 games that are rare and expensive I'd happily take them off your hands for *less money* than whatever eBay resellers are going for. Wouldn't happen to have a Suikoden V just... hanging around for less than $150, would you? (do not sell me your copy of Suikoden V.)

But, uh, yeah. Expect me to do something with those Xenosaga games in the near-ish future. I've still gotta make my way through Shadow Hearts, but I'm thinking 2021 is gonna be the Year of Random-Ass JRPGs for me. Still wanna get through at least one Trails game as well.

This will sound crazy but I actually got a copy of Suikoden V after years of seraching for $50 from GameStop 13 months ago. They occasionally have inventory on really hard to find PS2 games.

You might keep an eye on their stock.

great list AW, I've had my eye on troubleshooter for a good while now. Definitely looks like my kind of thing

I keep hoping it's gonna end up in a Humble Choice.

30 hours sounds like an ideal length for Wasteland and honestly that's kinda my wheelhouse anymore length for long games

This generation didn't really have a genre that "defined" it, in the same way that cover-based third person shooters "defined" the 7th gen or... what "defined" the 6th again? I don't know.

I'd argue that Battle Royales were the definitive one (if you're picking one)

but really this era is the era of the Live- Service-ification of games in general, I'm not sure how you'd classify that. But that ethos seemed to creep into everything.

The Wiki is primarily maintained by unpaid volunteers who all have their own lives and dayjobs outside of the site. I'm sure they'll get to you as soon as they can

it's not uncommon for 1st submissions from brand new users to take longer to make sure it's in usable form, it isn't spam or has plagiarism issues etc.

before auto saves existed.

Even when auto saves are reliable I'll never fully trust them. I've felt the pain of lost or overwritten saves to many times to not make tons of extra backups when I can

@slag: Thanks! ... Does a game like OoT get lost to time eventually? (Pun not intended.)...

I feel like the watershed moment this happened was Undertale surprisingly.

or maybe more the "seminal" moment where the torch was finally passed.

but yeah, dunno if you saw that GameFAQs poll about GoAT during the height of Undertale Mania, but Undertale didn't just beat OoT, it drubbed it. Something was practically unthinkable in gaming fandom prior to that. Granted it's gameFAQs and that place loves its drama, but it did feel like a seal was breached. Their forums certainly reacted like it.

Since then we've had Breath of the Wild, which I think gives a weird sort of bridge where older and younger gamers can rally around one game , but the stranglehold OoT had as the consensus GoAT I think is gone for good.

I don't think the game ever gets totally forgotten tho even if the playable memory of it fades, it has too much cultural and historical cache and the IP is still prominent. I imagine future gamers will likely be aware of it for decades to come
