RAGE not just a game but a state-of-mind and an emotion.

So while playing RAGE I find myself torn about my overall feeling(s) about the game. I love id's direction in the development of RAGE's style but I have conflicting interests with the game. On the one hand it is a fun game when you take the time to sit down and get into the game and smoke baddies on foot and/or whilst mounted in your badass upgradeable vehicle(s). On the other hand when not playing the game and pondering sitting down to knock out a little more of the story I kind of have to push myself to get to that point (which is pretty fuck'n unusual) and thus I am torn about my overall experience with the game thus far.

Pro's:

Fun weapons

Beautifully rendered environments/landscapes

Several ammo types/options

Cool and engaging vehicle play

Side quests for some extra cash

Cool/engaging achievements.

Cons:

Repetitive type side quests

-Sometimes- vehicle response seems to lag

Sometimes downright idiotic A.I.

Game lock-up (not so much bad because of the save-anytime feature but more just kind of an annoyance)

Cheers mate.

Rage is a game for the sake of being a game, it gives you no motivation to go on with the main story missions or do side stuff/minigames, the only reason to keep playing is to make worth your 60 bucks, it feels like the story was written by a programmer.

I'm not saying you are not gonna have fun here but you gonna have to find some external motivation just to give it a try.

This is pretty much the reason I elected to not play Rage. Though without your mildly angry tone; for me, I could just tell the game wasn't for me, and that's fine.

As far as single player FPS games, it sounds like it doesn't offer the things I'd find interesting. By most accounts, the story is weak and ends poorly, with no particularly memorable characters. The levels themselves don't sound like the nonstop thrill ride of something like Modern Warfare/Gears of War 3 (I've heard the boss encounter in Dead City is a high point, though), nor are they the gradual journey of a Half-Life 2/Resistance 3, nor does the open world really offer any interesting things to stumble across or any reason to explore. From everything I've heard, you sorta just drive around, and go into buildings to shoot guys. I'm sure that gameplay is awesome and everything, but that's not enough for me.

I don't know why id doesn't just hire more writers, or better ones. They insist on making games with irrelevant multiplayer modes (Doom 3, Rage), which is fine and all, but you have to give me SOME sort of interesting story hook and follow through on it a little. If they want to make a game that is so gameplay-focused and gives the player almost no meaningful context for what they're doing, I don't know why they don't just go back to making multiplayer-only shooters.
